I have an alpha P3125,are the fans supposed to blow onto the heatsink fins or pull air through the fins and blow air out into the "case"?

I believe they are supposed to blow.
It's best to try it each way and see what kind of results you get.
I have two on a VP6 cooling a couple of 1g P3s. One is sucking and one is blowing. A lot of it depends on your mobo layout, and case airflow.

Most of what I have read: either way does the same result, some have come with 1 degree gain with sucking.
Try em both, and share this with us mate.

The mobo i'm using doesn't have temp monitoring.
I was thinking they should blow onto the heatsink because of the vent in the bottom of the sink for cache cooling. its hard to get air in there if its going in the wrong direction :D
blowing might be quieter too, i'll try it out soon.

There's a product out called Compu-Nurse, ~$15 US. It's just a small digital display with a long lead with a flat thermistor on the end. It seems to be fairly accurate, and it sure comes in handy when checking out temps when the mobo can't tell you. It also helps to verify unusual reported temps too.
I will just slide the sensor inbetween the HS and chip to get some readings.

i've done that woith both my tbirds, cuz the mobo temp isn't accurate in windows (it is in linux for some reason)
I don't think i really needed a temp probe for my crunchers :D if they lock up, then they are too hot :D the 450 K6-2 does though, but its built in to the mobo

Hi MechCD,
They come from the factory sucking. You would have gotten varying temps when blowing or sucking depending on where mb sensor is......goldie

Okey dokey! I'll leave em the way they are then, unless it might be quieter having them blow onto the fins, how much could this raise the temps?

Couple of drgrees difference is all. I found my mb temp was lower blowing cause it moved more air past the mb sensor. CPU temp went up 1-2 * blowing. Hope that helps...goldie
