When I log into Linux, I have the choice of using KDE or Gnome. Is gnome better, or just different than KDE?

It's kind of a personal preferance. I like Gnome, but I think KDE is an easier leap from windows. They are both very cool desktop environments, so... I guess what I am trying to say is you should try both and see which one you feel more comfortable with.

Above all, have fun.

Maybe we should start a poll...

Egad... another poll I don't know how to answer because I like them both :)

I personally prefer and choose Gnome, KDE just looks wrong to me.

But, I always recommend KDE to new starts, whenever you think "how do I do that", just think how/where Winodws does things and thats pretty much how it works in KDE.

KDE uses the "qt" libraries, Gnome uses GTK (GIMP Tool Kit) libraries. You can have both libraries, both desktops and switch between the two. I have found that most KDE app's run from Gnome and visa versa. Give them both a try and see what you like the best.

I have always used Gnome, even when i started. KDE also just looks "wrong" to me. It looks almost like a MAC and Windows hybrid (eek!), or maybe some old OS

It looks to me like Mac contracted their desktop to Sesamme Street. :D
