I thought I would post some picy's of a new product of mine, finished just yesterday, to show you peeps what I do for a living. I spend 50% of my time as a UNIX/SCADA developer, 50% as a product developer and 20% as a procrastinator.

This is a new product that multiplexes 2 x RS-232 and 2 x RS-422 inputs, and provides 16 x RS-232 and 16 x RS-422 outputs. Interesting heah? hehehe.
What the hell do you use that for ???? mmmm. "Mixing" serial control from several peices of equipment (remote controllers, keyboards, computer systems etc) and providing many outputs to robotic cameras, PLC's, industrial process's, other computers etc.

Ok, its not interesting.... :D Here is de picys with the lid off, sorry for the poor image quality, I never was good at ****ography:

Trust me phil... you need one! ;)
Can i hook my microwave to that? :p
But seriously... you know what i need dnar? I'll tell you... you know how they have audio cd changers that hold say 200 cds... i need one with a usb interface that will index data cds... so as the unit is a drive and each cd is a folder(within win32 or unix enviro). The software app wouldn't have to be anything special, just functional. I know HD prices are getting lower and the platter density is getting higher... but i wonder if there is a market for this type of "read only" storage. I'd be happy with a 1000 cd unit... :D

mmmmm. I know the changers you talk of, I have seen them used in shopping centres, reseraunts etc. Mostly, they are loaded with Kenny G discs,

The only data solution I know of, is the present architecture using arrays of CD servers. You can build a Linux CD server array pretty cheap these days. :D :D :D

If you need to ask that sort of question, I would say YES. Single unit cost is AUD 1880 inc 10% GST. PayPal will be fine :D :D :D :D

I have used a few products like that.

I have a program that interfaces to 16 devices using 9 RS-232 ports on one pc.

The 16 devices:
3 led display signs (4 lines x 20 chars) on one rs-232 port with a fiber link to a RS-485 converter.
6 RF card readers on 2 RS-232 ports across fiber converted to RS-485.
6 Truck scales on 6 RS-232 ports.

My two work computers both have 10 RS-232 ports and a 24 port digital IO card.

I write software to automate Asphalt plants and Rock Quarries. Unattened or attended loadout of material.

I have used smart ports to multiplex 4 RS-232 ports from 1 port.
