Please explain how Infoworld is the ONLY rag with negative results.....
All the other services including ZDnet, CNET all showed just the opposite....
Could Infoworld's testing methods be flawed?
Their results just don't add up........

Anyone can push the envelope....
If you have Win9X definately start saving for the change. If you have Win2K then just spend the money on a vacation. Win2K is good enough.
Can you install more than once? yes if you take your time and do it over a period of time.
How many of you know about the Microsoft Partners Program? As a MS Partner I can order a copy of XP Pro for $40 bucks plus shipping. This is a boxed copy of XP Pro. I can only get one copy.
I have been buying OEM copies for $135
If you are buying 5 copies and up you should check out Open Licence..... no product activation with OL

If you decide to run a dually, you'll need the "pro" version.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but only the home version has the activation requirement.
Frankly, I can't see a good reason to upgrade.

You do need to activate the Pro version as well, unless you have the OL version. You are correct about needing Pro to run SMP though

Will, have you had any questions with XP home edition and win2k communicating with each other. Tech TV also had negative reviews on XP and said "if you have ME, buy XP. If you have win2k, don't buy XP".

I know you asked this of Will, but I thought I would throw in my 5c worth.
I would agree. If you ahve ME(which is a piece of doodoo if you ask me) then definatly upgrade to XP.
If you have 2K then the added extras in XP dont outweight the cost so stick with 2K.
On the performance side of things I find in most things XP to be quicker than 2K. However as the new UI in XP invloves alot more than it did in 2K the type of graphics card you have can dictate how fast it appears to run.
For example My machine only has a TNT card (not TNT2 or Geforce but the old plain TNT) and it is slower to refresh the display than 2K was. I saw XP on my mates machine ,same specs as mine apart from the fact he has a Geforce 64M and it looked alot snapier.
So I tend to turn of some(if not most/all) of the new eye candy to regain some speed till I get myself a new video card (which is well overdue anyway)
-----
For those familiar with Nix I would compare it to using FVWM95 or something like Gnome or Enlightenment. The later two being more graphically dependant and benifiting from a better video card more than anything else.

Only XP Pro has SMP support.
Any copy that comes in a box from a retail store...local or over the Internet...will require activation. If you buy an OEM version (shrink wrapped with just CD and book plus sticker) you will have to activate.
Buy through Open Licence and you will not have to activate due to the OLPK (Open License Product Key)

Does that come with it's own serial number? Or is it the one with a cracked registration requirement?:p :ssh:

well wbier, I read another review about xp, that pretty much dumped all over it. i cant remember where it was, but they did speed tests, and it pretty well....sucked anywhere from 11 to 33% slower than windows 2000 in the office setting. Besides...it looks slow, to much overhead from all the fancy pretty stuff. i like to keep it simple personaly.

lol mech, in the countries that dont have anti piracy laws, they sell the hacked version from 2 - 3 bucks on the street. Its just a rule, anything legal has to be little over 10 bucks...especialy OS's. =)

That may well be true. I guess it all depends what hardware you use. I sure would not want to use it any Intel CPU. On my 2 boxes that run XP it seems to me as fast or faster than Win2K. But I havn't sat there with a stopwatch timing each box to see which is faster.
Both XP and Win2K are crunching just fine for me so is does not matter what others find for test results.....
As they say... "your milage may vary."

Well my milage with XP has been great, I've been running it for about 2 weeks now. I only run one machine with it (1.0 @ 1.33 AMD) and I think it is a very slick OS. I have had some minor glitches, but I do love the restore feature :) All in all I think that M$ has finally come out with a good product, not saying the 2000 sucks the big wazoo or anything, I just think that XP is a pretty slick OS.
FWIW you can turn off all the eye candy.
