I am thinking of buying a video capture card
but what are the things were i must look at
and what are the best cards versus price

i want to use the card for recording home video's from my anologe camera so i can put them on cd's
cd's are still cheaper than empty videos :)

I have a MATROX MARVEL G450 AGP OEM VERSION 32MB DDR sometimes it's called the E-TV. It's a pretty sweet card. Runs about $190 US. I have a digital cable box hooked up to it in my office so I can watch TV on my second monitor. It does some pretty good recording. I have never used any other capture cards so I really doesn't know how it compares.

It has Coax, S-video and Analog video connections.

A friend of mine does a lot of video editing and he swears by Pinacle cards, he alledges they are the best and well for the price they should be many hover around $1000 mark and are well over 1000 up in Canada:(

I've been considering a digital VCR. So what does anybody think.

I could buy a TiVo and subscribe to their TV Guide service which updates itself intelligently, BTW) or I could just add a TV card and a large drive and some software to an existing PC.

I probably wouldn't take good advantage of the service, so the hardware only approach seems more reasonable.

yep this is a lot of money
and i don't have it :)
so if anybody would dump his cash in the Save Wurm fund i would be please :D
but i don't think this would happen:(
so i would have to do with a les expensive card

and to pelligrinni
yes i have considered that card but i have seen it is nothing for me because i have to trade in my geforce and dont't like that :)
(i play al lot of games too )

I hear that ATi TV Wonder is good, bit internal and extrenal, but the internal heats up the case fdast :D

haupage looks good too (check spelling ont hat)

Try to get one that has a 60fps capabiltiy and a decent resolution.

the heap ones do 30fps or less at 640x480 or less, that means baaaaad quality BEFORE compression :D

It seems to me that standard TV signals in the USA are 512x(something) and refresh at essentially 30fps -- actually, I think it is half of the lines (alternate) at 60. I'm not sure the process to make that into whatever the computer understands, but I don't see much reason to increase the bandwidth over what you actually receive.

Der, theres a reason that i can't remeber... doof! has to do with throughput, not actual capture rate.....

yes it is :)
but then i need to have more money (student arent' rich )
an also the case is that i don't have an rich dad so that won't be a option too :(
so i need to deal with one system
and because i play games it needs to be updated frequently so i don't get rich either
:D

I'm using a cheap($70cdn) AMAX tv card, it will capture at 640x480@30fps in preview mode an looks very respectable. If i encode using the DivX4 codec with high quality settings it's almost perfect, very nice. There is a problem though with regards to the file systems used... something about the 2GB limit with fat file systems(including fat32). It's recommended to use NTFS for the file system. I seem to have a limit of 22mins of capture before it stops capturing... though this is ok if i intend to edit heavily. The card is based on the Brooktree 848 chipset... ok for the average user, not for the hardcore... hth
