I kinda like WIn 2K, lots of stability, the home server was not rebooted for 6 months before I moved...

I too was juggling with the idea of a linux box... waiting for the T-Bird to do it...
1. What distro should I use?
2. What GUI should I use?
3. I will kill you with questions I swear...

Yeah, Redhat 7.1 is well cool. I have a copy here somewhere in amongst all of the other distro's. In fact, the new web/forum server is running 7.1.

Oh, all right....
[nasty newsgroup response mode off]
1. RedHat 7.1 is good. Mandrake 8.0 is good, but stay away from point zero releases IMHO.
2. I like Gnome. Others like KDE, it's more like W*&^@!ws... I find KDE looks cartoonish....
If you like minimilist / real fast, then try fvwm, fvwm95, icewm, windowmaker, wm2 + more.

Really digging up the old old old old threads..
Actually, yes.. Tell us because I want to hear some opinions. I hear a lot about Red Hat and Mandrake. Gotta do some more research to see what I may be better off using..

I had to do my best to find a thread about linux in the linux forum :D
I use redhat for several years now. I used it since version 5.0. Before that I argued a bit with slackware and .....(hmm I forgot which one was the other), but never really got that working. Driver problems, lack off support, innoying error. But that was years ago... don't even know how much years. It was in the time I worked on my 486. :D
From RedHat 5.0 on hardware support got beter and installation got easier. Well with RedHat 7.2 even my mum could do it (with a little help :) ). At the uni we used RedHat as well on the student systems. So I only have experience with RedHat. I like it and it works for me.
Most other linux users I know use redhat, debian, mandrake, or suse.
And offcourse I know some that have been attrackted by BSD.

Hmmm.. Well.. It's not gonna hurt anything except the amount of time it takes me to get G@H running on this new computer when I install it. So I should have plenty of time to play around with it..

Im actually rather shocked. I have fought tooth and nail to stay out of linux, but windows really let me down. The manual was helpful, but not helpful enough for a newbie. This site was wonderful however, and went thru step by step of everything I need to do.

Thank you Ercewee for all your help.
Siggy now has a computer that is running Linux. Red Hat 7.1 and its crunching genes.

I really am amazed....its actually still running. :D no reboots or anything.
So has anyone ever done a comparison of Linux vs. windows on like machines? which is faster?

I too have played with the thought of going to Linux... Free is always attractive to me. I tried Mandrake, but didn't really like it... I didn't feel like I had the control of the machine that I did with $$$$ows. I guess I had the same feeling with the first Mac OS I used (8.6). But if I go back to Linux... would it be better to go to Redhat? I need a challenge, but something I can handle. I do feel quite versed with the "very" expensive Gates OS's. However, Mandrake looked so cheesy. Your thoughts please... appreciate it as always.

Try RedHat 7.2 (not 7.1). You will receive instant gratification. :D

Phil did such a comparison... but i can't seem to find the thread... anyway... win2k is faster than win98 and linux is even faster than win2k... for crunching genes... that was why you asked, wasn't it siggy? :D

I think i spoke too soon:
Here we go....full results comparing the same exact WU on identical hardware. The only things changed were the OS and the CPU. The machine was 100% dedicated to the Genome client during the tests. Test machine:
Tbird and Athlon 4 at 133x10.5 (1400Mhz)
Abit KG7-R
512Mb Crucial PC2100
Win2K Pro and Red Hat Linux (2.4.9 kernel)
Results in order of speed
Athlon 4 @ 1400MHz, Win2K Pro
Total Time: 19688 seconds or 5.469 total hours for a 67aa Protein. Which gives us an average of 10.94mins per sequence.
Athlon 4 @ 1400MHz, Red Hat 7.1 (2.4.9)
Total Time: 20416 seconds or 5.671 total hours for a 67aa Protein. Which gives us an average of 11.34mins per sequence.
T-Bird @ 1400MHz, Win2K Pro
Total Time: 20466 seconds or 5.685 total hours for a 67aa Protein. Which gives us an average of 11.37mins per sequence.
T-Bird @ 1400MHz, Red Hat 7.1 (2.4.9)
Total Time: 21029 seconds or 5.841 total hours for a 67aa Protein. Which gives us an average of 11.68mins per sequence.
Conclusions
Win2K is approximatley 3.7% faster than Linux when using the Athlon 4.
Win2K is approximatley 2.75% faster than Linux when using the T-Bird.
The Athlon 4 is approximately 3.95% faster than the T-Bird when running Win2K.
The Athlon 4 is approximately 2.75% faster than the T-Bird when running Linux.
It would appear that Win2K makes better use of the Athlon 4's new features.
The Athlon 4 is faster clock for clock than the T-Bird for the Genome client.
By choosing to run an Athlon 4 and Win2K, I can finish a 67AA WU 22 mins and 21 seconds faster than when running a T-Bird and Linux...this is a 6.81% gain in performance.
Is that better
EDIT: I have 3 1.2Ghz Athlon 4's here and they seem to top out at around 1450 MHz.....I have 2x1Ghz T-Birds that can run at over 1500Mhz. The newer T-Birds are overclocking to nearly 1600MHz and this should offset the performance gain of the Athlon 4. Therefore the T-Bird is the best bang for buck.
This is about 4 months old, but i have found posts by J & W that say linux is faster....

It will probably depend some on the kernel configuration. if your good and can tweak it up pretty good, linux may well be the better.... :)

The Linux client is slower because it is compiled using a crappy compiler....no amount of kernel tweaking is going to make up the difference. We'll just have to wait until the next client release.

ahh, is the g++ compiler crappy? i mean...i figured they would use what comes with all linux systems...
