I just installed the Linuxconf RPM and can't get the X version started! I can get the text based console one by running "linuxconf" at the shell, but can't get the nice and pretty X one to load. Is there a different command or RPM for the X version?

1. You must be superuser (su <passwd>).
2. /sbin/linuxconf
Even though you will have linuxconf in your user account menus, you cant run it. Only superuser/root can do this, and you NEVER use X-Windows GUI's as root, do you!
Thats all you need.:D

I am logged in as root. I can get it running, i just hate the console one!
Why don't ya run X GUIs when root? I have always played games etc while logged in as root :P Darn i guess i'll have to logout and log in as my other non superuser user

Yerk, don't use the console one, puh!
In fact, don;t use either of em! Man, get to know your /etc directory! Learn to use vi! Then, and only then little Grasshopper will you know the true secrets that await you in the depths of the engine room.......;)
Are you trying to run the GUI linuxconf from X????
Well as a REGULAR user in X this is whats done:
- open a terminal
- su <passwd>
- /sbin/linuxconf
Running X as root........
Golden *nix rule: Only use root or su account for system admin. It's fine to go to superuser privelliges as outlined above, but don't start X as root!
The best practice when re-configuring *nix is this:
- go to a console screen Ctl-Alt-F1
- go to runlevel 1 (single user) /sbin/init 1 ot telinit 1
- make your configuration changes with vi
- go back to your required runlevel, telinit 5 for X or telinit 3 for multiuser console (typical servers).
I'm going to start handing out Linux Diplomas at this rate, this WILL become a team of Linux Gurus!

All I was gonna do was mount my Win98 partitions, but I already did that with the mount command. And change some network settings, but thats what Gnome network config and /etc is for
Next up on the ask dnar list : How to get lm_sensors working! (I might figure it out myself)

That depends, in 2.2.x kernels you get the lm_sensors module and install it as per the INSTALL directions (tricky).
2.4.x kernels have it included with the kernel (about time too).
It will be loaded as a module into the kernel at runtime. You really have to read the doco's for this one m8. I would fill this server going through it all here. If you get stuck, shout out. I will try and find the URL I used to have for this............ If only you could see the Linux URL's I have bookmarked...... :)
