Ok, let's test the bandwidth. Try to keep it as short as possible, because it's gonna be a long thread.

My name is Shawn. I'm a Global Network Engineer working for Navy Federal Credit Union. As the name suggests, I get to travel to just about everywhere there is a naval station. I configure and install everything for our remote offices, from routers, servers to the workstations themselves.

My wife Bridget graduated from The George Washington University with a Masters in Biology, minor in chemistry. Her main focus was human genetics. Bridget worked at the National Cancer institute in Frederick Maryland for 2 years where she was involved in Cancer research. Her main area of expertise was proteins interactions with cell signaling which lead her to her current position. She now works at the U.S. Patent office specializing in genetics related patents.

The name is Pierre-Luc. I'm a 4th year medical student at the University of Montreal. As the name suggest ... doh ... will be graduating to full blown doctor in May 2003.

My women, Genevieve (not married, but we're living together...) is also a 4th year medical student; she is also a Pharmacist but decided to do the switch at the end of the program and entered Med school.

My name is Loretta. No it isn't! (Big Monty Python fan) :D

My name is Wayne, I am 37, living in Perth Western Australia. I am a self employed Electronics Engineer, specialising in microcontroller product development and industrial control systems. My business, DNA Research (no we don't do paternity testing!) has been operating for 8 years, so far so good!

I currently lurk most of the working week in a dingey, noisy computer "closet" (too many fans!) writting Unix software for the local Water Authorities wide area control system, using ABB MicroSCADA.

My wife Helen is 38 and works nights as a theatre techy, at the local Hospital. We have 1 boy Alex whose 6 (going on 16) and twin 10 year old girls Amy and Chloe.

I'm not sure what a you mean by Physicai Assistant, could I get a better definition of their function?
Currently they are implementing Prationneer Nurses, Nurses that will be doing "reserved" acts, the stuff that only doctors can do usually....

As of on the Paramedic side, it's quite different from the US and England (I remember you and tril talking about this...) when someone is in for Paramedics he goes to a 3 year professional formation after high school (but it is not a University degree) after which they are received as paramedics.... and start working as one for thereafter...

I konw that some Ambulance have a Doctor on board, but not always, this is limited to the greater towns services
Also paramedics here some new stuff since 2 or 3 years (maybe 5...dunno for sure), ,like intubation (with Combitube) and defibrillation (Automatic Defibrillation Unit... made by Hewlett packard)...

I'll look more into this with the Medics here a t the Hospital so I can provide a more satisfactory answer...

Cheer, and good luck whereever you go... !!!

Hi everyone! I'm a student at the Unseen University, been studying for 37 years (can't seem to find the class rooms!) and I'm allergic to the color "octarine" which is rather unfortunate given the subject matter taught at UU. Being that wizardry gives me hives, have wandered from economics, biology, and happened to be studying mathematics when someone gave me a degree and a swift kick; I fell bass-ackwards into being an electrical engineer for a semi-conductor firm, worked for 5 different companies without leaving my cubicle, and when I came-to found that I was now a yield management engineer. Have decided to pursue artificial intelligence soon at CSU (Colorado State University) since I seem to be woefully lacking the real stuff. Also, because I'm getting tired of computers doing exactly what I tell them to do, not what I want them to do and beating them silly just doesn't seem to work. Some people call me Fred, don't know why as it's not my name, but those who know me, mostly call me Dan and a few other choice names that are not allowed on this B.B. My wife has a nice house in Ft. Collins, Colorado and she even lets me live there as well.

Good one Prokaryote!

Colorado seems a hotbed of responses to this thread So . . .

The name is Gil from Denver Colorado. 46. Married almost 25 years. I fool people (managers) into thinking I'm a hotshot Unix administrator and Oracle DBA with strong networking skills. In reality I just sort of muddle by and they seem happy with it. Two kids who think they are adults (and in truth are getting pretty close). When I'm not geeking out with computers, I'm in the garden with my daylilies, irises, and roses, or hiking in the mountains, or, most likely, being a dad/husband (amazing how much time that last part seems to take)

Real Name: Michael
Age: 35
Locale: Omaha, Nebraska (soon to be Atlanta, Ga.)
Marital Status: Engaged
Children: 4 (Zach, Leah, Tyler and Jamie)
Employed: Yes

In my spare time, when not sitting in front of the computer, I am an outodoors person.....swimming, biking, hiking. Also enjoy amatuer astronomy, reading and watching some TV.

On the computer, I maintain several websites:

http://www.skzdalimit.com
http://www.skzdalimit.com/seti
http://www.skzdalimit.com/folding
http://www.journeyforhope.org
http://www.matshousefoundation.org

and also the Genome Collective website once we get things squared away.

I suffer from Bipolar Disorder (manic depression) and am a rapid cycler (for those who know the lingo). No I do not take any medication for it, I refuse to and I do not like the effect they have on me.

The only 2 bad habits I have are my constant drinking of coffee and smoking, and maybe my rambling in my BB postings. :p

I also have an extremely warped sense of humor, and as a kid, I was called to the principals office often to explain a comment I made in class. I still graduated in the Top 1% of my class of 1200 in high school.

X_Calibur - A PA works under the same capacity as a Doctor but without the responsibility.:) A Doctor awlays has to be on staff when a PA is working. PA school is a lot harder to get into than Med school, as it's quicker to complete than med school. Also, it seems in the states people just don't want the responsibility the doctor has and choose to go the PA route.

I read that your Paramedics are getting Automatic Defibrillators. That cought me by surprise. Do they not use the normal defib and read the heart rhythm on their own. The main defib used here is the Lifepak? Our schools here are a bit different. In some programs you graduate with an Associate Degree, then you go out and work as a Paramedic. Some programs offer a Bachelor Degree. Once you complete the process you usually have to work as an Emergency technician for a good amount of time before you are released as a Paramedic. It took me 2 1/2 years before my hospital released me as a Paramedic. Which ironically happened this month. I find it intruiging learning how other countries EMS system works. Thanks for the info.

I'm a non medication chap myself. I'm an alternative person myself. Ever heard of Shaklee? www.shaklee.com Top cycling team in the nation, largest nutritional company in the world. For the medical students out there. Shaklee is the only nutritional supplement company in the world to consistantly have their research published, on their nutritional supplements in peer review or refereed journals. I'm sure you'll get to know these journals well as they are considered to be the final word in the field of medicine. If it gets published, it's accepted as the golden rule! Yes, I'm pimping again!

Let's see my real name is Jason, 26 yrs old, Scandorean, 6' tall and skinny as a rail (high metabolism and a hollow leg are partly to blame:D). I recently got out off of active duty in the Army and have started working for a family business which designs and builds retail and concession carts for major sports arenas and misc. millwork for colleges, convention centers and supermarkets. I'm married to a beautiful Brit (why I am probably one of the only Americans that understands the Terry Pratchett inferences) who I met while stationed in Korea and have a hellion 16 month old daughter and another in the oven. Timer is set for mid January so hopefully it won't come out underdone.

Hobbies are obviously computers and history. Maybe not as far back as Tril0byte there since I kind of like to focus on humans and what makes us tick. My biggest hobby, or duty, at the moment is trying to keep my daughter from putting everything into her mouth to include my 2 dogs!!

Erik here,

I am 30, and live in Toledo OH.

I have a very cool wife and a son who is a nut (read silly).

I am a part time student. After taking a 8 year break to persue a career in the world of Rock and Roll I decided to go back to school and get a real job. :) But seriously, I am a self proclaimed computer nut, that has been around computers since the mid 80's. Except for my Guitar playing heavy-metal mush brain days in which I managed to miss Windows version 1 through 3.1. Did I miss much? :D

As for the job, my offical title is "Applications Support Specialist" which basically means I babysit the NT boxes (users) at work, but it's all good 'cause occasionally I get to work on cool stuff like setting up mail servers, upgrading pc's, etc.

Am I sharing too much? Oh well.

Names David but most everyone just calls me dave, unless you talk to me on the phone..and then it seems to be Steve ??? I don't know why..but people who call me ask for steve...I reply "Sorry, my name is Dave", they say "Oh..Ok..sorry.....Well steve I need...." arrggg... I just accept it now..

Married for 15 yrs now to an older women ( you can shuddder now)...I'm 43 she's 58. No kids biologically ( that I know of anyway..hey I was a player once), 4 step-kids, 16 grandkids.

Started out as a farm-boy on a small farm in Iowa. Spent some time tring my best to be thrown out of Iowa State Univ., finally got my grade point low enough that I went to work at WOI-TV as a production assistant.
Moved on to working nights as a computer operator, then tried my hand at running a computer store in the early 80's.
When it became a huge money making success for the owners ( it was actually Iowa largest computer store for some time), I fleed and worked full time for the Iowa Air National Guard as a Automatic Flight Control Specialist.
When the Guard switched from A7-D's to F-16's and it looked like I might get down sized I took a stab at being "The Multimedia Manager" for the base. Fancy words for photographer, graphics guy, vidiot. 10yrs later I'm a TSGT ( e-6) still looking for a MSgt slot and getting ready to cap off 20yrs total time in November ( When I will get down sized this time).
Two yrs ago I went back to being just a weekend warrior and started working for myself as a computer repair tech. Biggest client? ESSC ( they serviced Genicom printers and a bunch of other stuff)....they lasted 5 months and went bust. No problem, hello "Rhythms", installed DSL lines in Denver, Chicago, Milwaukee, Des Moines, Omaha, Pittsburg. They cut way back 6 months ago...gee if this keeps up I'll have to get a job... :D

The house sits on 26 acres, have three horses, 24 dogs ( 16 Borzoi - Russian Wolfhounds) that we show, 12 barn cats, and a fox that likes to try and steal cat food off the patio at night. The pond is stocked with bass.

My name is Darrell Live in Southfield, Michigan. Most of my work is done at home, thanks to DSL and cable when I’m at work I skate up and down the hallways, that’s when they send me home. I work for a company that builds Industrial lines using Heat Treat and Bonding Equipment. I set up the computer system that runs those machines. Most of the computers I build my self. I could have as many as 10 computers sitting around my house doing nothing or they could be crunching genes hmmmm……So I carry them back to work and let them handle that electric bill. I’m married with two girls nine and seventeen. My beautiful wife is an Electrician so I really don’t have to work she makes plenty reading books all day.

Likes: Inline Skating, Sci-fi books, Drum&Bass Music, and NASCAR (Johnny Benson fan). Was in Livingston Montana recently and got my first fly-fishing lesson, I really like that.

All of my computer experience is self taught. They did not have computers in school when I was there. My first computer was a VIC-20 and the first thing I did was take it apart. I have had many types of jobs (including construction) trying to find my niche. I really have a passion for computers, I just wish I had the time to learn more. I have been married (2nd time) for 10 years to a wonderful man. I have 3 step children (already out on their own) and 3 daughters still at home. I’m currently working on an 8, a 10 and a 20 thousand square foot, 1 bedroom residence. Half of the time I work at the office, the other half at home. I really do enjoy my work.

Prior to working I got my Architecture degree from The University of Texas at Arlington. I finished my last nine hours in Italy. When I graduated I said I would never, ever draw on one of those darn computers. Little did I know….

I finally married this darn redhead about three years ago. We had been “shacked up” for the previous six. It took some thumbscrews, but I eventually made the decision to marry Dynette-42. Two of her (really “ours” now) children still live with us; Ben-18 and Mariah-15. The other boy, Gabriel(Gabe)-17, lives with his dad now. We were seriously considering having one of our own, but when the oldest hit high school, we quickly changed our minds.

Along with my passion for these little magic boxes (computers) I keep a bunch of aquariums. They are mostly freshwater and a couple of salt tanks. Even though It’s been a while I love getting up in the mountains by myself for some packing, and a lot of fishing. I got to spend a month and a half in the Yellowstone, Beartooth area one summer. Cruising around all those hairpin turns in my ’69 Camero was a blast. I also have a ’69 GTO that needs to be put back together too. Once that’s done I’ll have a little more room for a woodshop in the garage, another hobby I enjoy. I have also been seriously involved with the FWDA (http://www.fwda.org), a local dart association for quite a few years.

OK, must have been away when this was going....

I'm 38, married to Par, who is Thai. I have a stepson Nook who is 9 and a son Nick who is 3. Par will produce another (hopefully a girl) in March.

I work as a Technical Architect for accenture at their Sainsbury's (UK Supermarket) operation having been out-sourced from Sainsbury's last November.

I have worked as a computer consultant since 1986 mostly on implementing business software. In 1994 I emigrated to Hong Kong to catch the last days of Empire (great party!) and then went to Thailand to work for Andersen Consulting at a Caltex oil refinery. There I met Par and when the contract ended had an 18-month sabbatical to get married and have Nick. During this time I also reduced my golf handicap to 6.

Real name Steve Gold, 50yrs old, aka "goldie". I live up in NW Montana in a little resort town named Whitefish near Glacier Park where I have a drywall construction business for 22yrs.
I mostly work on large custom homes.
I am married w/ a 12 yr old daughter. Wife of the last 10yrs is Melissa. Both are the light of my life.
Bought my first computer from Quantex in 1995. I talked w/ tech support so many times I got so I knew what they were going to ask me to do before they actually did. Next bought a Micron and found the ACHO newsgroup where they convinced me I could build my own overclocked box. I knew I wanted to Genome when Tril, pell and the rest of the boys started the group back at ACHO.
I'm an avid golfer (handicap 3), crazed skier (Big Mt ski area is 5 miles from my front door), and upland game (pheasants) bird hunter. Computers are my lastest thirst for learning.

Can't believe i missed this thread... *doh*
My name is Tim, i'm 34, born on the coldest day of february 1967 in Charlottetown PEI, i have called Halifax NS home for the past 26 years. Of UK decent with my mother's side making the crossing to the new world on the good ship Hector, my father's side... well, something about deportation for stealing sheep... we don't talk about it much. ;) I'm been working for a regional courier company for 9+ years now. Currently overseeing the evening outbound shift making sure a few thousand boxes/crates/packages/envelopes get to where they're supposed to go. I work towards 2 deadlines nightly, so if i seem a little stressed you'll know why! I'm also the computer tech for my friends and family(the pay sucks!). My intrests include canoeing, sailing, hiking, fishing, photography, astronomy, cooking, model making, woodworking, boatbuilding, graphic art, gaming, beer, cycling, structural engineering, music, live theatre, motorcycles and of course, messing with computers! My first puter was a commodore128, i've done limited programming in cobol, fortran and *cough* basic. I'm currently single with no women or children pestering me(i have sister's/cousin's friends and my nephew if i feel the need)... it'd be quiet in here if it wasn't for the constant hum of the computers! Plans for the future: to do something with my life! w00t!

OK, here goes:

I am 17, live near Oxford in the UK. I am currently studying A Levels with the goal of studying Computer Science and Physics at university next year.

I do what most students do... spend what little money I have on computers :)

Tril - I am currently looking for universities and Keele is on my list (I am going for a open day on Saturday), is it any good?

Laura and I are neurologists. She's 40 and I'm 36. She specializes in behavioral neurology and has her fingers in a number of academic pots in the NYU Department of Neurology. I am a stroke-intensivist and neuroepidemiologist. If I'm standing at your bedside, something very bad has happened. If you can talk to me, you are getting much better. My research is in the epidemiology of stroke-related epilepsy. Got that?

Nora is a sophomore at the Bronx High School of Science, which is an hour away via the 1-train to the Bx-10 bus. She spends her days "shopping" in the East Village and trying to convince us that her curfew of midnight is hopelessly strict and that no, she really doesn't have any homework.

What can I say Rizz, it's the best University in the world, producing the brightest, best looking grads ever ;)

Yep, my old Uni :D

Seriously, it's a good one, a good international reputation, will be offering MD's next year I think too. Biggest campus in Europe, really nice environment, very rural, lakes, parks etc. Good SU, lots of bands. The Uni is a bit insular, everything is on campus and there is little need to venture out if you don't want to. Locally, Newcastle is a nice town, Keele village is picturesque-ish, the potteries are a bit grimy and glum (possibly another reason many students stay on campus and around the village). The city has kickin nightlife, tons of clubs, loads of girls. There is a high overseas student population, loads of rich kids from all over the world (some of em drive better cars than the one I got now).

Could do a lot worse mate :)

First off -- thanks Dnar for reviving this thread!

I am 32 yrs old, been married to my first wife for 10 years now (she hates it when I introduce her like that!) We have two children: Alyssa Riley 3 yrs and Garret Kile 1 yrs.

Have a doctor of pharmacy degree and have worked in the pharmacy arena for about 9 years now: taught pharmacokinetics at the Univ of Kentucky for 3 years, then moved back to Wyoming.
Now work with the Univ of Wyoming students at Wyoming Medical Center, and teach a logic course at a local college.

Hobbies: Bow hunting, backpacking, canoeing, blackpowder, gun collecting, rock climbing (I'm very new at this one), and everything electronic -- drives my wife nuts! :D

Is bow hunting where you try to hunt a bow (as in deer hunting or fox hunting)? Do the bows hide amongst branches? :D

You would say it is the best.

I have just come back from the Uni of Kent at Canterbury, it is very nice. I still have to visit Keele (going on Saturday, 4 hour drive though, luckily my driver is very good... well, he is my dad :) ), got to go to Royal Holloway and Southampton as well sometime.

LOL! Good point. I am just used to having to clarify either rifle or bow around here. Seems everyone here wants to know with what do you hunt (what caliber, what manufacturer, what gain wiegth of arrow, compound bow, recurve, etc)

He is a tweet.
I was an AD3 and they offered me Meritorious 2nd if I re-enlisted. I decided I would rather design then repair. Bathing in JP did not seem too appealing to me. it is not a good thing when you become good at trouble shooting the fuel system of a tomcat. I could not see myself being a jp soaked fuel migration specialist on the uss zippo or uss razorblade.

Well my buds call me Bob or BK, and some clown started calling me BeeK, and that transitioned to BeeKs. I am over 40, I am a single parent with a beautiful 14-year-old daughter and I have only worked for 2 employers my entire life. Both had their affect and place in my life. My current job is in the Global Account Engineering department, and I am a Program Manager and logics engineer assigned to a top Semiconductor company. I can’t say much about my job, but is it is a blast, and I get to meet lotz and lotz of different people and cultures. There are only a handful of us around because we are each tied to one our top accounts, and work directly with sales and marketing to develop integrated global logistics solutions for the account we are assigned to. It is a great concept, the customers like the fact that an engineer is on the sales team because we are not there to sale the program but are there to ensure we can develop a solution that will work within our system form and operational parameters. I get to do everything from software engineering to site layouts. It pays to be a Jack-of-all-trades and master on none in my job, and I fit that bill perfectly. When you tie that with the ability to B.S. you have the ideal recipe for a Sales Engineer.

My hobbies are hiking, camping, non-technical mountain climbing, the beach, Pro-Women’s Volleyball, a good cigar, smooth Bourbon,:D flaming Pirate WannaBes and Mac Users.

Wow, this took me back, used to like the rocks myself. We have some nice crags in the UK, some in the peak district, lot's round the coast and in wales too. Nothing very high, but some seriously difficult "short routes". Most I was ever up to was HVS (bit unfit ;)) but some of the rock-jocks I used to hang with were awsome, soloing E6 routes (no protection) - real lunatics. One guy used to scoot up the side of your house, using only the pointing for finger/hand-holds - amazing to watch. Course they were all skinny, I was never built (mentally or physically) for that kind of stuff.

Okies, my turn

Go by the name of Sabastian. Im 28 and live in Paris.
I enjoy long walks along and beach and romantic din.....ow s*&t beans, wrong forum.

Ok, I see where we are all going with this...
Name really is Brad, i'm 24 and live in Brisbane Australia.
For a crust I entertain the public's interest as a Town and Environmental Planning Consultant, yet I over look the Bay and somehow spend half my day maintaining 4 G@H clients.

Unfortunatly I still am 'based' at home cause its cheap, nice and the foods good, however my girlfriend of 4 years lives by herself in a nice little unit so I can chill out there. She is a Post Graduate Environmental Science student and someday aims to be my sugar-mummy. :D

Me, out.

HI EVERYBODY! My name is Dave!
I em a Guy
I em 20 My Birth day is in april! ill be 21 :)
(if you couldnt count that yourself ;) )

I am currently attending a 2 year school MCC (Monroe Community College) after my 2 years, (one more semester left, and i may end up staing for one more) i will be deciding if i wish to attend RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) or Clarkson (Clarkson). I dont know... which should i goto? both are great schools. RIT is close.... Clarkson gets me away from the demon parent (my mom). hmm My friend is in clarkson as well. My cousin goes to RIT now, and, my other friend will be going to RIT at the same time as i. I dunno..
I am studying for a programming carreer of some sort, I dont know where i will try to get into, depends on hwo thigns go, i have yet to get into any real programming yet just intro coarses which make me sleepy. Maybe ill get into some home based stuff? i dunno. i like the idea of programming for games, maybe blizzard entertainment, but thats alot of pressure, Blizzard it the elite of game developers. I also like artificial life sims. Things like Creatures were pretty big with me when i was younger. i still like to dabble around technosphere. My goal is to someday make a Technosphere like game/sim that will be more user interactive. need ideas though :)

So i live in NY Just east or Rochester, in Ontario (NY). Cows live down the road, and all my friends are away to college so i had to make som enew ones, altho...i only got a few, who mostly finished their time at MCC already as well. so im stuck with one.. :( No girl friends yet...i tried...really but :p i guess im just to slow.

I have a sister. younger than me, 18 i think, my parents are older.

OK, my turn...
My name is Bill and I am an alcoholic... I mean, no, not really, just an occasional imbiber.
Anyway, I am married (sorry girls). For the last three (of my 34)years, and am infecting my wife with the crunching bug. I am a foreman for a general contractor, and have been for the last 6 years. I enjoy my work, when I get to custom make and install intricate woodwork. The rest of the time I crack the whip on the back of 5-15 of various mechanics and laborers. (good to be THE MAN)
I live right outside of Philadelphia, and have all my life, except for a brief (6 year) spurt of insanity that had me living out in "Witness" country. Remember that Harrison Ford movie? When out there in the late 80s and early 90s I actually did computer networks and phone systems. Did some cool work but my heart wasn't in it. Back when a 486/50 cost $2500.
I have been overclocking since 97, and haven't had a computer in the house that wasn't overclocked. ACHO past present and...
Good Luck!
