Virus
13th July 2001, 07:43
I got my nickname after becoming entrenched in the book, "The Hot Zone". The book is a true account of the Ebloa Virus's entrance into America. Unfortunately it happened very close to my home in Virginia. My wife used to work about 50 yards away from the Level 5 biohazard facility where the virus was contained and studied. I believe there are only 4-5 Level 5 biohazard facilities in the entire world, 3 of which are on U.S. soil. One of which is in Frederick Maryland on the Fort Detrick military base.

In my young lad years I played electric guitar in a Metal band, I had the long hair and the bad attitute (!!!), I still have my shiny Gibson Flying V.... somewhere.
My amp was manufactured by Crate and it was of the Excalibur series... liked the name and the history of the Mighty Sword so it started from there, called my computer Excalibur, then in IRC, etc.
When I joined the newsgroup business (ACHO and Seti to name only two) it was also under Excalibur, but later on I changed it for X-Calibur, which I found looked better... it's now me since then.

I worked for several years as an "air tech" with the Iowa Air National Guard. For those that don't know what "air tech" means, it means that I was a Federal civilian employee with the Dept of Defense. Like someone that works for the post office but I also had to have a tie to the military to hold my job. That tie was that I was required to wear a military uniform and hold a position in the Air Guard militarily ( weekend drills once a month and two weeks a year). So really I had a full time job & a part time one also.
We fly F-16's, but our unit is "the Vipers". My wife and I raised and showed Borzoi dogs ( Russian Wolfhounds ). Hense....ViperDog.
Since I'm a Gemini I like the two-sidedness..

papeniglio
13th July 2001, 09:20
I've posted it on the old forum, but it's nice to repeat it (hey shoo don't yawn!!! ;)).
I like a lot Disney's toons, and there was a period in my life in which I was really unlucky, so I thought I was a reincarnation of Donald Duck (in italian paperino). Then I met my wife, and for her I was so sweet and peaceful as a rabbit (in italian coniglio) :o.
Hence pape-niglio....
GeeK!

wylie
13th July 2001, 10:53
wylie is the name of a baby ewok in Return of the Jedi.
It was used as the name for the House Cat (R.I.P).
Needed a nick quick one night and it just stuck!

Ciccio
13th July 2001, 12:30
Mine comes from when I lived in Sicily. Down there if you don't like your given name you either call yourself Pippo or Ciccio.
Ciccio is also the shortened name for Francesco, who is my father-in-law.
And Ciccio can also be used in some circumstances as Ciccia, which means 'fat', so as I'm a lardy boy and don't want to use my given name, Ciccio it was :D

Well, mine is pretty obvious :) ....my username for genome (TheOtherPhil) is down to another Phil at the ACHO newsgroup.....he was talking about me once and referred to me as "The Other Phil". I decided to use this as my user name at ACHO and everywhere else as the username "Phil" is usuallly taken. I used Phil here because I was the first to register it for once :)

Hiya Rids!
A nickname is like a secret identity that everyone knows and so it's not so secret. Oh, and it's not really an identity either, usually just some collection or concatenation of words, mostly as a punchline to a joke that only the person with the nickname can hear... over and over and over again!
Hiya dnar,
Yeah, I guess you could say that, though it seemed like I was just sitting and staring at the sea floor for about 3 billion years before something interesting happened and trilly showed up. You know some people say watching paint dry is boring... ought to try watching silt turn into shale some time... watching paint dry is a proverbial party in comparison.

13th July 2001, 13:47
Lemme see.......SkzDaLimit is short for Skies the limit.
Back in the days of 10 character screen names on AOL, I had to find a way to shorten it, hence SkzDaLimit.
I am rarely on AOHell anymore, except to chat with my Mom and sister, and checking a few emails I get.
Funny afterthought, there is a rapper who has a song titled the same as my name, though not spelled the same. I get email all the time from people who think that I am that particular rapper for autograph and pic requests, questions about the song and other stuff.
I used to just delete the stuff, now I have some fun and answer them back, mostly making up a bunch of crap to make them happy. :D

Well mine is a take off of one of my call signs while I was in the Regular Army in a Tank Battalion. My Battalion call sign was Stallion and the 6 represents the commander of any particular unit. the G represents Gunner. So Stallion 6 Golf was shortened to Stall6g meaning the battalion commander's gunner. Now I am just a weekend warrior as a lowly squad leader in an Infantry unit.

Didn't get to be the Commander's gunner for nothing. I could reach out and touch someone at 5000 meters with accuracy. Not talking about a gentle tap on the shoulder either.:D Targets here are a little farther but if we calibrate and zero in our comps the tops spots should be obtainable.;)

My nick is an extension of my old gaming nick way back in the days when all you had was 3 characters for the high scores. Most people used their initials, but i used "ZOT". A friend of mine at the time drew a comic strip about a space crusading penguin. The sound effect for the spaceship's laser weapons was "ZOT!". Zhotfire(silent h) is just an extension of that i put together to try to stay unique and is used for everything except gaming. "T'Moth" is strictly for gaming and is an adaptation of my full name with regards to the rank of dragonslayer.
I too had an AOL account Skz, my fav nick was "abonebrain". I think people actually liked sending mail to abonebrain@aol.com! :D (i think the nick is available if anyone wants it!)

So many soldiers in here..?
How many are active and former military guys....
Is this because Military Service is still mandatory where you guys come from?
I almost forgot it once existed as it was never ever implemented in Canada (of course I could be wrong, I'm just a lad after all..)
The only thing I know about war is Paintball.... and the NAM magazine I received at home... where'S Charlie,...?
Regards, and respect for those who made the sacrifice of their youth to their Nation and Liberty, I admire you.

I am former military. USAF. I was a KC-135a boom operator stationed at K.I. Sawyer AFB in Marquette, Michigan. The base has since closed and is now an airport.
For those who would like to know what a boom operator does, I was the guy that sat in the back of the plane and did the aerial refueling. Basically, I was an attendant on a big flying gas station.
But I had fun and have been all over the world.
I also flew in the Libya bombing raid back in the 80's, refueling the F111's that went in to Tripoli.

It's short for Pseudorhinelepis pelligrini of the family Loricariidae.
When I was looking for a unique nym years ago, my favorite catfish had just died so I thought I'd take it's name. It is a very rarely imported species. (If my wife knew that it cost 8 times the $30 I told her, she would have let me get it stuffed) My little bitty avatar doesn't do it justice.

Nicks? I just use my real name, either in the seti newsgroups or the bulletin boards. Hmmm, not particularly interesting this reply. Let's see...
Ah. My girlfriend uses the nick "ladybadger". You see, "Das" - my name - is Dutch for a "badger", you know, the black white stripey animal.
Some people confuse her nick with "he-who-pesters-ladies", which makes for funny situations when she's mistakenly thought of as a bloke. :)
Cheers! From Mr. & Mrs. Badger.

A while back we installed our first email system Lotus cc-mail. A costumer now good friend wanted PM software on the computers to appease his quality people so he comes in and loads up this software and he ask me to check it out. I told him it’s not very secure, anyone can get the password. So he bets me to find his password. Before he gets back to work, my first internet email was to him using his password as my email name ohms18k been using it ever since.
He asks me how did I get it. I told him to take the mouse and highlight the password field and theirs your password. He bought new PM software.
Hemi
14th July 2001, 16:28
My first true "love" is for American muscle cars, and Chryslers in particular. Mopar (Chrysler) developed an engine in the 50's nicknamed the Hemi because of its hemispherical combustion chambers. The Hemi was re-released in the 60's during the muscle car era, and is known as one of the most powerful V8's ever to come out of Detroit.
Word on the street is that Chrysler is coming out with a new version of the Hemi for use in their production cars in 2004. A 5.7L, 353HP version is supposed to debut in the Dodge Ram next year.
Since I love Mopars, I took Hemi as my first gaming handle way back when, and I've always used it. It's always available everywhere I go, so that's convenient.
(My avatar is a pic of a newly released (from Chrysler) 426ci Hemi engine assembly that's currently available)

I like your nick, and your true "love".
Someday.. I will have.. a '69 Dodge Daytona, or a '70 Plymoth Superbird (must be hemi powered) ;)
I hope the can find a bodystyle that can do that powerplant justice. I believe they all stopped making "automobiles" in '72 and started producing "just cars" since.

<no offense meant to anyone with a nickname>
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, when I first discovered Space Invaders, Galaxian and Missile Command I needed a three letter nickname and as a fan of BC chose Zot.
When I first went on-line on Usenet, I set my nickname to Zot and thought I was pretty cool. Then I became a regular on rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan where the majority view is that nicknames are pretty sad and so they all use their real names. Zot had to go and I "came out". Now I just use my real name
everywhere.

I'm sure sombody has told you by now, but if not: We see your former nickname anywhere students congregate around here.
(The University of California at Irvine's mascot is an anteater.)
Now the real question is: did UCI get that sound from BC, or did BC get that sound from UCI?
BTW, do you still get BC? It disappeared a few years ago -- reportedly  because of its religious themes.
