Any Linux users here use wine very much yet? I would just like to get others oppinions of it.

Right now im compiling a custom configure edition (Fresh off the CVS) i am hoping that now the wine installer has detected where some good files it needs are (IE 3dfx stuff, sound what ever) it will run something good :P

So far, i have gotten it to run Sol.exe and Winzip well. :D

Also got it to install, and update half-life to the latest version! I would like to wait and see how it runs. Supposedly with 3d accel. it runs just fine! i almost cant believe that but i hope so i miss it alot :). I tried to run something in wine that would access the net, a hlupdater program other than i direct download of the update patch file. it said it couldnt connect. i am hoping this will be remidied with the fresh compile. I want to play TFC online :D but i dunno if it will work or not :( I know it can work, i have seen clips from ppl playing the counter strike mods online. so hopfully it will all work out. after i get half life working. its on to ultima online :D

if anyone dont know what wine is, its a Windows "Emulator" for linux. unlike the win4lin stuff it does support direct x, and it will run your windows programs without the need for actualy booting up a pretend windows environment. a bonus for me :) So far i am very amazed that it works so very well. hey if you use it post some experiences :) if not. check it out.

Nice one mate. I played with Wine about 2 years ago, I managed to run all the Windows utilities:- Calculator, notepad etc + MYOB Accounting! Wine is still far from ready, but you can obviously use it as it statnds to run many apps.

Corel use Wine with WordPerfect 2000 for Linux, and Sun use it with StarOffice 6 beta.

Just to clarify the difference between Wine and Win4Lin:-

Wine - A windows emulator that allows you to run Windows applications in Linux WITHOUT Windows...

Win4Lin - A Linux application that allows you to run Windows 95/98 from within Linux.

well either way your running windows apps in linux, and i prefer not to have the overhang of the windows crap goin on (Desktop taskbar and all the other background crap) when im running something.

I cant seem to get hl to run right. i can get in and configure the game options and stuff, but when i start a game, it locks on the loading screen. I cannot know for sure if this is just my VCard drivers (Nvidia, which IS loaded, i see it in the modules list like the FAQ said :X) or if i just have something in wine messed. Ill be posting on the mb on the lhl site tomarrow morning :) But so far so good...farther than i though it would go :p

BTW: dnar you should give it another go, for the heck of it. its probably change drasticly in 2 years :)

Most of the stuff I run under windows, needs windows.... The Wine DLL framework simply does not provide all that I require.

you can give it the dlls it requres :) my wine runs off referencing my windows 98 install. I actually rooted the whole config file around that so its like i am working with my old windows disk, only its in linux. i dunno i cant wait till things start working flawlessly. :D
