Silly me... i always thought the only programs that startup at boot in win98se were the ones in the msconfig and start menu startup folder.... Where else do startup instructions hide? I've checked the registry... where do i check next? There's a pesky Lexmark app that always starts on boot... but the startup instructions don't appear in the usual places...

Check these places in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices

I don't know of any other places where a program could hide.

OK... anything should be listed in MSCONFIG, that lists everything from the Startup folder and the registry.

The startup regisry entries can be found here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run

and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run

You can delete these entries, although it may be best to export the entries and then delete them, so you can put them back easily if you delete the wrong thing.

Apart from this, I don't know anywhere that startup programs hide.

The only refs that appear in the registry that aren't from my searching for the file are in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\InstalledFiles
There must be someplace else... :banghead:

The lexmark loads in my wifes computer from the run in the registry. Couple of questions. Does the printer work with out that running? (I.E. have you tried ending task and see if the printer still works?) My wifes won't, so I kill it usin prcview when she is not using the comp to work. Have you tried un-installing the printer to see if that drops it out?

The printer still works when lexpps.exe has been closed... think it's tied in with the "distributed com services"(rpcss.exe). It popped up as soon as i browsed to the printers folder....

Check the program itself (i.e. config) if it has any settings that you can disable...if that doesn't work and you can't find it in your registry to stop it, then I guess Lexmark owns you.
