Here's the deal. I can not connect to the internet through my internal ethernet card on my laptop. I use a router for my cable access. I can telnet to the router and I get an IP address from the router, but no internet access. I have an extra pc card and when I install it everything is all good. Why would I be able to get into the router but not to the internet?

I had to manually enter in the DNS on my machines when my ISP switched from @home to charter. DHCP wouldn't really work properly between them and my linksys router. It would grab an IP but it wouldn't work properly.

Yours is probably a totally different condition, but have you tried assigning it an IP and setting the DNS on the internal card?

How do you do that in win me? What is weird is it can see all the other machines on my lan. It retreives it's ip from the router fine(192.168.0.3). I've been debating about going wireless, I think this has forced the issue. :D

LB, can you get a dns response with a ping? Do you get an ip back when you ping say canoe.ca?

C:\WINDOWS>ping canoe.ca

Pinging canoe.ca [207.253.106.57] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 207.253.106.57: bytes=32 time=73ms TTL=243
Reply from 207.253.106.57: bytes=32 time=71ms TTL=243

Reply from 207.253.106.57: bytes=32 time=49ms TTL=243

Ping statistics for 207.253.106.57:

Have you tried hard coding everything (IP, DNS)you can do this through your TCP/IP setting in the network settings. You will probably have to disable WINS as well I know this can cause conflicts.

I don't know about ME, but in about every other MS OS it's in TCP/IP properties of the device. It sounds like a DNS issue.

Find out what your ISP's DNS server address is, and enable DNS and enter it in. If you have another working 98 machine "winipcfg" should give you all the settings.

Heck, do any of us really need an excuse? ;) :)

Yea, some of us do...

If one gets questioned about a purchase a "just because I wanted it" is not a very good answer, :D

even if it is the truth... ;)

No.. Usually a better reason like that is needed. Though I haven't quite found one that works flawlessly yet.

When I do though I will be sure to let you know..

See.. This proves that it has NOTHING to do with sex. All spouses are evil (With the exception of the few couples on the board who are both addicted ;) )

Sure siggy... it's no different than one of my neighbors firing up the bbq for supper! :D

Makatiel

Now a BBQ is understandable.. You can BBQ any time of the year. Hell, I have lit a BBQ in 5 inches of show just because I thought it was a good idea at the time.

Be a good excuse for you to feel the power of AMD too! :D

Isn't this supposed to be a hardware thread? (Maybe I can get back on topic.)

Whoot.

I just added one more item of cardboard to my boxen.

I went out and bought a (real) notebook. My last laptop was a 386. (We've had unlimited use of a 300MHz Toshiba from my wife's office, so it was hard to convice her I needed one.)

I have a brand new Sony 1.2G Athlon -- which is now being "burned in" (With any luck I should now move from page 2 onto page 1 of Dyyryath's stats.

I think its fair to say that the BBQ/Grill is a guy thing. You will not catch me outside in the winter tring to light the coals.

Cool.. I think we will have to set up a grill somewhere on the board. You never need a reason for some good BBQ action.. You just get some beer and some buddies and go for it..

I'm not sure if it would be an AMD laptop, some quick preliminary research showed them to get unstable with the high temps. I know mine would be running at 100% 24/7.

Yep. There's a lot more heat coming out the back than the PII-300 ever put out.

I picked that model because the contract I'm working on will have some differential equations that will take many, many hours to solve. And when they're not running, of course, G@H gets the benefit of a pretty hot laptop -- one that never drops back into reduced power mode.

It did shut down once -- and from that, I learned to be sure to keep the vent on the back unobstructed.
