Starbucks coffee has like 10X the caffiene content of all other coffees. Though I feel like I have been violated every time I buy something there..

Just because I am sure I will be in here shortly when I start working with it asking 101 questions..

I am sure that I will regret asking... but what is the "real" difference. I thought that Linux was based on BSD. Is there a pure BSD distro? And if there is, is it something for a noob to approach?
Makatiel

They are all based off the same concept as far as I know, just different variations of the same idea.

Just a little something called "unix".... ;)
Makatiel
6th February 2002, 01:14
Yep.. Just a little something.. Nothing important..
I learned a SMALL bit of unix back when I was real young. About the same time MS Dos 3.2 was out if that gives you any idea. Couldn't tell you for the life of me what version of unix it was.

BSD is an actual derivitave of the original AT&T Unix...
Linux is a hand-written from scratch clone of Unix....
FreeBSD is based on BSD 4.4....
Esentially Unix all started back in 1969-1970 with AT&T Bell Labs "Version 6".... From there came BSD in 1977, and Version 7 in 1969....
From there on, every commercial Unix OS has pretty much gotten their influence (and code) from BSD & System V.3 (several versions down Version 7)...
BSD used to contain some of the actual AT&T code, but because of legal issues they re-wrote their own (back in the beginning)...
Actually when I was digging around some solaris files the other week, I found some comments in some source saying "Berkley Software Distribution"... hehe...
Linux was created from scratch and hand written without taking any of the code from other Unix OSes... it was ment to function the same though.
It's kind of like Coca Cola Classic & New Coke.... BSD is the real thing, and Linux is they wanna be new copy....

BTW... I'll take the pepsi taste test anyday... I know FreeBSD will spank Linux in raw networking performance....
I'm actually working on a series of articles for my site on FreeBSD, step by step installing and configuing stuff, then eventually it is going to be a shootout between FreeBSD 4.5 & RH 7.2.... (I will be fair, RH has some nice features that FBSD doesn't)...
The title is going to be something like:
FreeBSD: The Other White Meat ;)
Anyhow... off to bed... very late...

Yup yup. I agree with "most" of that. FreeBSD may well be the only surviving Unix one day soon. HP-UX looks like its dead (HP-SUX).
Caldera now own SCO (I use SCO Unix)... What does this tell you! A Linux company bought out a Unix !!!!! Ouch! BTW, I still love my SCO Unixware.... But for day to day workstation and server activities, I prefer my Linux anyday.

Who misses their VAX servers? I do I do I do!!!!! NOT!!!!
Actually it was a pretty good machine back when I was in College... Most of the campus used the Sun servers for their email / web / etc... I was still on the good old vax... They finally retired that chunk of sh*t the last semester I was there... hehe... *sniff* *sniff* good times....

We have a few Linux Gurus here at work. So I had heard most of what you guys stated above... But I had to ask, it's funny how many "different" "absolutes" you get when you ask different people. I really would like to try it again, but my issue becomes that I like to just sit down and my $$$$ows desktop and tinker... and it might be a while before I can do that with Linux. So...

All this talk about "ancient" operating systems begs me to ask.... am i the only one who uses AS400 on a daily basis?

AS400? Wasn't that replaced with the RS6000 about a million years ago?

Not true. If you were working in the 1980's you'd still be able to read the Hollerith punches on uninterpreted 80 column cards. Bet you can't (still?) do it.:D
zhotfire

Argh... the last time i saw a punched card was when i was debugging my mother's cobol & fortran progs... i wonder if that "computer" still exists... the card reader was fast thou... i'm always reminded of it when i hear the bill counters at the bank.... I'd have to say it's responsible for me being here today.... :D
