Awesome stuff. Wylie is now the proud owner of a 100% Linux network, all machines are RedHat 7.2 running Gnome desktop, Win4Lin 3.0 and Win98 (eek). Today we finally deployed all systems and commisioned the network, ADSL and printer.

Of course, all machines ran the Genome@Home stability test while housed in my lab, and they continue to crunch. I hope you dont mind the periodic client re-configuration scripts I installed Matt ;) all machines are re-configured to "dnar" at midnight each day. :D

I wish you well mate in your new business and may the Penguin be with you.

BTW, its 3 degrees C cooler in my lab now ;)

Any luck getting a scroll wheel mouse to work in Win4lin? I read that some get it to work but they don't say HOW!

I was going to wait a week and write up a report on it all for a CPA newsletter - try to present an alternative to businesses here to windows, and tell everyone here how well it all works.....

As usual dnar gets in first ;) :p

The initial decision was financial - ($3000+ or free.....hmmmmmm). From the little bit I've seen thus far its a ripper. Problems were thrown up at us from all directions - mainly from Australias second biggest accounting software suppliers - and every one of them was solved. They even changed their official policy from "yes - Linux is no problem" to a categorical "no, Linux will not work and our policy is we do not support it in any form" coz of us  - we certainly made an impact! The main thing I've discovered is how lazy windows has made me......I'd forgotten all about the command prompt and how much you could do with it. looking forward to gaining new knowledge in this package!

My thanks, dnar - a wonderful job and an awesome network! :D

This is not my only comment but Dnar, what in the hell hapened to your flag?

Anyways.. What I want to know is if Redhat 7.2 will network with Win XP easy, or will I have all sorts of problems when I try to hook it up?

Actually Samba was one of the problems with the tax software. It was found that running the prog on windows workstations using samba was causing data loss - hence the win4lin option.

the usual settling in probs with any new network.

In this case most turned out to be hardware oriented.....a bodgy cat5 cable being the main culprit. (thank you AGAIN dnar......)

Win4Lin definately runs the tax software slower than a pure windows environment, but since usually the slowest part of proceedings is the human data entry component I dont forsee this being a huge problem. Its fun to learn a new OS!! :)

Actually got some work done today!!!!

The real test will be tomorrow when staff arrive to start working.
How THEY handle it will be interesting!

and Miles.......no....scrolly wheel didnt werk :(

Wylie, we will have to see how it holds up if I come in and do data entry. I remember last time I was in doing entry for you I was complaining that the machine couldnt keep up with me, I was always 2-3 fields ahead of the machine :)

Straight out Data entry with no purpose other than to have the stuff in a database stinks...

Chat data entry is quite alright. as well as source code data entry :D

well welcome to the fascinating world of finance and accounting!

yup - 95% of stuff in the workplace is simply data entry (and to be fair - ozlink is pretty damn good at it! ;) ". most really couldnt give a toss what OS you are using as long as:
1> it dont stuff up
2> it aint real pricey....

anyway: DAY THREE:

Staff happy.....
redhat7.2 gnome gui is sufficiently windows-ish to avoid stress.....apart from the "what the hell are all those feet doing on my desktop" ;) :p - what is it with gnome and feet anyway???

they can now get their email (always a priority coz its all so work related :rolleyes: .), use a web browser (mozilla seems favourite......again solely for business purposes of course  .) and amazingly use the tax software thru win4lin and actually do some work!!!! seems like a new OS a challenge to all!

Sweet man! Glad everything is going relativly smooth. Dnar knows where you can change that foot image. i think Gnome should let you change it in preferences...but far as i know you cant... if your listening dnar...how did you find it the first time? i still dontk now my way around the file system that well :(
