im trying to come up with some money to buy a 800mhz tbird, oc to 1000 and just basicly have a genome cruncher for cheap. my question is if i buy a $20 tnt 2, will i lose cpu speed on crunching? I would guess not..since the client is not very graphic intense? Am I correct?

thinking of doing the following:
Asus A7V + 800mhz = 1ghz
tnt 2 video
2 gig el shity hd
network card
case and ps

all for under 400$

not bad eh!

You should be able to get all of those parts for a lot cheaper than that. Check the boards but you can get them for about this much:

A7V (or equivelant) + Tbird @1igig $140
TNT2 video card $30
2-4 gig hdd $25
NIC $10
Case and PS (best buying it online retail or local) $50

Should come out to be around $255 or so. Not bad for a fairly decent system. Just add ram and you'd be all set

Thinking about picking up an old classic Slot A 800 with mobo and 192 mb of Ram for a 512mb stick of High density ram and $25 bucks. Sure it's old technology with no real upgrade path but for the price I can't beat it and I can always sellit off to a friend later on.

Your making a mistake. Get either a 1gig/266bus tbird or get the 1.2ghz/266bus. The 266bus models don't cost anymore but allow for an upgrade later. The 1.2ghz are the best price point, but you can get a 1ghz for $83 + $11 for shipping= $94 Here's the fridays price guide from Anandtech. I also have a A7V. All you have to do for the 266 bus chips is change the multipliers since it's not locked. You can also get a Hercules Kyro 400xt for $50. The tnt2's video quality just plain sucks in 2D.
