I need a better than retail heatisink for this bugger. It needs to be quiet, cheap and perform well. I'm leaning towards the Global Win VGS08 (or is it VGH08?) from www.coolerguys.com. Sound good? Its only overclocked to 560 at 2v (standard voltage) . The retail sink is havin' a hard time with the 85F+ ambient temps right now

Hi Bro,

If I were you, I'd go for the Alpha P3125, bare heatsink then put a couple of quiet fans on there. The Alpha's were/are the undisputed king of the SECCII heatsinks, all others pale in comparison. They're a little on the expensive side, but if you already have the fans, then the bare heatsink is a good option. Though the stock Sanyo Denki's (19CFM each I think) are very nice, very quiet fans. But then I've always been fond of the alpha's - construction is just so damned good ;)

If you want quiet, the Global Win VGS08H ain't it. Those little 6000 RPM fans make quite a racket. Believe me, I know. I purchased a Golden Orb and the VG from the same vendor. The noise from the VG was bad enough, but the G-Orb even cooled better than it did. The G-orb did alright, and was quiet too. Until my ambient temps started getting higher. I now run an Alpha P3125 with a couple of Sunons, fairly quiet, but one hell of a cooler. Gotta agree with Tril, Alphas are king. You'll be able to use it on your 1Ghz slot one...

when the prices bottom out ;)

OK, so Alphas = good
But alpha = $$$$ that I don't have

Soo is there any other cheap quiet and good coolers? Or will I have to save up?

Hmmm. It appears me clock is off by alot

Never had an orb, and from all the BS going on in the newsgroup they are not very highly regarded - Pell you appear to have some actual experience with them, do you differ???

They're not bad, even better if you consider the price. I have only used the slot1 versions. It does a little better job cooling than the stock HSF, which is fairly good sized to begin with. I can't remember what the actual differences were in my setup. It wasn't significant, but it was better than factory.
I haven't tried any other coolers either, the only one I'd recommend not getting is the global win.

Personally, I think a lot of the people in the acho newsgroup bad mouth the Thermaltakes because other people have. I don't think all of them have had first hand experience with them. When I got my Alpha P3125 I was expecting some really huge temp differences. It was only about 3-5c. Kind of a let down at first, but the CPU temps remained low even with elevated ambient temps. The G-Orb didn't do as well, but I wouldn't say it performed poorly.

Wylie, i'd say gorbs are ok for modest overclocking in a well ventilated case. I currently have 2 systems with gorbs:

1. AX3SPro, c633@952 1.85v, 2 exhaust + p/s fan, several hundred holes drilled in lower parts of case, stable at ambient temp of 42c under full load. Cpu temp 55c (on-chip diode).

2.BX6-2.03, c633@952 2.05v, side panel off case, unstable at any ambient temp over 30c. Cpu temp unknown (mobo missing parts)

One thing to look at is the cpu orientation. The socket 370 board is in a much better arrangement for cooling the cpu with a radial type cooler. The slot 1 board has to deal with limited circulation around the cooler because of the slocket. I've never switched cpus between the 2 boards to find out which one o/c's better, but i could hazard a guess! The rise above ambient temp for the cpu on the ax3spro is pretty stable. It's 22c in here right now and the cpu temp is hovering at 35-36c. Gorbs aren't crap, but they aren't for pushing the limits of your cpu either. It really is a case of "you get what you pay for".... :)

Might give one a go for my durons.
Not a Fan of globalwins Pell?? Even for a socketA??
Mind you after frying one tbird coz of that BASTARD CLIP they have I'd have to say there must be better ones out there somewhere. The fop38 did get me a 10C drop over the fop32, but with the duron running cooler anyway is not worth the notorious noise.

I would honestly say, don't waste your money on a new heatsink/fan. I had a great PIII 500 SECCII and it went to 667 with a TennMax heatsink. 560 is average for this processor. You might get it to 620 or so, but 667 is doubtful. A AMD Duron 700 is $25. A good new heatsink/fan will cost you around the same. It's not worth it. I'd save my money for a new system.

Yeah, I figured 560 wa the limit. but after runnin 24/7 (not really cuz it locks) it gets VERY hot and i think i need something better than the small retail hs&f. I can barely hold my hand on the sink after its been running for 10 hours. I would downclock it, but that would require less crunchin' to be done and would require me to get a monitor and keyboard for it (or borrow one from another puter). Ventilation isn't a problem, the whole system is sitting on a shelf and has a big arse blower assemble from a copier sittin' in the back

I don't have anything against Global-Win, but I think that the VGS08H is not worth the money, or the noise. It probably would have performed better with some lapping, the machining was not so hot. I haven't had any other experience with any of their other products, except fot their little FA420 Chipset cooler. Cute little things ;)

Sooooo, are the SECC2 GORBs any good? i can pick one off ebay for around $10, $5 shipping. I really want one of the GW VOS32s :) but i haven't seen those since last year

Sure they're really good for the price. With some extra air movement they work pretty well. I have one on an P3-800 @960 at the office. It works superbly, but I also have 2 cheapo 80's blowing on it from the side of the case too. It ought to suit your requirements.

I think the VOS32 and the VGS08H are the same model. When I was checking out GW's site before I bought mine from the Coolerguys, I couldn't fing the latter listed, the pictures appeared to be the same too.

VOS32 is for athlons and SECC2s, I don't think they are the same ;)

Yep, Yep...

Totally different monsters
Got all my VS GS whateverS mixed up

I don't remember seeing the VOS32's on any of the vendors pages.

Still thinkin'..... I don't want to pay $40 for an alpha, i don't think a GORB is much better than what i have (or is it), and the VGS is crap............. ARGH! Any other good heatsinks out there for less than $30?
