View Full Version : What are you impressed with? ……

Today it’s my garbage bags. Now, I’ve been taking the garbage out since the beginning of garbage, and that’s a long time. Since I’m the only male in the house I’ll be taking the garbage till the end of time. They don’t look like much, just a small sheet of plastic but when you open it up some serious science is going on in there. I can pack more garbage in those bags with no twist ties; everything is built into the bag. This always gets a compliment from me to the wife on garbage night. So I want to give a shout out to the R&D people at GLAD, I’m impressed.
I think this is a brag.

Yep, He sure does like those bags.:hic:

I am sure that Glad has done all the R&D on garbage bags, and I appreciate it. But I LOVE the prices of the Target bags!
While I am bragging, I would like to say that my wife Sarah is not affraid to take out the garbage. (But we don't generate too much, just the two of us. I grew up with 5 sisters, and it was a daily chore for me. They could complain all day, but could NEVER take it out!)
Good Luck! (and good job on that garbage!)

In New York there are strict dog poop laws. Pick up or pay. We have a big-ass dog. The bigger the dog, the bigger the doo. Its a fact of life. I like to use fairly heavy gauge bags. Laura prefers to use fresh Glad sandwich bags. I find that totally disgusting.

Today I’m impressed with candles, preferable the long candles. They do a good job of lighting a dark cold house and they last long. It’s been 3 days since the storm and it’s been that long with no power and they tell me no power until Wednesday. So theresa and the girls are living at the Holiday Inn. While I try and keep their animals alive. I’m also impressed with Kerosene heaters (afraid of them too) but it’s doing a good job so far, no dead animals (mainly the fish).
My server and the dump dogs are asleep now
A generator is on top of my list. I will have one. :)

I'm impressed with Smart UPS, saved my butt many-a-days. With the last power outage how can anyone not have one  I have 4 700 Smat UPS. Might sell 3 and get the 2200 model like Jason (We use one at work...nice).
They even supplied some heat to the fish tank during the outage

I'm impressed with how few accidents there are in Taiwan. Between how crazy everyone drives...the fact no cops enforce traffic laws...and how people never stop for red lights (most people do stop, but teens never stop)...I am very amazed. :D :baa:

You should check out RetroBox.com! I've bought two UPS's from them and both were great. I got the 2200VA for $100 and a 1400RM for $100... :)
They have a 1400VA for $100 right now (they pretty much price all UPSs at $100)
http://www.retrobox.com/rbwww/home/unit_view.asp?id=191634&bin_id=world
A 1250 for $75:
http://www.retrobox.com/rbwww/home/unit_view.asp?id=122147&bin_id=world
Shipping is a flat rate of $27.50 which isn't bad for the big UPS's.

I'm impressed with LEDs. take a look inside one when it's off. There is at least one tiny wire connecting the silicon to a leg. Now try to find the lense. You won't because it's seamless with the rest of the nifty lil thing. Now take a cheap green one... and run it 2v over spec... it will turn orange (i waterproofed one and put it in some cold water). Another thing that is amazing is that they are actually rather complex, yet they costs a few dollars for the decent sized ones (average blue) (Luxeon Stars are $15 a pop). The red, green, and orange kinds can be found for 10 cents. They can be made to be monsterous and put out goobles of light (luxeon star) or very very small, and still putout quite a bit of light (SMT LEDs). Next up, they are darned hard to kill with static. i have tried once, and failed. The lil green 10 cent LED still worked after repeated zaps of static :D I wouldn't try it with a more expensive or delicate one though. Now think of how much pondering is done to make sure the lnse and beam width are correct.... all that for a lil ol' LED

I am impressed with electronics in general. I have been an Electronics Tech for a bit over 5 years now and I still keep learning. Every new thing that I work with impresses me more and more.
Just the fact that we can manufacture the devices we do blows my mind.

Siggy, you are talking like the post count is an achievement....this is only the case if all the posts are relevent and add to the content of the thread topic.
If you would like to read the following http://www.thegenomecollective.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1713
* No bombing forums or threads with pointless posts.
I would say the rules here are pretty lax and the mods and admin don't really enforce them but we have to draw a line somewhere. Posting 50+ irrelevent posts per day in the interest of increasing a post count is overstepping that mark.

SNIP....
first I must say that Im impressed.
My post count has been an achievement since day one. So Im not quite sure what you mean there. It was quite enjoyable for the whole team to watch Dnar have someone to compete with for post.
I am not upset about the post demerits. No one is anywhere near my count. I think if someone was I would be more upset. Like if I had just broke 1000 post and the demerit took that away.
I understand that something needed to me done. Im a parent too and when the children get out of hand something has to be done. Maybe a warning "you will lose 100 post count if it you dont get back to topic" but parenting did not come with a handbook either, so you have to make a decision based on what you know at the time.
Being a MOD or ADMIN is not an easy job, but someone has to do it. And there is not anyone else I would rather have as ADMIN on this board.
So please do not miss understand my being upset, when my children are punished they dont like it either. But I have the maturity to understand what you did and I will accept my punishment as graciously as I can. :hugz: :hugz:

I'm not the mod/parent here, but Yes, Siggy, I think you can come out now.
I'm NOT impressed with posting wars, but I'm also a pretty tolerant parent - - just ask my kids.
I, too, have been irritated by the posting wars -- but as long as those that choose to do them confine themselves to certain semi-designated threads, (so I can ignore them when I'm busy) then I'll just let people be themselves. When they spill over unnecessarily into threads that have interesting (to me) content, I think the line should be drawn.
I'm also impressed with parents who draw the line with minimal fallout from those being chastised. It's usually not possible to be both a good disciplinarian and popular, which makes the job tougher than it should be.
/end soapbox/

Why does the sun lighten our hair, but darken our skin?
Why can't women put on mascara with their mouth closed?
Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle?
Why don't you ever see the headline "Psychic Wins Lottery"?
Why is "abbreviated" such a long word?
Why is a boxing ring square?
Why is it called lipstick if you can still move your lips?
Why is it that doctors call what they do "practice"?
Why is it that rain drops but snow falls?
Why is it that when you're driving and looking for an address, you turn down the volume on the radio?
Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons?
Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?
Why is the third hand on the watch called second hand?
Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?
Why is the word dictionary in the dictionary?
Why isn't there a special name for the tops of your feet?
Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food?

Here is a composite picture of the lights of the earth at night. I can even recognize major highways across my country.
The Home Planet (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0011/earthlights_dmsp_big.jpg)
The image is a panoramic view of the world from the space station. It is a night photo with the lights clearly indicating the populated areas.
Note that Canada's population is almost exclusively along the US border. Moving east to Europe, there is a high population concentration along the Mediterranean Coast. It's easy to spot London, Paris, Stockholm and Vienna. Check out the development of Israel compared to the rest of the Arab countries.
Note the Nile River and the rest of the "Dark Continent." After the Nile, the lights don't come on again until Johannesburg. Look at the Australian Outback and the Trans-Siberian Rail Route. Moving east, the most striking observation is the difference between North and South Korea. Note the density of Japan.
What a piece of photography. It is an absolutely awesome picture of the Earth taken from the Space Station.

He only had a comadore back then and he had to be really, really, nice to me so he could talk me into getting a laon for his first 300. I couldn't understand what was wrong with the one he had. Now he's throwing his wieght around I'm superized he doesn't hook up that comadore and tell me he added to my farm.

I am impressed with my shiny new Lian-Li PC-61 case that I just bought at "computerfest" in Toronto. It is such a sexy looking beast, I was walking by and it blinked it's LEDs at me and I was in love and had to have her. I can hardly wait to start cutting it up. I think this will be a long mod though, I want to do everything right.

I am impressed with all the many different varieties of beer. We spend so much of our time creating the "perfect" beer. That is truly civilization!

It’s that one Saturday of the year when you can throw away any junk, chemicals, and OLD COMPUTER EQUIPMENT. That’s when ohms, dressed in black (DIB) goes hunting. Now this year I’m impressed……….with my superior night vision my first target was an easy hit. A nice mid tower case, just 5 minutes into the hunt the case was tagged, bagged, and thrown in the trunk. Now onward cause DIB  is feeling lucky, cruising the hood at sub walking speed my superior night vision spots a pile, but there are piles everywhere but this pile has that off-white color that suggest COMPUTER EQIPMENT. I increase speed to warp 9, as I pull up there are other hunters, their camouflage is good cause I never saw them. Now it’s the stare down, never look at the piece of equipment you want it’s a dead give-a-way just circle the pile. This year I had something the other hunters didn’t have a DC to AC inverter. While the other hunters circles the pile DIB :cool:walks back to the car plugs in the inverter and whips out an extension cord, the other hunters stop their circling cause they are impressed. Their mistake, DIB  can now go for the target a laser printer, I plug it into the extension cord, it powers up, I can do something with it, tagged, bagged, and thrown in the trunk. Now this is not the primary target. It’s the monitor a few layers deep in the pile, yes my superior night vision spotted that monitor first, the laser printer is an added plus. Like I said DIB  is feeling lucky. While the other hunters stand around being impressed and asking questions about my inverter I’m slowly moving in on the primary target, when I finally reach it, I have got a prize, a ViewSonic E771 17’. Now the other hunters think I’m going to plug this monitor into my inverter. I’m no fool, tagged, bagged and thrown in the trunk. Hunting is over.

I'm impressed with two things currently. JohnyB's dump to challenge me is one. The other is my performance on our Dolphin team, TheGenomeCollective.com. (http://project-dolphin.net/cgi-bin/browse.cgi?mode=team-look&step=look-this-team&TeamID=205) :D
Anyone who has not joined the team, at least think about it. Here's the thread that discusses it: Um, here's the thread. :D (http://www.thegenomecollective.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2880)
I actually just now taught myself how to make links in the threads. :D And, I call myself a Junior Professional...

Yeah, Dolphin is just a great incentive to get caught up on my work. :D But, now I am. :( I have no more to type for work. At least not until half way through this week. I better start posting a lot more. :D I don't really chat online, so I am at a disadvantage there.

:D I'm very impressed by my new signature. Anyone think it is too big? I have not seen many others that are that large. If there is seriously a problem with it, just PM me and I shall make the changes. I do not mean just a mod, if anyone has a problem with it, let me know. I value all of my teammate's opinions. ;)
Is it noticeable that I am trying to get my first referral? :D
