thanks guys...do you have any personal thoughs on what to get for a 1.5ghz?

I'm using a golden orb and it's great! With my old sh#tty fan the temperature of my modest P!!!@700 was about 49 °C idle  ! With the golden orb and a bit of thermal compound the temperature @723 MHz is 39 °C idle, while raises to 42 °C after five cycles of crusher and massive1 timedemos in QuakeII, a full benchmark with 3DMark 2000 and a full benchmark with 3DMark 2001. Not so bad, and I'm going to raise the FSB further! :D

P.S.: those temperatures are taken with no extra case fan turned on; only the golden orb and the power supply fan. I've 3 case fan ready to spin as soon as the temperature raises 45 °C! :p

GeeK!

WATERCOOLING! Watercooling is fun for everyone!

DO NOT GET THE SUPERORB! It just plain sucks. I would get one of these 4, Swiftech MC370-0A, Swiftech MC462, Gladiator or the ThermoEngine. All with Delta fans. Delta fans will lower the temp by 5c minimum.

In my [limited] experience the Swiftech's they ROCK, but I agree with Virus:)

Dansdata (http://www.dansdata.com/coolercomp.htm)

Now here's a little tip.

Just built a spare computer out of bits.

Fitted C533A to a Soltek Slocket and fitted the trusty Golden Orb.

Powered up at 872MHz (1.85v) and it was a bit noisy (old fan).

Fitted a Mini Copper Orb that I bought and hadn't liked. Temperature warnings from the BIOS?? WTF?

Shut down, remounted heatsink. Checked BIOS PC Health and it was at 54C. Squeezed the heatsink onto the chip and it fell to 39C but on releasing it went back to 46C.

Dug out from its hiding place a 1971 UK penny that I had lapped a while ago just for fun and placed it between the cpu and the Mini Copper Orb.

35C!!

It appears from this and previous tests of mine that one of the most important requirements of a heatsink is that the clip produces the correct amount of force. Could it be that the Swiftechs are so good because they've got this right?

Mike, I think you have a very good point their, they sure do have their fixing sorted & make very good contact to the die :)

Just my 2 cents....

I have two 1.2 AMD T-birds both with Super mini orbs running at 1.41 (fsb 141 - PC150 memory - multiplier set at 10 - on KK266 IWill MoBo).

At a room temp of 70 F , case temp is 71 F, Processor temp reports 101 F

At a room temp of 80 F , case temp is 82 F, Processor temp reports 115 F

At a room temp of 90 F , case temp is 92 F, Processor temp reports 132 F

This running 2 copies of genome@home 24/7

I'm not really impressed. I've been thinking of going to the Thermoengine or something else since I don't like the 30~40 degree delta between case temp and proc temp.

I've got lots of fans to circulate air into and out of the case. Maybe it's time to try some water cooling....

If you're getting the 1.5g(or shooting for it) you'll need some serious cooling. Those little suckers put out 100 watts of heat! I personally use thermalright's sk6 for my 1.2@1.4(got a special intro price). I know someone who use thermosonic's thermoengine with a 1.466g bird. If you want good cooling with low noise the millennium glaciator is recommended by many sites. I don't think i'd trust a gorb or a volcano2 for that much heat. I've tried the copper mini-orb but found the temps were higher than the volcano2. That's about all i've had experience with thou.... hope you're not on a budget! ;)

I use the GlobalWin FOP38 on a T/Bird o/c to 1450Mhz... Yep, it's a Jet engine... Room @ 20c = CPU @ 37c.

The Swiftech and Taisol units look real good and get rave reviews by USERS. You can get good results with most if you pay attention to lapping & case cooling. Other than that, have a chat with Tril & Phil about water cooling.

Personally, I can't get my mind around the water/safety issues...
