ADELPHIA FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY (6/26)– [The Philadelphia Inquirer, online.] Adelphia filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection yesterday amid financial troubles that have grown since the company revealed billions of dollars in off-the-books borrowing by the family of founder John J. Rigas. [Adelphia] had been scrambling to sell assets or lure investors to ease a cash crunch as the Securities and Exchange Commission and two federal grand juries investigated debts amassed by the Rigas family. At the same time, the company announced that it was investigating the family's use of company cash and assets, including jet airplanes, condominiums and apartments. The filing came a week after the company missed $96 million in bond interest and preferred-stock dividend payments.

ADELPHIA OFFICIALS ARRESTED, CHARGED WITH FRAUD – [The Wall Street Journal, A3.] Three members of the Rigas family that founded [cable provider] Adelphia, and two other company executives, were arrested early [yesterday] morning and charged with looting [Adelphia] "on a massive scale." In a related move, Adelphia itself was accused of fraud in a similar complaint filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The charges marked the latest effort by the federal government to crack down on corporate malfeasance as public confidence and the financial markets have been battered by seemingly relentless disclosures of financial shenanigans. "This government will investigate, will arrest and will prosecute corporate executives who break the law, and the Justice Department took action today," President Bush told reporters. Prosecutors are looking "very closely" at whether to file criminal charges against Adelphia itself, but are weighing the possible impact that would have on consumers, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Well, from some of the horror stories read in the Adelphia newsgroup I've been quite lucky. My troubles only lasted a few months. There are others who have been dealing with it much longer....

The cops tooke those officials away in handcuffs - - and the news showed pictures. The next night, Jay Leno (late night comedian), during his stand-up at the beginning of the show, showed the newsclip. At the end of it, he said "There's no joke here. I just like seeing the cable guy being taken away in handcuffs" :D
