Around the Houston area we seem to be going toward cctv on all the highways. I notice from tv it seems to have taken hold pretty deeply in G.B. Way beyond the highways on to the common streets. Just wondering what y'all think about it first hand. To me it seems Orwellian. (Don't worry we will take care of you. Just let us follow your every moment.)

(Wheres that politics forum?)

Yes in London there are CCTV cameras everywhere in most high streets and shopping centres,

we are well used to them by now i d'ont find them as annoying as bloody speed cameras on nearly every road and speed humps on most side roads!!!!

I think the cameras have helped keep some of the juvenile hooligans in check after hours outside pubs, but really once someone is tanked up ,they really d'ont think about a bloody camera watching them they will fight anyway :(

I d'ont have a problem with them, it is a bit like 1984......... though

Same here Chas...I am a little further up North and there are CCTV cameras everywhere. The town center has them, so has the shopping centers, the roads surrounding the town for about a half mile radius and they are starting to make their way into other streets. I don't see it as a problem as I have done nothing wrong...but it probably means that crime is just displaced to non-CCTV areas rather than cleared up properly.

Its the same here in Australia. As part of my business, I design CCTV video switchers and robotic camera controllers, so I'm helping Big Brother in his ways.... One of my new products, directs upto 20 cameras to follow subjects, by detecting their motion on the video image.

We have cameras in car parks, city blocks, elevators, freeways, offices, factories, mine sites.......

Check this out: Perth Traffic Cam (http://trafficam.mrwa.wa.gov.au/SelCamera.asp). I use this to check how busy the Freeway is before departing for work....

Yer same in Cambridge they are everywhere just like Bikes & Students, you cant take a piss these days without a 6x9 loom lens up ya ass but I don’t mind them THAT much. If U have done nothing wrong U have no reason to worry......right......hummmm.

One good thing they do [in my opinion amongst others] is help stop drink driving as a number of CCTV have been setup to scan pubs [dam lot of pubs in Cambridge], I have seen the police appear “out of nowhere” to nick drink drivers. Don’t get me wrong I love a good drinking session.:) I just don’t drive for the next week or so :D

Yer as Chas says hummmm 1984 eat-UR-heart-out!!!!

So far in the Houston area it has mainly been used for traffic reports, average speed on the freeway, checking for accidents etc. (At least stated for the public.) I heard in G.B. they have some pretty sophisticated software which supposedly do face recognition. Which allows them to spot I.D. and track terrorists. Then follow any license plate of a vehicle to track movement. Just my opinion but it seems your system started out like ours has and seems to have grown. And where it stops pretty much will be anybodies guess. Only thing I would really have to worry about would be tickets. I've got to admit I'm a leadfoot.

Yes mate that is correct, they say the license plate thing is to help to catch stolen car or ones that have been used in hold-ups etc, but you can bet your bottom $ they will find others used 4it

Not really paranoid just don't agree to allow it to monitor everyone. It reeks of invasion of privacy.
All of it seems to have a potential of abuse. CCTV's have been welcomed in our daily life for several good reasons. But at what point does it stop. And who controls the operators. The in-town cctv allows the operator to pan the camera, what prevents them from being peeping tom's? There was an article recently on Hotel security using them to help stop theft and damage in their rooms. To me it seems like people get desensitized to invasion of privacy and it takes something major to bring the feelings back. (Kind of like our U.S. income tax/state tax/city tax/etc. It just seems to grow once the initial sting is over.) We also had a car rental company which tracked and fined people for speeding in the rental cars. I see they would have a point, it is their car, and they can do what ever they want with it. When I go to work in the morning I am tracked/cctv down the freeway, when I get to work any calls I make outside my work is recorded, any computer messages I send are kept and archived. When I get off work my trek home is recorded. I get on the web and get tracked. Only time I'm not tracked or recorded is when I'm asleep. (But now that I think about it.... ) I don't know it all just seems to be out of hand.

In Australia, the majority of cameras that I know of are not monitored by humans.... The images are time-lapse recorded and used if someone gets killed or mugged or rapped...... That make you feel any better??? So, they won;t stop you being mugged, but they will know who mugged you. Or more to the point, what colour bellaclava they wore...

On the houston ones its real time. The local news hits it every morning for traffic reports. We do have a road help program and I believe they use it also to send out help vans.

I agree with you, there needs to be controls & we must know what those controls are. The UK Government [Labor] has always been against freedom of movement, so I guess their policy is you can go where you like BUT we’ll be watching

I heard about those ppl being done while speeding in a hire car, THAT SUCKS!!!, I guess it’s only going to get worst - & they keep telling us we live in a free & open society YER RIGHT!!!!!

PS Hi FBI, NSA, CIA, GPO, MI1 to 9 & any one else who intercepts this :o:p:o:p
