View Full Version : A Bandwidth question

As you may have noticed we have moved over to vBulletin from UBB6, with the hope of saving some bandwidth/resources. We currently have a bandwidth limit of 6GB with our present host which is a bit awkward as we have used over 10GB so far this month. At the moment it's a bit difficult to see how much difference, if any, vBulletin has made but at the moment it looks like the bandwidth usage has gone up.
This is probably due to the initial posting frenzy (2000 posts in 2.5 days) and we've already had to turn off the avatars. :(
All I'd like to know is roughly how much bandwidth you've used since setting up this BB so we can guage how much we are likely to need with vBulletin. We are currently looking at moving to the Platinum account with F5Hosting (as reccommended by several TGC members), it's a shame they've dropped the bandwidth limit from 30GB to 20GB per month. How have you found their service so far?
Regards

Hi Rid this is quoted from Phil on another thread a few days ago
" We are doing great on this new server...I am well happy. Post all you like (excluding dnar and siggy ) We are currently at 450Mb out of 30,000Mb per month. We have been on the new server for about a week and from what I can see, compression is enabled (unlike the old server) and is working great. Tech support is awesome and they also have a realtime helpdesk.....ICQ on steroids

I’m sure Phil can update you on this, but I love it:D:D

When they dropped it from 30 GB to 20 GB was their a grandfather clause or is everyone old and new customers at the new limit?

Only applies to new customers :)

Hi Ridcully, we are currently at 731Mb/30Gb. This is from Wed 11th July. F5 is much better than our old host who seemed to calculate bandwidth differently. With the old host, we had used 4500Mb in just under 2 weeks!!! As you can see, we are nowhere near to that with F5.
Also, F5 have the page commpression mod to Apache that will compress the pages for transmission to the browser. You can enable this by logging into the vBulletin Control Panel and slecting the "Options/Change" menu. Now scroll down to "HTTP Headers and output" and select the "GZIP compression level" and change the value to 1. Anything over 1 doesn't work any better, it just increases the stress on the servers CPU.
Hope this helps :)

Hey Ridders, I'm sure you'll be happy with f5. I just bought a Gold account for a personal project and their support is awesome. I had a little problem setting up a mySQL database, 5 minutes after reporting it to their support, they emailed me to say the problem had been fixed and they were setting evrything up for me FOC. Be sure to surf the f5 forums, for loads of usefull stuff, the vbulletin forums are also invaluable for resources, modifying your BB, adding chat etc. The platinum account will be more than enough for you. :)
Hey, I just looked, is the whole of ninja micros moving to f5 then?
Cool :)

Hell Phil, if that's all we've used in nearly 2 weeks, turn gZIP off man and see if it speeds the board up :)

Well, I'd just like to say thanks for all the info and advice folks, we are now settling in quite happily at F5Hosting and everything seems to be running fine (apart from the short outage we both experienced half an hour ago :D ).
