View Full Version : New BB feature to play with :)
phil

Not a very exciting one I am afraid, but my first modification to the BB code.
On the main page, I have made the "Currently Active Users" text a link that will show you just whereabouts on the BB the other members are. Funnily, this is not a feature of the vBulletin and I had to mess with the code to get it to work.
Have fun :D

Sorry Phil doesn't seem to work on my end of the pond....
Is it like the old board like where you get to see what page an active member is currently viewing?
Maybe I just plainly missed something...?
phil
24th July 2001, 12:29
Yup X, it is the same as the old BB's function. I liked that feature and had to get vBulletin to do it :D It works fine here....is anybody else having a problem?

What about chat?
actually, if you lurk in the www.vbulletin.com forums, there are tons of mods, hacks and whatever to customise it.

Phil is really putting in some time to this board. Nifty little pics above the links up top and now colors for members. Whadda guy!!:D Really you're doing a great job with the board. Why do I have a space in between line 1 and line 2 of my smilies?

Why does it show that we have more members on then the members that are listed. Is it possible to be in stealth mode without being a guest?
There are currently 6 members and 1 guests on the boards. | Most users ever online was 21 on 07-13-2001 at 14:34.

Yes Siggy, you can adjust your stealth properties in your profile. Moderators can still see that you are online though.

Thanks dnar, I have fixed the links. As for the front page, I have tested at 1024x768 and it fits OK...I thought you were running 1600x1200?

Yeah, I noticed that straight away. I was using a local copy of one of the .PHP files (which hadn't been modified) and just uploaded it after my mods. I forgot that I had modified the one I was using on the server and replaced it  Doh!

LOL, I hope your scroll button is working...I have just added a world time table to the front page. This will be useful when I add a chat function to the BB.
dnar
26th July 2001, 11:48
LOL! Bring on the bells-and-whistles! When did you add the "goto first unread post" function? Thats cool! (or has it always been there, under my nose....)
Phil, can you make the "view new posts" selections go directly to the first unread posts rather than the first page of the thread?
dnar

Phil, I like the world time feature on the front page, takes the guess work out of it! You know what would be really cool, is to show the current time for each member underneath their avitar.... But I guess vB does not allow that..... :D

Thanks dnar, I will try to figure out how to add each members local time next to their avatar. BTW, a basic chatroom is working...check the button links :D I will try for something a little more sophisticated later :)

Have we always been posting in italac? At least here, the italic switch [ - I - ] doesn't work because nothing changes.
At the old sdl bb, the font used in the compose window was italic, just like here, but not once you submitted. You could see the straight vs. italic when you did a preview, by showing it in the published font.
phil
26th July 2001, 13:14

It works for me :D ....use [i ] and [/i ] (remove the spaces between the brakets). HTH :)

Yes it is. And I can't see a visible difference between THIS and THIS , which was my original point.
(IE 5.5 SP1, but I'll go try NS and Opera on other machines, just in case it's some setting here.)
CORRECTION TO MY EARLIER POST:
It wasn't on sdl that it worked, it was on hardforum. . . . And it still does work. (You don't have to actually post, just preview; they're the same.)

Useful!!!
But, are sure it is correct? F.i., I see Amsterdam in the same timezone as London, which isn't right. CET*=BST+1 (currently due to summer's time-savings BST*=GMT+1).
* (CET - Central European Time; Amsterdam/Paris/Madrid/Rome/Munich/Stockholm a.o.)
* (BST - British Standard Time is normally equal to GMT, except during the time-savings period.)
The table on the BB says it's currently 22:40 for me even though it *is* 23:40.

Ya this daylight savings time is messing things up. I am eastern US at GMT-4 because of DST. So I am off an hour from the chart. And where is Austrailia?

The times are right in relation to GMT. The countries that are observing a daylight saving time have not been adjusted except I added London (British Summer Time) which is GMT +1. Your adjusted time is under the world time table and it says "The Time now is ..." and this can be adjusted from within your user profile.
Amsterdam's time is usually GMT +1 (which is what it says in the world time table) but they are also observing a daylight savings time, so it really is GMT +2 at the moment. Hope this clears up the confusion.

Hope this clears up the confusion. Ah ok, makes sense (mostly). I'll adjust the prefs. But why adding London to GMT+1? Why not simply remove it and, if possible, add a general caption line like 'time savings are not taken into account'.
As I said, I like the feature.

Recent changes:
Nifty page buttons (Java) at top left and bottom left on threads with multiple posts.
I have also just changed quite a bit of the code to use style sheets rather than html. This will save bandwidth and should make the BB faster.
Navigation buttons at the bottom at the suggestion of Pelligrini.
A "mark all threads read / login" link at the top of the front page as well as the bottom.
Animated folder icons in each of the forums for no reason at all
Removed the "main catagory" page as it was confusing people.
Moderator listings on front page removed to make it look less clutered.

Yes siggs, members can choose not to have their names show on the list, by selecting that option in their user profile. If you lurk the boards long enough, you may be able to work out which members are in "stealth" mode. The admin can see everyone though!

I love the buttons at the bottom, I use the Home button all the time, sure makes it easy when the bottom of a page is reached.
Everything looks great except... The smaller text in bold is hard to read at high resolutions, like at 1280, and really hard at 1600.

I have changed the small txt from 10 to 11px. Is this any better? Would you like it bigger (12px)? The only problem I can see with this is the people using lower resolutions. It may make the BB overly large.

I thought it looked bigger. But I thought it was just too early in the morning. Glad you mentioned it in the thread. Now I know I am not going crazy. I do use a lower resolution and it is not causing a problem.

The 1pt made a big difference. Even with the 10pt the regular small text was ok, but the bold was hard to read. It wasn't that big of a deal, even though it was hard to read, I could recogonize the names because I know them.
