View Full Version : so when are we taking 5th?

Just looking at the graphs it shows we should take 5th in less than 10 days. I think we can have it by the end of the month. Anyone else got any input?

I have been checking the StatsMan stats on every update and it is looking like August 1st or 2nd at the earliest, earlier if Dave Sturman keeps making those huge dumps he has been doing.
Keep an eye on the main page of the Genome Collective website, as I will be posting more frequent updates at we close in on Picard and the #5.

Doesn't show the whole picture though. Data is holding off on dumping for a few days. He will have a tremendous load when he does. We are ok though. Still out producing them :D

I think he is holding off till we take #5. Then have a massive dump, and take it back for a short while.

Yeah it'll put us back for 1 day. Maybe less. I'll say August 3rd.

I think that's a damned good idea. We don't wamt to take 5th to lose it again on the next update, I'm going to start to run my px box nonet - should have about an extra 20 x 99aa's to dump on the day we take 5th - if a few of us do this, we can make it convincing.

Oh, are we going to plan a time? Or just dump haphazardly like we did before?
I think as soon as we hit #5, everyone should dump.

Yup I comply, let's wait till' the 5th spot is gained than have a dump to secure it... it may push back the accession day... but then we'll leave them stuned in our wake.... that ough to be some afterburner grand day.. :evilgroin:

I've got less then half my firepower on hold. Also, everyone watch the stats. I think waiting till we hit #5 is good, cuz then there isn't any problems coordinating times.

Make sure you guys keep a few puters crunchin', don't nonet all of em. that way we still have people producing enough to get us to 5th, then we can dump to assure we hold it. I'm gonna nonet my 550mhz P!!! and me 450 AMD k6-2, but not my 1.33ghz or the 1ghz

I only nonet for about 3 days and then upload, so I'll let all the really heavy hitters save up for a sweet dump.
I have a 55aa on my PIII 650, so it runs through about 10-12 genes in a couple of days. I'll have to check what's on the 566 Celery.
My laptop has this ungodly 78aa on it, and it being a K6, it's taking awhile to run through that.

I'm not sure? We may be jumping the gun a little. Were still 23k back without what data does. You could be talking 2 weeks or more if we wait til we're #5. I think we should take a mini dump soon and pound it out for a few days before we go for the bigger one.

Well, I want to take an impressive dump. ;) I only have 3Gigs -nonet, which leaves 4.2Gigs online.
Wait a sec... That's 7.2Gigs. My total is 6.5Gigs. :D:D

well I still have 1.g ghz cruching , only noneting my 700mhz, just picked up a 99 actully, so in two weeks it should crank out almost 15x99's which would be a nice dump for one machine. I would like to just dump when we take 5th... seems like if we did it right around that take over , we could pull away from data even greater and all his noneting would have been a waste

If anyone is interested, he's now saying a 7K, 500 gene dump over 12-15hrs. Don't know if he is saying this for our benefit or not, but here's the link.

Has anybody noticed what is happening with the stats? First we were going to overtake Picard about 8/2 at about 660K, then 8/1 at 650K, then 7/31. . . . now it is down to 630K on 7/29.
From this, I would draw one conclusion. (Actually, I wish I had recorded the outputs on a daily basis so I could support this with hard numbers, not just logic based on the numbers I DO remember.)
Let's suppose that we have NOT changed our output significantly -- and that we are only nonetting what was previously excess capacity. (reasonable assumption ?). That means that Picard has about 4 days worth of differential production in nonet cache.
Preparing for a big dump really doesn't produce any extra wu, it just places a certain amount of current production aside. Picard has apparently moved the crossing date 4 days earlier by withholding 4 days worth of the difference between our productions. Then after they let us pass them, they can dump that 4 days worth of differential work to Stanford and put themselves ahead of us again for the same 4 days (where they would have been anyway). We still pass them (for real) about 8/1 or 8/2.
I think there's more truth in that explanation than figuring they are really demoralized and are actually no longer producing as much. {They are too good an opponent for me to buy that one.}
Personally, I'm going to follow siggy's recommendation. (Being a little guy, myself, it doesn't really matter much when I turn in my results.)

I think you're right, however, it would be nice to take 5th and secure it with a convincing lead. Personally, I'd rather take a day or two longer to get there, then dump a big one to make sure of it.
Chas
26th July 2001, 04:06
As an example, Data hasn't connected to get new work for days and will not be doing so until the weekend, at which point he will be returning in the region of 500 genes worth some 7000 units and this all came from downloading one unit for each machine (approximately 30 of them).
Latest news people from the Picard board this is what we are up against to get 5th position...........

I bet it causes a problem at Stanford when so many people -nonet and then do a bid dump.

Thanks guys, but that's really nothing compare to what you deserve... It's just a little quickie made in Excel.
I've been accumulating all stats data, every 3 hr since July 8. I didn't have much time since then to work on it since I'm on vacation and my wife make sure I don't have any spare time...
I should be back working on it soon, probably with the help of XCalibur...
