Sorry X... I have never read nor owned a Linux book.... Do you have a good technical bookstore nearby? If so, just browse for an hour and have a skim through a few. Failing that, here in Australia several magazine publishers have release mini-book/CD sets that are pretty good. Just enough Linux to get you started and they come with 1 or 2 distributions. Book & CD < A$20.... Good value.

Red hat distros come with a manual, either on the CD or in paper (gasp) Thats all i read. I ask danr stuff a lot, but I also figure things out without a book. It seems i remember more if I just do it myself, mess up and then fix it so it works.

Just got a great book yesterday (thanks Siggy)

Red Hat Linux 7.1 Bible
By Christopher Negus
ISBN 0-7645-4820-4
74.99 C$ (@ Camelot)

Red Hat 7.1 Included (3 CD)

Easy to read, "task oriented" style

It's installed and crunching Genome... There's still a lot to do in order to have a perfectly configured system, I'll be busy for the next couple months :D

Thats good mech, best way to learn - f%$k it up and fix it! But seriously, there is so much documentation in the Linux Documentation Project now, that all you really need is a small book covering the basics of Linux - filesystem, commands, structure etc and the rest is just getting your hands dirty using it. Whenever I venture into an area that is new for me, I go and grab the HOWTO document and generally have it sorted real quick.

Ok, most of the time I don't mess up..... I usually do read a howto or check a website etc.

I was tryin' to make the point that I can do without a book.......... Except I already know the basics (at least i think i do). i guess if you've never used linux, you'll need a hefty into :)

I've been playin' with linux since around when Redhat 5.2 came out and i was usin' freeBSD 3.2.2 (or something)

Your right. If you have never seen Linux or Unix before, there is alot to learn. I was fortunate that I grew up with Xenix and Unix so I was right at home with Linux.

How did you find BSD? I have never seen or used BSD before and are very curious. Several guys on the Linux NG's have made comments that get my interest. I like the sound of it, sounds like a very tightly controlled OS and very stable.

I bought it from cheapbytes.com a while ago. Back then Xfree was optional and I didn't have it. It feels like any other linux distor I guess. I haven't used since my first copy (and then I didn't use it much.) That FreeBSD was my trainin' wheels and i had no handlebars ;)

Glad you liked the book. I like it too......I am also looking for something to install it on.
Hehehe... I had something waiting for it...

My good ol PII-300 @ 450 with 256 Meg RAM, 30G HD, 3C905B, SBLive, my old 4x burner and some old ATI 8 Meg Rage Pro crap card...

On Win98, it was a real P.O.S.
On Linux, it's running great...

It was used by my kids as a spare machine so I had to tell them I would "improve" it... So far they seem to like it...
