After installing Gentoo on a few systems I have decided to bite the bullet and drop XP from my dually workstation and have a go at getting Gentoo 1.4 installed. This should be fun as I have quite a bit of hardware that will need to be set up (and probably lack the knowledge to do so...but hey, google is my friend :D ).
I am currently fighting with my Mylex AccelRAID170 SCSI RAID card, but things are progressing nicely. I bet my USB Wacom GFX tablet gives me some problems

Hang in there Phil. Your a brave soul and a pioneer. Besides, I need someone I can ask questions
when I get in a jam.

Well, KDE3.03 took ages to compile but I now have it up and running with no problems (also have the hardware accelerated Nvidia drivers working great).
This machine feels so much faster now. Everything has been compiled from scratch using GCC3.2 and Athlon XP optimisations and disk access is awesome using 2 Atlas 10K III's (RAID0). Now to get my Wacom and printer working.

Is Gentoo newbie-friendly? :)

OK Phil tell me WTH Gentoo is! Never heard of this one. Please leave the laughing out of the message. :) I'm blonde so I have an excuse. :)

Gentoo (www.gentoo.org) is a Linux distro with FreeBSD style ports system. Everything is compiled from scratch using your specific optimisations and you choose everything on your system. The base system is very small, then you add packages on top. For example, I wanted KDE3 so I typed:
emerge kde which downloaded kde and all of it's dependencies and compiled them from scratch and installed them on the system. It isn't exactly newbie friendly but the install docs are awesome!
