Ok, I just sold my crappy new XP1700+ AGNGA stepping, and have to grab a replacement tommorrow, what do you guys think? I want to run 200Mhz FSB and overclock somewhat too, my XMS3500 has been tested at 430Mhz, so should I grab a XP1800+ AGIOA or a new Thoroughbred XP1700+ ???

BTW, I can also get a really good deal on the AMD boxed XP2100+ at the moment (AUD199)....

What board are you runnning with it? Does it have a 1/6th pci divider?

It's the new Gigabyte GA-7VAXP KT400 mobo. With the FSB dip switch set to 166, the PCI bus is at 33Mhz... When the BIOS is then dialled up to 200, the PCI bus is at 40.

BTW, I located some local Thoroughbreds, here are my options:-

XP1800+ Palamino AUD 139
XP2200+ Thoroughbred AUD 309
XP2400+ Thoroughbred AUD 419
XP2600+ Thoroughbred AUD 499

I am reading a mixed bag of opinions over at amdmb.com

From what i've read just make sure you get a TBred "B" and not the "A". Much better performers... getting a good chip thou still seems to be a crap shoot... :(

The XP2700+s are available now too.

w00t, I just discovered (at amdmb.com) that the SW1 dip switch allows you to select a 1/6 divider for 200Mhz FSB, setting it to ON | ON... :)
SW1 100 133 166 200
1 ON OFF OFF ON
2 OFF OFF ON ON

Hey Dnar,

My understanding is the kt400 chipset doesn't have the provisions for a 1/6 divisor so I would be suprised it that is available but anything is possible. Also I have both a 1700+ AIRGA and a 1800+ AIUGA tbred and the later week 1800+ is currently running 1.95 mhz @ 1.85 volts watercooled on a KR7A 133r. The 1700+ would go about 75 mhz lower. Hope that helps..........goldie:rofl:

Ok, I picked up a Retail box 1700+ today for next to nothing, AUD 129. Stepping is:- AGOIA 0234 "9".

Now, the advise I was given at amdmb.com was crap, there is NO 1/6 divisor on my mobo (your right goldie) and the ON|ON 200Mhz FSB setting does not work...

The best I can manage, in one afternoon's 'clocking is 9.5x180 with aggressive memory settings, I beat the shit out of it too, had it running Windows (hehe) and covered half the HSF to heat her up for an hour, she ran hard at 60C for an hour and did not give one error at 1710Mhz, running 1.84Vcore.

I am dissapointed this motherboard wont run a 1/6 divisor, my PCI/IDE wont boot reliably over 184Mhz, even with a CPU divisor as low as 5x. It's weird, you can run the Memory at 400DDR when you have the 133FSB setting (async), but with 166FSB, memory drops to to 333DDR (sync).... I guess the new Tbred's wont run async memory, and this is why they did it...

I am off to hunt the known Universe for a hacked BIOS now... :)

BTW, using a volcano 7, my "old" XP1700+ at 1463Mhz/1.75V (non-overclocked  ) ran 100% load = 41C. Now overclocked to 1710Mhz, with +5% Vcore I am seeing 52C. Is that what you would expect to see for that kind of overclock/overvolt - approx 11C increase? Seams high.... Concerned maybe I didnt get the HSF sitting right, or the ASIII is not applied as well as the previous chip...

Cheers!

I was bored.

I removed the Volcano 7, and re-lapped the Heatsink... I am slack, I should have done this when I swapped CPU's, the ID marking of the original CPU where impregnated ont he heatsink. After lapping the heatsink, my temps now are 46C, a drop by 6C....

So the temps before/after overclocking are:-

XP1700+ 11x133 (1463) 1.75V = 41C
XP1700+ 9.5x180 (1710) 1.84V = 46C

Not bad, I am happy with that...

I do wonder though, how much better things would be if I lapped the CPU.... Why oh why do AMD mark the core?

Not bad :)

AMD mark the core because their CPU's are easily multiplier unlocked. Not marking the core with the chip speed etc would mean that anybody could claim that a cpu was of a higher speed just be changing the default multiplier on the CPU.

I ordered an Antec 380W twin-fan supply the other day, when that arrives I will try to overclock this puppy some more, but for the moment I am happy to run at 1710 and get a feel for stability...

I have this old IBM DeathStar that crapped out 2 months ago, it was my main Linux workstation drive. It just so happens that drive has a Win95 partition, that I setup just for overclocking tests, and guess what? That partition is fault free and usable, and it boots! LOL. I am using this Win95 drive for my tests, as its quick to boot, dosnt matter if if gets trashsed if things go really bad, and having stuff like Sandra is cool for benchmarking overclocking attempts... Another good thing, is that Windows craps out really quick if anything is unstable, or the CPU generates an exception, where as under Linux problems can be masked quite well, and IMHO thats not so good when you want to know when things are turning flakey...

It is fun to be back on the bleeding edge again, the last two months I have suffered an IBM death, rebuild using RedHat 8, had the replacement Maxtor drive die a month later, now playing with a lill' overclocking is fun :)

Sure, what I meant was - why not mark the chip elsewhere, but not on the core!

Any improvements in lapping the core? I would imagine it makes the CPU practicaly unsellable!

Oh, question, just how far should I be able to push this AGOIA 1700+ ??? I checked out the databases at a few overclocking sites, but I tend to not beleive everything I see....

This chip has dropped 2 degrees since I fired it up again, running 44C - I am thing MORE voltage MORE clock. :) :) :) :)

Takes me back to when I first joined ACHO the team, on Xcaliburs forums (RIP), someone said to me, greed is gooooooood. :)

Off to the drifge to grab anobber beer. :)

the way your typing is deteriorating - I'd say you don't need no stinkin' beer m8ee. ;) :D

No such thing as too much... beer or cpu power! Sounds good dnar, keep us posted... the AGOGA 1600+ i have here won't go past 1660mhz, and voltage dosen't make and difference! Interested to see how far you can push that chip. :)
