View Full Version : Of PIII's and Dead A/C's. . .

My AC died last night... It's 113deg F (45C) ambient in my machine room right now (74 deg F outside. . .). My air cooled dual is running 140 deg F (59.8C). I hope it survives my trip! I think I'll set it up to do an over-temp shutdown at 63C... Any thoughts?

I'm going to try putting a box fan on the side of the case Atleast get things down to closer to the ambient temp. . . (LOUD, though...)

Ever feel like you're just talking to yourself? [grin]

Now THAT's a fan!!!

Open all the windows in the lab, and turn on the 'whole house fan' (sounds like a jet engine is running upstairs. . .)

Put a 28" box fan up against the side of the case, and remove the other side (big Lian Li all-aluminum server case) - clear about 15" around it: Ambiant temperature 24 deg C - Each processor is running at 42deg C (107deg F) now...

Setting up the shutdown is a smart move, but it looks like you've got it under control. I had to add a couple of window fans on exaust to my home office (http://members.home.net/pelligrini/Home_office2.jpg) to get it comfortable. Water would be the way to go but rigging all 31 chips wouldn't be very cheap. Besides there's this saying; "anything that holds water, eventually won't" ;)

Glad to have you on board!

That's a scary situation Jodie! 45c ambient would be enough to fry all but one of my rigs! I've put my trust in an a/c unit... perhaps i should reconsider....
In the fall i'll setup a temp controlled window fan with a spring hinge cover to keep this oven cool.... :)

When I get back, I'm going to buy a couple of backup A/Cs and have fail-over on them. Another thing I never considered: California Rolling Blackouts. All the machines have about 15hrs of battery backup. The AC doesn't. Pretty silly, huh?

Ambiant temp in here this morning is now 21deg C... My machine is running at 31deg C. NICE! Nothing like a box fan and a cold room....

There's a cheaper way - you could move to England! For most of the year, my house is 21C with the heating on :)

Nice picture! I'll take some as soon as I get back to share, too.

My advice on the water side is to use nothing that's conductive. Pure distilled water could be dumped into your machine all day long without effect. I wash my machines down with a sprayer when they get dusty, using distilled...

By the by: I'm in awe! 75k WU. Wow!

31 chips? What all are you running? I'm up to three dual 1Ghz+, 2 single 1Ghz, 1 900s, 1 850s, 1 800s, 4 733s, 4 600s - 19chips... I have five more to format and bring online before it's time to go shopping... [grin]

Thanks for the welcome!

ROFL! I used to run my network up in Truckee, California. Coldest place in the US most winter days. Summer it doesn't get much over 30C... Problem is that you fingers freeze whilst typing if you actually LIVE up there... But then, that's what T-1's are for... [GRIN]

I didn't know distilled was non-conductive. Something new everyday ;) I couldn't even imagine plumbing all of my boxes, the cabeling is bad enough.

A lot of my machines are slugs.
There is a brief sysopsis in this thread (http://www.thegenomecollective.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=96&pagenumber=1)
There's also a few pore pictures here (http://www.thegenomecollective.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=106)

You've got some really cool toys. Do you have a wood/metal shop too?

She's right, pure water is non-conductive. Unfortunately, it only stays that way when completely sealed from the environment. As soon as it's exposed to anything pretty much, especially metals, ions become disolved in it and it turns into a pretty effective conductor. Even atmospheric CO2 disolved in it, will do the job. You certainly couldn't submerge your boxen in water and expect them to run for longer than 30 seconds :D

Ever seen a product called RMI25??? The "bees knees" for automotive cooling systems.

- Non glycol based
- lubricates hoses
- includes water wetter
- minimises steam formation
- holds scale in suspension
- non-corrosive etc etc

Depends upon how fast you pump it... [grin]

We ran-up some SGIs a few years ago, putting the water directly onto the cores... turns out you can get away with it... Although I don't recommend it unless it's OPM (Other People's Money)

There are other liquids that are MUCH less conductive...

Anyway, I have 20mins to go shower, get dressed, and get down to the airport. Another 20mins to preflight my plane and get into the air, if I'm going to make my meetings... back in a couple days!

Errr, that should be "more conductive to heat, less conductive to electricity." Or shall we say "more convective, less conductive" I have to be careful here, dot my 'T's, cross my eyes, errr, 'I's... :p :p :p :D

hehehhe, It regularly goes to 100F here, outside and inside. (40c) I don't have a sensor on my P!!! 500, but it doesn't stop runnin' with that big arse alpha on there. My 450 AMD k6-2 never goes over 110F with my magicall pegboard custom made case.

My 1ghz hits around 125F at most witht the sides off and a FOP32 (38 is too loud, but if it gets too hot, I switch fans)

1.3ghz bird is watercooled, never goes above 110F

If ya'll like graphs, i have temp graphs for the 1ghz and the 450. The 500 only has mobo temp, and its in the same enclosure as the 450.

Mmm, gaphs.......... Who wants graphs?!?!?!!? Matrix, you seen to like graphs.. Line type with 186 values with readings taken every 16 minutes. Graph shows 3 day trend

In the middle of posting a message to the board here last night, my WIC card in my router dies AGAIN... All night without Internet connectivity... That's the SIXTH one in four months... Sigh. (Ok, I'm done now... Now, where was I in the reply process ?)

Thats very unlike Cisco products do die... (IMHO). Looks like Cisco are going through tough financial times at the moment too, seen their share prices? Sounds like your router is starting to get on your wick Jodie...

Have I seen their share prices... Have *I* seen... :( :( :(

I don't even want to tell you how much (now) non-liquid capital I have into that company... Absolutely PERFECT chart from their IPO forward until now... Oh well, they'll come back. No where to go but up. Glad I'm an investor and not a trader, though. Whew, I'd be hating life. . . :( :( :(
