I've tracked down the infamous memory access violation bug,
and pending the success of my overnight tests, should have a new version out
tomorrow.

 :D :) :) :)

I wonder if we have to complete a protein or if we can update the client at the next 10%. (With a farm of very slow machines, this can take a while.)

I'm pretty sure it will still be at 100% of each sequence. That is about the only time the data can be saved.

Hurray on the new client part too. :D

Instead of releasing a new client so soon, it seems they should wait and just include it in the version that's to be released at the end of the month.

yeh, but other teams are howling mate. It seams a big issue to others, the whole stability thing. Personally, I have very little trouble.

Better to thoroughly test the fix by putting it out in the field.

I've only had an occasional problem, myself, but it is a shame to find a machine that quit genoming a day ago, so I agree with his choice. (Fixing it now would reduce my babysitting chores.)

My guess is that Stefan will have fixed the primary problem, but there's probably a minor bug or two hiding under that one and nobody will know it until he gets 0.99 out. Then he can release 1.00 at the end of the month with both a reliable compute engine and proxy support.

Even the numbering system works.

Two questions;
1) Will it have proxy/http support?
2) Will I be-able to run it as a “service” in W2K??

Whats this http support everyone is talking about? I ahve mine proxied ok.............. I was using Wingate or PPPShar to do it, now I have a cable modem router. PPPshar is free, and Wingate has cd crackers you can find very easily, and i think the personal edition is free.

Oh yeah, I forgot. It'd be especially useful if some of the more
sophisticated users out there can try running this version on any bad,
i.e. crashed, wu's that they might have lying around. Version 0.99 should
be able to resurrect them . . .

Thanks - Stefan

Just downloaded and installed in one machine. Have not really had very many problems.
If you want the direct link to the download page try this. (http://genomeathome.stanford.edu/clients.html)
In stead of going thru the login.

I spent a long time trying to get HTTPort to get past my corporate firewalls. No way. The "public" proxies weren't and my home machines do not have 24/7 access.

Many people in my office are running UD because it has built-i n HTTP. :(

Mech-

What is http support? How about 350+ PIII 933 running Win2K. I have complete control over these via Active Directory and Group Policy in a lab I work in. A little math and I'm a super cruncher....

I know alot of people will be frustrated with the process of beta testing a client or two. Please bare with us(and Steph & crew) as the process runs it's course. Remember, the reason we are all here is for: firstly THEM(at Stanford), and secondly OURSELVES(as the human race)... The client is ALMOST ready for release! (What do you think we've been doing these past months????) Please be patient as the team works out the kinks! A mature client is JUST around the corner! All of us will benefit! Please stay tuned... and KEEP CRUNCHING!!! :D WOOT!!:p

Just a snippet of info for the Linux users amoung you, I have found that you can install the 0.99 client, run it to setup the configuration, then stop a 0.98 client in progress and copy the current work unit into the 0.99 directory and resume.

On Windoze, I stopped a 0.98 client, installed on top of it (i.e. - same directory), and resumed the same sequence with the 0.99 client. Same thing isn't it?

I've even got a couple of partially completed (crashed) proteins that I can now resume. Too bad I cleared some of them.

At my office, most folks are given a Win98 machine which looks at the 'net through a firewall that allows acc to very limited ports. The browser gets through, but not most other software.

If the G@H client looks like a browser to the firewall, the machine can avoid sneakernet. That opens up a lot of machines. (Unfortunately a lot of TPS folks control a lot of those machines, so they'll probably pull FARTHER ahead, but it's all for the race . . . .

Just to satisfy the curious, I setup a drag race on a Tbird, using the 0.98 and 0.99 Linux clients, with the same 87aa unit.

The results: they both run at the same speed.

Well thank you for clearing that up. I was curious about that one. :p

Well I for one am not going to change versions if there is no benefit.
