While chatting with dnar last night the subject of Linux came up. I know that some of you may be surprised that a conversation involving everything from politics to the Americas Cup evolved into Linux but please bear with me for a second.:) dnar recommended Redhat 7.1 to me after telling him I was toying with the idea of running WinXP for sh*ts and grins. Now my question is what other programs do I need to make a fully functioning O/S complete with internet and Office capabilities? Anyone care to add their .02 cents and help a "Newbie"? :D

Well, you could allways download StarOffice (www.sun.com 90MB+) if you decide to run Linux. As far as compatibility goes, it can read/write ms word and exel docs with little problems. (along with a bunch of others.) You need a load of memory though, it takes up a lot when you start it up.

As far as other programs, any Linux distribution you choose comes with a bunch of programs. Netscape, Xmms (mp3 player), mail and news readers, the Gimp (image editor) ICQ clone, among others.

Stuff like cd burning and mp3 ripper programs are available but take a little to setup...:) not bad though.

Plus dnar posted some links for other programs under the 'poweruser network tools' thread.

Linux- You'll like it.

I'll be getting a Celery 533 system in next week and I'll venture out of microsoft waters with that. Gives me the weekend to try and find a decent copy of Redhat with all of the nice little programs that you guys have suggested. if I like it I might be inclined to put it on the DDR system that I'm finally going to assemble next week also.
