Anyone got such a setup? Somehow, my XP machine can't seem to "see" the rest of the network composed of 2k machines...? Can't ping either...? Any clues? TIA

You have to activate the network on the XP machine.
I am at work right now and running 2000 and not at my XP now but if I remember right it is in the control panel
open network....
Right click on the connection and activate.

I am running XP and 2K on my network and they work fine. Can you connect to another machine using it's IP address? In your XP browser, try:
//192.168.0.2/c$ Use your ip address of the 2k machine. If this works, then you need to enable netbios from the tcp/ip settings to allow the machines to "see" each other.

It's probably that stupid auto-config IP address. If it doesn't find a DHCP host, it gives itself an IP address that probably won't talk to any other machine on your LAN.
Somewhere there is a registry setting that leaves the address at 0.0.0.0 if it can't talk to anybody, which boots faster and is easier to correct if you find the problem and try to reconfigure TCP/IP. Anybody remember what it is?
