Watched a show the other night on brit's driving habits. (Hey, good comic relief. ;) ) Just two questions. Do they pay y'all for being tv stars courtesy of your cctv and police cams? And were any of you on it? :D

I found it a lot easier to drive in the States with your long wide roads, and a part of the road actually reserved for turning right.... something we just d'ont have the room for!

Alright, picked up a couple. Got a few other questions. (Probably think of some later also) What is that point thing. They kept talking about losing 3 to 6 points off the license? And what are those squiggly lines in the road? Drunk painters? :D They would make me dizzy running down it.

You can have i think 12 points on a licence and still drive, go over that and you're banned.

Each offence carries so many points - SP30 (going over 30mph in a 30 zone) carries 3pts. 4 x SP30's and you're on the limit, another and you get banned.

Some offences carry more points, doubling the speed limit is an automatic ban etc. Depends on the circumstances and the cop as to what you get charged with. Some places offer you a choice of an on the spot fine instaed of a court thing, dont argue, pay the fine and you get reduced points.

Ah, ok. The U.K. seems a little more leniant on tickets. (U.S. we want the money first time, second time, and then you start having to worry about your license.) Do the deductions stay with you forever? Or do they drop of after a year?

I believe ALL Americans should learn to drive in Germany. They don't mess around there. We have people who camp in the fast lane. Drag your hoopty ass Trabat into the passing lane on the Autobaun and you best have good life insurance. I love to drive the Autobaun!

Want to learn to drive where there are no rules? Italy wil do just fine... Next Paris...

Stop Lights...

In America...Green=Go Yellow=Speed Up Red=Maybe, Maybe Not

In Europe...Green=Go Yellow=Slow Down Red=Stop Yellow=Start Rolling Green=Hit It

The worst = Mexico... No more than 55mph during the day and don't bother at night.

I think they go after two years i have been lucky enough never to have lost any points on my licence, I must have been very lucky though people in London when possible still drive over the speed limit..... and the squigally lines, i take that you are referring to, are a warning of a Pedestrian crossing ,traffic lights, or a roundabout ahead.......

Yes Italians are maniacs on their roads, french are bloody dangerous too overtake on roundabouts. when i first went over to the states believed all the crap about how you stick to 55 on your freeways so i started along merrily 55 everything passing me both sides so soon learnt to speed up untill the cop cars are around!! oh and you speed spotter planes........

And two others, who ever hits their horn first at an intersection gets to go and anything you do as long as you hit the horn its fair warning.

Question about the pedestrian crossings. My next door neighbor visited England and said people seemed to speed up toward people not crossing on the crossways. (Get bonus points if you score. ;) )

Be glad you're not living in Canada, eh!
Here in Nova Scotia your first speeding offence not only gets you a $100+ fine and points on(off) your license, they also suspend your license for one week! You don't want to know what they do on the second offence...;)

Cross without a crosswalk and you're on your own! Move it or loose it! If they don't run accross i lay on the horn to help "motivate" them.... :D

You need to come back. Our speed limit is back up to 70. 75 in some states. The 55 law did not make it long. Too many people used to driving higher speeds. Also a little trip across Texas at 55 would take forever. On the interstates it used to be normal to see some one running well over 100 mph. It has slowed down some now. Most of the time if you just keep with a group or the average speed on a freeway you don't have any problems. Really if you drive 70 in the fast lane (Innner freeway lane) you will probably get passed and tick off everyone. Most of the time they seem to be leniant on speeding on the freeways and will at least cut some off. Long time ago I lucked out on one. Doing +120 on a motorcycle and it was a motorcycle cop what pulled me over. But he felt sorry for me. I had just driven thru a cloud of love bugs. And really looked bad.

That is tuff. Really here if you just get a lawyer you normally don't even see the bench. Just show up and listen that charges have been dropped. Been a long time since I've been to Canada. What kind of speed is on your freeways?

Most are 100kph... there are a couple at 110kph, like between Edmonton and Calgary. Typically on the 401 in Ontario, you won't get stopped unless you are doing 120kph+. The average speed is approaching 130kph for the last couple years though.

Rick_Deadly

Another little tidbit, on the 401 where the posted speed limit is 100kph, a ticket for 150kph is $495.00 ouch :(

I think it's 3 years. I got an SP30 about 10 years ago, cop hiding in a bush with a radar got me 45mph, crafty bugger :) ...thats it - been lucky since. On the motorways the limit is 70mph, though most counties will give a 10mph leeway. Even when driving at 80mph, you still get crazies tail-gateing you or whipping past at 100+. Damn, if only they could see what a 100mph RTA does to your face.

alright... this is my thread.

here in australia we get 12 points also. once you get that 12th point u lose your licence. u get each point lost, back after 3 years.

unfortunately for me i have already lost 8 of mine (yes im a bit of a lead foot) and have not sped since i lost my last one (dont like the idea of riding a bike).

i think our fines are as follows:
1-9 kms over the limit =AU$50 (had one of those)
10-14 kms over =AU$100 and 1 point (had one of those)
15-19 kms over =AU$150 and 2 points
20-24 kms over =AU$200 and 3 points (had one of those)
25-29 kms over =AU$250 and 4 points (had one of those also)
30+ i dont know (havent pushed it)

I think thats right shu, recently, they changed the fines/points so that you lost less points and copped a bigger fine..... Why??? They want to keep us on the roads, as it make more money that way!

My best effort??? First year of driving, 118kmh in a 70 zone..... No "P" plates shown either.... I coped:

- No "P" plates
- 48kmh over the posted limit
- 38kmh over the allowed 80 limit for "P" platers

Result back in 1981 was 12 demerits!!!!!! Off to a good start..... V8's do that.....

Down here in the Maritimes typically the Trans Canada Hwy has a limit of 110kph. All other major highways(100 class i think they call them) have a limit of 100kph. All other rural highways are 70kph unless otherwise posted. Mostly the cops leave you alone unless you're 15+ over the limit. There is one highway though where there is ZERO tolerance. That would be our deadliest hwy, the 101. There have been so many deaths on that road that they will stop anyone doing a fraction over the 100kph limit on the stretch that runs thru the Annapolis Valley. The people say that it's the road, i'm here to say that it's the drivers... i should know, i lived in the area for over a year! In all that time of having to pass hundreds of cars only ONE ever FAILED to speed up! Gave me quite a shock! OMG! What, no pedal-down-make-me-speed-up-to-140kph-just-so-i-can-get-past-your-sorry-ass??? I also had one near miss head-on with a minivan who forgot which side of the road he belonged on.... bugger came right for me! Probably dropped his smoke or something....good thing my car likes the gravel!

Individual cities or states may have different fines but these are the local ones.
At 10 mph over us$120 add $25 if a school zone add $5 for every mph over that 10.
Some of our big hits are no insurance $310.
Failure to obey a police officer $254.
Littering $300.
Public intoxication $300

Ours like to hide on the backside of an overpass. That way when someone comes over it they slam on the brake and cause a pile up. I had not watched the show before the other nite, but decided to watch it again. (Allistair Stewart sounds like an twit. Or a salesman for the camera companies.) They made it sound like a major no-no to pass someone who is in the fast lane by going over to the slower lane.

Thats right, you only overtake on the right hand side on a motorway, there are three lanes

The left lane for lorries slow moving vehicles and leaving the motorway, middle lane overtaking slow moving vehicles ,

Outside lane overtaking till clear then move over, of course this is mostly abused ,by the flash bastards with the company car ...staying in the fast lane, or the doddery old twit ,who manages to get enough speed up to get into the middle lane, then stays there for the next twenty miles.......

Y'all must get some major jams just because one person is slow. Does that rule apply on 3,4,or etc lane highways?

Saw "Oh, the humanity" some kids were going 40 mph on mopeds. I believe in the Netherlands though. Watching that show kind of reminds me of the Rockdale newspaper. Billy Bob Jo Bob got drunk last nite in his front yard and was picked up for Public Intoxication. Late breaking news....... Henry (the "wink") Cramer was spotted and ticketed doing 45 mph in a 35 mph zone. More to follow. :D

We have sycronized driving. You'll have three of them side by side driving down the road. Our lowest allowable speed on the freeways is 45 mph. But you would be a fool to get on one driving that slow. Our semis normally have to go 5 mph under the normal speed limit but will stay in the fast lane, because the are big. Now get anywhere near downtown during rush hour and all lanes are going stop to 30 mph

We get jams more often when you see idiots with no lane discipline. Like Chas said, drive on the left wherever possible. For the most part, people observe this, you'll get smacked pretty heavily by a cop for undertaking.

We also have some options for getting out of a ticket. (Can only use this once a year.) One is taking defensive driving class, you also get a cut on your insurance. Some cities allow a nolo contendre plea and it will be dismissed if you don't get another in their city limits for a year.
