Ok, the genome bug had bitten real bad. Joking with phil the other day, we spoke of setting up a dedicated Linux cluster..... Well, I have done the math, working along the lines of Pellegrini special, I think I can afford to splash out on 6 Duron setup. The plan is:
Cheapest all-in-one mobo
Duron 800 (O/C to 1Ghz)
64Mb SDRAM PC133
Cheapo PSU
Home made enclosure
2nd hand $20 harddisk
Cheepo $15 NIC
Minimal Linux installation
VNC
I figure I can add 6Ghz for around Just on A$2000.
Mad ? Yup. :snicker snicker:

May prove a stupid question, but couldn't you cheap out the RAM a bit too? I mean go with 32MB 100FSB rated? Then when OCing just raise the CAS to 3 as you bump the BUS speeds?
I know this wouldn't save much on cost, but it would save a bit. So what obvious thing am I missing here?

Cheap out the RAM???? I just checked my buying price on SDRAM..... heck! I'll go for 128MB PC133 thanx at A$38 a module!!!!
Scratch the 800 Duron.... 750 Duron is %35 cheaper.....
But wait, theres more.... For an additional A$150 per system, I can make those rigs Tbird 1Ghz @ 1.4Ghz......
A$2000 = 6Ghz of Duron
A$2900 = 8.4Ghz of Athlon
I think the Duron is the way to go, requires less attention to cooling, PSU....
Now, I just have to convince Erin Doors.

DOH!!! Good point. I can't get it in my head just how CHEAP memory is right now. Probably worth having a few good sticks on hand anyway. :p

How about modding some of those cheap $29 filing cabinets?
They should be able to hold at least four boards a piece with drives and PS's.

Yoinkers! I wish I had cash to do that. Stuff is chep right now................. I don't even put my G@H machines in metal cases, I've got 2 and soon to be 3 in my magical pegboard case (noone has ever wondered what it looks like). My 1.4 and 1ghz are in cases because they are used for other things aswell as G@H (but G@H runs 24/7 on them)

We keep talking about CPUs, what about motherboards?
What is the best motherboard for the price for an Athlon?
Gee, this sounds like it should be in the Hardware message area?

pcchips 810 is a pretty good bet. No overclocking but has LAN, modem, audio, video all built in for under £65 in the UK

Never heard of pcchips. Where can ya get them and how much are they? I like the fact that it has video and lan already on it. Anyone know of any other boards that have those and you can also OC?

No idea where you can get them I'm afraid. Tried cnet and shopper.com
Do not know of any board which has inbuilt 10/100 and video with good O/C'ing. I'd certainly buy them.
