First of all i'd like to say this is all phil's fault... ;) :D
Knoppix is a woot! But there are some glitches... i can't use it on my main sys... for some reason it can't configure my old ethernet card properly. Maybe it's because it's using language my isp finds offensive? Anyway, one of the perks is that it runs in ramdrive, but you can specify a swap partition if you need to. When i ran it on my main sys it grabbed 408004k of ram! Cool! But i couldn't connect to the net and the sound wouldn't initialize. *sigh* Off to the laptop! Much to my surprise, everything works! And it runs faster off the cdrom than mandrake 9 does off the HD! WOOT! This is very cool! I'll definately be keeping an eye on this distro... :)

Glad you like it zhot....it is a pretty cool distro based on Debian. It works well with the machines at work and is ideal for showing Windows users what linux is in minutes without a full install. BTW, it worked perfectly on my dually setting up sound, gfx and even the SMP kernel .

Oh yeah, it is perfect as a suicide OS when testing for a stable overclock. Fire it up, d/l DF and let it run.....better still, set up a server with an NFS share that contains the DF client. Connect to it from the Knoppix machine and set it running. If the machine is not stable, you won't have to keep downloading the DF client, just reconnect to the NFS share and try again.
Hmmm, this could be a good way of setting up HDless nodes?

Thinking a little bit more on this and you have the ability to customize the CD to your needs. Just set it up without the gui and all the other stuff and have it automatically connect to the NFS server and start the DF client. Each node will need it's own CD and custom mount point on the server but this is an easy way to setup a HD, keyboard, mouseless node. When you want to stop the client, you just remove the .lock file from the server.

OMG! It doesn't support DLink's 530TX nic.... geeze  It supports the usb nic fine but not the 530TX??? ARGH! I'm going to need a customized CD....

Okay...D/L'ed and burned...I'll be restarting now to try it out...wish me luck. ;)
I'll give you a first hand account of how easy it is for someone who's never ran linux before. ;)

LOL@ phil! Hint for Louis... F2! ;)

Hey! I don't appreciate that Phill! ;)
Yeah..I saw the F2 thing...not that I understood what it brought me to...But, I found the F1 thingy to go back to the main screen. I decided just to press enter, and it went to this. It stayed at this. F2 didn't do anything. In fact...nothing did anything. ;) I waited for 6 min...and here I am again.
A little help?

PS: give my no-ip client a min or so to catch up with my web site...;)

When you hit F2 at the prompt, it gives you command line switches you can add to customize the os. For example, on my laptop i type "knoppix lang=us screen=800x600 xvrefresh=60" because of the limitaions of the lcd display. The config seems to default to 1024x768 screen size.... Try 'er again Louis!

but...it's still just sits by this command line prompt. I know I'm slow...but bear with me....what are some commands so I can get to a gui...if knoppix has one....
You can even see my vain attempts at the bottom of the pic to get past this part. ;)

It's waiting for you to type "knoppix" instead of the usual "linux". Lets say you want knoppix to startup in english... type "knoppix lang=us" at the command prompt and hit enter. When you hit F2(when you're sitting at the command prompt) it gives switches you can use at startup. The display seems to default to 1024x768, so if your monitor can handle that resolution there's no need to mess with it. The other languages are there too, as knoppix defaults to German IIRC. If you need to use more than one switch, seperate them with a space like i did for my laptop.
P.S. - Don't use quotes when you type "knoppix lang=us"... but you knew that, right? ;) :D

Oops! My bad! :o Knoppix does indeed support DLink's 530TX... seems the card in the BP6 needed to be reseated... Posting from the K7D... picked up the onboard sound and radeon 7000 just fine. :)

Oh...so Knoppix is the magic word. ;) I had tried just about everything but that. ;) Will try and see on my next reboot. I won't say when...so no one changes things while I'm gone. :p

Louis, we only need seconds to rearrage the furniture in here (ask X-Calibur). If fact, read about it here:

Dmaned you Phill. :D
Okay...here's the dillio...
Autodetect seems to hang
check bios
Check for what? I don't have an "enable linux" option in my bios. :D
I knew I'd screw this up.... :banghead:

Hmmmm... have you disabled any hardware through the bios?

:banghead: I knew I should have never flassed my bios...that option isn't in my update. :D
Nope, I even tried changing options in my bios. I even did the unthinkable, and dropped my cpu settings back to factory default!
But, still nothing. I'm going to try it without my raid card...that's the only hardware I can think of that would cause problems.

From the FAQ:
Q: Auto configuration doesn't work on my computer, or the computer hangs
at boot. What should I do?
A: It might work if portions of the auto configuration are skipped. This
can be specified with "knoppix noscsi" or "knoppix nopcmcia".

Hmm...I'll try that the next time I re-start. I was thinking it was my raid controller card

Louis did u get Knoppix working ?
Louis_Berding2002
15th February 2003, 12:31
Nope...still hang on auto detect. I get it some where if I choose not to detect anything. But, beyond that, it sucks without it loading anything. It wasn't my RAID controller either. Something else (not my LAN card either) is causing the loading of knoppix to roll over and die.
I have absolut zero probs with WinXP...So, I'm still not sold on Linux at all. My XP can stay running for four days (seems to be max), and rarely ever crashes. (not even with OC'ing my CPU and vid card) Add, to that the simple fact XP has drivers in it for all of my hardware...I have no intrest in Linux at all yet. It's to the point, I'm going to still load WinXP for my dually (maybe Win2K).

I DL'ed Knoppix to see if it would run on my system and if it really is faster than Mandrake. I first tried it on my old A7V133 board. T'bird 1400@1575. Sample size was about 5000 Structures.
Knoppix Linux
------------------------------------------------------------
Structures Per Second: 2.41
Structures Per Minute: 144.72
Structures Per Hour: 8683.07
Structures Per Day: 208393.68
------------------------------------------------------------
Mandrake Linux 9.0
------------------------------------------------------------
Sample Size: 5000 structures over 2306 seconds.
Structures Per Second: 2.17
Structures Per Minute: 130.10
Structures Per Hour: 7805.72
Structures Per Day: 187337.28
------------------------------------------------------------
Advantage: Knoppix Linux, 21056.4 Structs Per Day
Then I thought I would try Knoppix on my dualie. Its a MSI K7D Master with a pair of AthlonMP 2100+, slightly overclocked. Both cpus were very close so I just used the data from the fastest one.
Knoppix Linux
------------------------------------------------------------
Structures Per Second: 2.76
Structures Per Minute: 165.47
Structures Per Hour: 9928.30
Structures Per Day: 238279.20
WinXP Pro
------------------------------------------------------------
Structures Per Second: 2.40
Structures Per Minute: 143.9
Structures Per Hour: 8636
Structures Per Day: 207257
------------------------------------------------------------
Advantage: Knoppix Linux, 62044 Structs Per Day(for two cpus)
Of course, these are just casual observations. Your mileage may vary. Knoppix is as close to instant Linux as it gets and pretty snappy too. If it works on your hardware, give it a try.

... or FAH. As far as I have read FAH runs slower on Linux
