View Full Version : Fan- sucking or blowing

On one of my comps I have a Pal6035 HS with a delta fan. Is it better to have the fan blowing directly onto the HS or sucking heat off of the HS? I have another Delta fan (Thanks to Dave:) ) blowing cool air over the Delta fan that is blowing directly onto the HS.

Fans should suck when used with Alpha's and blow on everything else.

Why not try both ways and see which works best?

I have read posts on the NG's saying it can work best either way, just try both and see.

I have not yet tried "sucking". I would imagine there to be more turbulance and hence less air flow, around the intake to the heatsink when sucking....

Like Phil says, but to add, i think a lot depends on the airflow charicteristics through your case. Also cable management etc. It all has a pert to play. On the PEP66 and PAL6035 that I own, they usually work best in "suck" mode, though it can vary. If you're using a fandapter though, allways to suck ;)

Hi Medic,
I have 1x 120mm fan blowing onto my 2 Swiftech MC370-0A's that way it also blows onto my clock IC & others so not just keeping the CPU cool but the MB & IC’s as-well – so far so good :D:D

I go by the idea that if it is shrouded suck and if its not blow

Always blow on the heatsink. The heat disapation is much greater. That being said it's always better to have as many fans as possible pulling the air out of the case and get all those wires and ribbons out of the way of the fan and bundled up.

I have a HD fan. That is making quite a racket. I think there is no such thing as too many fans. Any suggestions on were to get a replacement? Or should I just pull it out and trash it?

Well sig, if your HD is not squeezed up against other HD's, and your case ventillation is adequate, then why use a HD fan???

Option 2: Bye earmuffs.

Option 3: Turn up the stereo

Maybe I should look at the case ventilation. It is running a bit warm. I do have 2 HDs right now. But once a get another case, I will pull it out to build another machine. I have a board sitting around collecting dust.

I am a fan of...ops maybe I misread the question....

..really.. I have a couple of supermicro 760/750 style cases with vents near the 5.25 racks ( vents on either side )..and nothing to speak of mounted there. Plugged those with some tape on the inside and the whole system dropped 5 degrees. Having extra fans is nice but having airflow across the heat producing stuff is even better.

I've been thinking of dropping the 3 80mm fans in the front for one 120 with a v-shaped nozzle to funnel the air right down to the front edge ( maybe the whole edge ) of the system board. ie a square box 3/4" by 10" to the 120mm.

I have a webpage that I bookmarked sometime back that explained how inaccurate motherboard readings are. Siggy, our board seems to be around 10c higher than the actual temp. As for a heatsink/fan, I love my Swiftech, but I should have gotten the Delta fan instead of the pabst. I whole heartily recommend the Antec sx1030 server case. I have yet to see a case built better. Fong Kai's are nice cases also, but I'm sticking with Antec. I'll post the before mentioned link here tonight. Siggy, what are you doing with your celeron 366@550? Sniper has some spare pc's at the house. Probably enough to get it up and running. I'll have a cel400@450 and a PIII 500@620 up by the end of the week.

My 366@550 is in search of a case. Sniper says he does not have one it will go into.

Who says you have to have a case? ;)
I used to have 6 boards sitting in some shelves, 'till I made some Oak plywood boxes.

Personally, I like a fan that can suck the chrome off a bumper hitch.

Hey Dave-

Thanks for the fans. Those were some screaming little bastards. My wife HAD a real fit. They got jerked.... waiting for me to finish my garage server closet. Out there they can scream away in peace!
