I have and old P200mmx with RedHat 7.1 installed, it is fully updated but I have a problem with it, It freezes the PC when I am in the Gnome GUI, It kan take 5 min, or maybe a bit longer but it will always freeze. and the HDD runs amok I can use the mouse but I can only move it around the screen, thats all , and I cant Ctrl+Alt+Del, because the keyboard is disconnected at the same time that is freezes....I cant even make the Caps Lock lamp light up or the Num Lock....I have to make a hard reset and reboot, to kill it...:(
So now I have installed BeOS Pro. And it rocks :) Now there isent any problems........Your thoughts?
The only problem now is that I need a Genome@home client for BeOS.....Buhuuu!!!!
Have any of you ever tried BeOS?
Hope I am making sense.....I am not very good at spelling or gramma as you can see.....

If you check the XFree logfile: /var/log/XFree86.0.log you might have found out what the problem was...

No, but insn't BeOS just another software layer ontop of Windows???? If so, then it MUST suck! ;) ;) ;)

No BeOS is its own, I has its own kenel and all, even its own file system on its own patition......It has true multi processer support to, with that I mean that it is using the multi CPU system as one big proccesser, it does not do like win2000 pro divide the one task for one processer and a nother task for the other.......And it does not build on old technologi like Linux.....and windows....I am running BeOS pro, the free BeOS is not running from windows either, you can just chose from within windows to boot with BeOS, it is true that the free BeOS does not have its own partition though it is running from a 512mb file on the normal windows partition.........
And the remark that BeOS suck.....That I dont get.......It has never crashed or misbehaved in anyway.....I have used it on 3 computers without any problems....
But it does not run on every system out there because it does as of yet not have the best driver support....
Check it out, www.be.com there you can find the free personal edition....

Sorry, I did not really mean that about BeOS... It was a joke poked at Windows... From what I have read, application availability is still quite small, is this true?

Correct...that's why it sux. Betamax was far superior to VHS, but had no support...hence it sux.

hehe, I would agree with you that BeOS must suck if it was running ontop of windows, but luckely that is not the case :)
Yes it is true that there is as of yet a limited application availability, but if you know where to look there is actualy quite alot of tools already out there......there is already an office pakage made by Globe. Compleate with Spreedsheet, word processer, database program and even an image program if I remember correctly...you could try checking www.bebits.com for example, they have a lot of programs for BeOS.......And even some big name games are being made for BeOS neverwinter nights is one of them, and I have read that Unreal tounament is also waiting in the shadows....
I like BeOS very much, probely because I am to dumb for Linux....
And after what my limited knowlegde of Linux can tell me it seems that many of the commands and the file strukture is very alike.....Try it out but remember to check the compatibility list with you system, (I dont think that I needed to mention that to you dnar but others will probely read this post too):D

True, an OS without support is nothing, but how much support did Linux have from the start? I could imagine that it was only a few devoted followers, and how old is Linux? BeOS has not been around for very long, give it time and hopefully it will grow :)
And a quote from Be."Become friends with your PC again".....:D

BeOS has no future. Right now they are trying to get support fromm ANYBODY. CHeck arstechica for their BeOS vs QNX article. BeOS can't survive by not having any software or support. You originally had to pay or it too.
Linux is different. It has many sites devoted to linux support. ANd there are other companies that sell it, or allow you to get it for free.
Their is no Linux Corporation. There are many companies that sell (or give out) their own customized version of linux.
Thats where BEos has a problem, the company management is too much like that of Microsofts.
Is BeOS under the GNU? Is it open source? Lst time I checked, there was little GNU software for it.
I have used it, its a dandy os, but I can't see where its future lies. Does have a real advantage over windows other than its free, and thats if you want to download it and relearn a bunch of stuff. You would need Linux or Windows to get it and install it then.
Linux has uses, servers, graphic manipulation, workstation, embedded use, etc
i see BeOS has multimedia as its main use. Why an OS just for multimedia?

I have just read the article that you talked about, it is a good article....I agree that Be has problems at the moment, and that there future is probebly laying in the hands of there BeAI.........But as they say in the article BeOS has a big community behind it. As for the GNU part of BeOS, it is true that BeOS is not under the GNU.....Linux has many versions and is free, but it does not make it easier for the commen person to use it, BeOS is in my opnium very user friendly, and it is very stable. And your remark that Be is much like Microsoft, that I cant ague againt but I would say that I like Be better because they make a very good and stable OS unlike Microsoft!:D
And yes they are calling the BeOS a multimedia OS, but that does not mean that that is all it is.....
And BeOS compared to Linux, I would say that BeOS is much easier to use and maintain.....That is my expirience anyway......
I could not help but smile alittle when I saw this at the end of the article:
"Be's users are the types of people who ten years ago would be using an Amiga."......That is so true!!! I love the Amiga:)

You say that BeOS sux, what is the problem with it? beside it does not yet have as big a developer community as Linux or windows.....Every OS have to start somewhere...

Ahem cough cough beos sux cough xcough
paying baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad. I haven't bought a legal copy of Windows since 3.1 and the 95 upgrade, that came with my puter. So i never really bought a boxed copy either.
Youc an use CD keys from different MS productucts on other Ms products :D Not that I would do such a thing, its much easier to have everycopy of Win98 have the same cd key.
Looks like I'll never get WinXP, and i don't want somethin slower! I want faster OSes. WTF is Micro$oft thinkng?

Do you mean that WinXP is slow?
Never heard that it was slow.. but then again if one compares it to Linux or BeOS I do think that is the case :)
Woot! just heard a rumor that BeOS R6 may be just around the corner! Hope it is true, I would buy it without blinking!......:D

I don't know if the release version of XP is slow, but the almost-release-beta sure was, compared to win2k and 98.
Does BEOS actually run G@H? I don't know what BeOS is compatble with :( I'm thinking it might, because deep down beos has a linux type software layer, but I don't know if thats enough.
