Finally got around to messing with the scripts you sent me. Work like a charm, after a few modifications:). I had to remove the $%#$(%&* degree symbol again from the log file. 'Cause my $#%@$&* tic-a-stat still doesn't want to display it, and will freak out if I even try. Other than that very cool! Thanks!!!!!!!!!
Oh, and I just enabled the max temp shutdown thing, very handy. What do you think about this though, instead of shutting down right away do a /sbin/shutdown -t 20 ? That way if you are right in the middle of something you would have 20 seconds to save whatever you are doing and then exit yourself. Maybe 20 seconds is too long, mabe 10 or 15 sec would be enough. I think if you have a term window open (which I usually do) it would pop to the front whenever shutdown was issued so you would be able to see it happening. Just a thought.
Anyways, thanks again.

The scripts are for logging output from lm_sensors. They came from dnar originally but I'm sure he is willing to share. If he doesn't mind I'll forward them to you and help you set them up. It's pretty cool the one that logs temps just runs from your crontab and updates every minute, and checks your cpu temp to see if it is over the limit you set. If it is, it shuts down your computer. Nice for us overclockers. :) or anyone for that matter. But then you can use an applet in gnome (tic-a-stat) to monitor your logs so it displays on your taskbar.
I'll post a screenshot later.

I've seen it. Dnar pointed m to Gkrellm, which is great, but I want the shutdown feature.
Is it all that hard to se tup?
and I hope it doesn't need gnuplot, the hardest program I ever attempted to compile
"Edit the term.h file to match your config"
k
make gnuplot
file /root/gnuplot/term.h is corrupt
make error 1
argh!

Ok, the shutdown should be issued immediately..... As the cron job is executed once per minute, imagine this scenario:
- Fan fails... CPU temp rises sharply
- Alarm limit reached, shutdown activated
- Approx 60 seconds later the system is down
Now, I have checked this by removing the PCU fan power, CPU temps rise so sharply (running G@H) that the 1 minute cron task could see the over temp condition well above the configured alarm point.
Once an overtemp is detected, the system must be shutdown immediately, sure you may loose work, but any delay will result in loss of CPU and work.....
Yes, feel free to distribute my scripts among the team, if your using gkrelm, I can mod to just provide overtemp shutdown, no probs.

But would tick-a-stats be easier on the cpu cycles? If not, i would liketo use gkrellm

Arrrgh, X just crashed on me and I have to start this reply all over again........ Oh well at least I didn't have to reboot! :)
Anyways, I have tried all different types of fonts (cause that is what I thought at the begining too) but nothing seems to work. I even have the Gnome weather applet on my taskbar an it's showing a degree symbol. GO figure.
To answer your question, I am using the Default Gnome theme, with Utiopia-Bold-14 font. (For now)
What are you using for theme and font?

Nice one, glad to see you have maintained the version history :) Now mechCD, to use this script you must execute as a root cron task.

dnar, I sent Mech some pretty detailed instructions in the email and I haven't heard from him yet for help, so I am guessing that is a good sign. :) As for the script, I haven't ever contributed to open source projects :) ... I need to read more on the policys and stuff. I guess one thing is to send revisions to the maintainer of the project, eh? ;)
Mech, were you able to get the script running?
later...
