Dude, that liek cheating.

Running 60 comps that aren't yours.................

I could see running 10 of em at werk or at school, or 60 at a SCHOOL.... but not at work...................

It it were a school, then it would be being used for proper uses (medical science, schools participate)

well.. we had a problem with the vendor we got the zip disks from... didn't get here until 3 days ago... i was hopin' to have these guys up and -nonetting (the t-birdss were, but the forces that be obviously moved them to diff. departments).... my estimations for 9 weeks were closing in on ~300k WU's... i was hoping to make the [S]oft|Dump look like a little squeakin' turd :p

actually, now that i think of it... if i nonet these guys for a week, i'll crush the [S]oft|Dump.... something to think about ;)

Let's not go and get our panties in a bunch. Just think about all the work involved in trying to maintain 60+ genome clients. Are they all together or spread out? Is he going to set them up to -nonet and then dump all at once taking hours and hours of school bandwidth. How will he deal with crashing clients? How will he monitor all the machines to check for dead clients? He will somehow squeeze all this "extra" time in to do all of this and crush us? It is much easier said than done.

I have access to a farm 5 times larger than this new "threat". My conculsion was to run the Genome client as a scheduled service after hours so as not to impare user experience. All of these clients would be staggered in groups so as not to suck up bandwidth all at the same time. These clients would crunch for weeks and weeks without intervention. Clients may be dead for weeks at a stretch. It is not a simple thing to accomplish.

He can simply load an image, but in order to avoid dups, he must touch every machine to grab a a new id.dat. How long will that take? So you see there are many obsticles to running a huge farm. I wish him luck... as he will need it and very soon.

I purpose all active members of TGC try and add one machine to their personal farms by the end of the year.

Kind of what I was thinking too Will, that's why I asked when we could expect to see the farm come online. Having the farm available to you is one thing, translating that ino WU is another. If it takes longer than 5 weeks, it'll likely be too little too late anyway.

Be interesting to see how it pans out.

I know your are SUPPOSED to do this. Has anybody got any hard facts about what happens if you don't?

At times I've duplicated a complete directory (e.g.-after a crash) and later reinstalled it and completed the unit. The same id.dat machine was actually still processing -- and it apparently worked.

My theory is that the machine id does support the website graph of number of machines per user (etc.) and may someday be used as an anti-cheating defense, but I don't think it has been activated yet.

Does anybody know?

I do know that I can collect results from a farm and upload them from a single id.dat machine (provided there aren't duplicate random numbers.) I can also take the xxx.2 files and move them to a different machine.

All my machines do have different id.dat's assigned, but I'm not convinced that it really matters.

If we see 60 come online, I'll immediately counter it with sixty-five identical machines. P3-1Gigs are cheap. A thousand would be tough, but 60? As soon as my server-room/garage renovation is done (adding another 95K-BTU of cooling), I'll just add half a dozen racks and 35 SuperMicro Dual 1.13's, that easy. It's only about $25,000 worth of hardware.

I crunch for science, but let's be honest, the race keeps me sharp. And I'm not much accustomed to losing... It's similar to racing (My exhusband was a race car driver, and at one point when he couldn't re-up his sponser, I just bought the team.) the answer when some newbie says "how fast can I really go?" "Racing is a gold-card sport. Speed=Money, how fast do you WANT to go?"...

---

I'd run linux on the machines and a cron script to check the client exists every 10 mins. If it doesn't, re-exe it with a -clear... Actually, that's what I do now across my farm...

Geez, Jodi... It's only $25,000 in hardware! Maybe you could send a few of those CPU and parts my way. I have to beg and plead with the spouse for anything new, especially computer related gear. Generally she gives in "I guess we could take the money out of the kids' college fund." I reply, "Okay great, I'll go order it right now!"

I'm sure someone will here shortly... actually, the PC class machines aren't that bad. The big Sun's and the Vaxxen are what do me in. Actually, they're nothing compared to the cooling costs... I get hit with rolling blackouts (if my neighbors figure out that I'm the reason this grid is hating life, I'm in trouble, so SHHHH! ) every week, but I have enough battery power to keep everything up for half an hour which is time enough for the generator to kick over and then I have 21 days of unattended power backup for the whole house and my three closest neighbors (the ones that can hear the generator, I know where my bread is buttered) (Navy surplus diesel) Actually, the funny thing is that every time they blackout my grid, then end up PAYING me because of the excess power I put back into the grid.

But I'm sure the power police will find me eventually... The couple hundred amp circuit has GOT to be a clue... And I'll need another 260amp circuit for the new AC...

And sorry, but Medic got in in front of you! He's first on the list for retired processors... First one goes out tomorrow... :D

It's amazing how you can pick up 800+mhz machines by the pallet load for a hundred dollars or less a piece...

I bought an RS-6000, nicely configured, for $400 last week. Dusted it off, took it to one of my suppliers in the back of the truck, sold it for $50,000. 1hr of work... Not a bad return...;)

Doesn't matter if everything else in that box is 486 class stuff.;)

Great deal you closed there. Kudos!

Seriously, here in the Netherlands, 2nd hand 800+MHz machines have a lot more value. You are looking at at least $300 here, probably more.
Things might change though as hardware prices in general are expected to drop worldwide I read.

Good idea.

I've already got a box of discards that I was about to send to a member of ANOTHER TEAM because he said he'd build them into "gnobbits" and I figured (A) it's all for the science, and (B) for the price of the electricity in CA, I could spend the same money on a good machine and get more WUs, and (C) the total MHz for his team wouldn't make a difference vs. our team stats.

Somebody can have a number of (probably good) 486 mobos if they'll pay shipping. Some with RAM, some with cache, etc. (He's going to college, and the shipping was more than he decided he had.)

jodie- all I'm going to to say is WoW!!!!! Next time I'm in Cali I'll be sure to stop by and say Hi and maybe sneak a peak at the farm.

On a side note - what the heck is a donut puncher?

Somebody needs to come up with a creative insult for the OCN

The only insult I can think of wouldn't fit on this board. Guess I'll have to post it on their board.
