bought a 30 gig maxtor today, set it up as the slave....... didn't boot. set it as master, didn't boot. tried the first two things about 3 times, rechecked jumpers, no luck. that damn boot disk didn't help either. anyway is there something special that i have to do for this bitch to work? LOL. I've having a hell of a time with computers this week!

Is it recognized in the bios?

I had a Maxtor I had to send back. It would not do anything.

I hope you get it working... I use that very drive in my main machine, and it's been great for the past year. You might have to be more specific than "Doesn't boot" though. I'm sorry about the 'duh' factor of some of the following suggestions. ;)

Does it spin up? Does it make chattering or seeking noises? Can the BIOS auto-detect it? Will it work without any other drives on the cable? Cables correct and non-defective? Does Matrox's own 'Powermax' installation and diagnostic software recognize it? Can you fdisk/format it?

Like Chris said check the stupid things like power (try a different one), ata cable etc. Also see if it is getting detected by the bios. If none of those suggestions help I would probably just send it back and get a new one.

if the BIOS detects it and it won't boot, you need to set a partition as "active" using dos fdisk, or similar utility
