So Friday night comes and I remote conenct to start up all the lovely P4s sitting in my development project office for the weekend. All goes well except that I have to do a remote shutdown on one machine that seemed to have some rogue processes.
Monday morning and I have an angry e-mail from my boss who was using the machine I re-booted! Seemed my remote shutdown told him who was doing it and then he checked what was going on and found the DF in the background.
Anyways, I have de-installed all traces of DF from 54.6 GHz of computers this morning and they will remain unborged

Damn man.....
You in deep shit or what? Fancy a stroll down the pub with me?

Not in deep shit but I'm glad I wasn't there at the time judging from the tone of his e-mail to me. He seems to have cooled down today.

Ouch Mike, Well it's good he didn't do anything drastic like fire you or have you arrested and fined for some ridiculous amount of money for bandwidth usage.

He's not really my boss. I work in a Matrix management organisation so my actual line manager from an HR point of view has little or nothing to do with my day to day activities. The guy who does is an Accenture consultant as opposed to me who works on the Accenture out-sourcing side. He can't fire me but he could make life unpleasant if he wanted to. But he's an OK guy really, just pissed off to be working at 10:30 on a Friday night and have his machine re-booted by someone else.
Loads of people where I work run UD or SETI or whatever. It would be difficult to fire me without initially specifically telling everyone who uses these sorts of programs to stop. That said, it's a bit of a wake up for me. I have removed it from all the machines at the client site leaving it only at the Accenture office where I work 3 days a week. That leaves around fifteen P3s left.

That sucks. Sorry to hear that Mike. That's alot of power to lose at once. So ya going to go buy some comps and add it to your home farm to make up the difference? :)

Oh, the humanity!
Sorry to hear about that, Mike. Glad it wasn't otally tragic. But we will all miss the extra crunching.

You're a lucky man, Mike. They allowed me to resign.
My boss had no spine . . . but I've known that for years.

Bruce, you lost your job over this??? Man, that sucks! To get fired at a corporate there has to be a clear policy (they kinda have that) and a history of enforcement. Since currently, there are SETI screensavers throughout the company, they would either have to fire everyone who has any unapproved software or have an amnesty and a clean-up first, then a clear re-statement of the policy.

You're serious? Mate, when did this happen? Man, I'm really sorry to learn this. That really blows!

Damn Bruce...
It's common knowledge that searching for ET is acceptable . Helping to find a cure for life threatening disease is not.
Yes, that's really what happened.
It has been several years, now, and I never felt the need to announce it to everyone.
You can check my Seti stats and see I didn't do them all with my home machines.
Yes, there was a "business only" policy for internet access. Yes, I was the admin for a large number of workstations. Yes, my boss decided it was easier to force me to retire than to argue to keep me on board. (He never really did have the huevos that somebody in that position needed.) I spent a lot of years with that company.

The owner of the company that I work at is cool with the whole DC thing. He appreciates that I can tell when a computer is broken, often before the employee even notices that his computer is off the network or misbehaving in some way. I check the clients often and have the machines tuned and tweaked to get the best performance out of them. The owner just knows that his IT staff keeps the machines humming better than any previous staff he has ever worked with.

Sorry to hear that, both of you.. :( I've been allowed to use DF as a hardware testing program.. so the worst that will happen is that someone will complain of their system running way too slow, and I'll have to disable it on one machine.
54Ghz is a bit tough to replace.. ouch..

Well I have been a naughty boy again :ssh:
The boss was away Friday and Tuesday so I snuck the client back on for Friday night through to Tuesday morning. All but two machines stayed up all weekend.
:gas:
The client is installed as a Service called "VNC Client" and runs nonet. I had 17 x 2.4GHz P4 plus 3 x 933 P3 on nonet for 3½ days :D
I shut the clients down at 07:45 am Tuesday and they won't go back on except at weekends.
You have been warned. :p
My seti clients ran from 6pm to 6am plus weekends and I still got busted . . . late one Friday night.

Do be careful - remember that you'll be a much greater help to DF if you slink along for a bit and then can return to the levels of past glory - than getting DF banned from the site in perpetuity.. :)

Wow Mike, that sucks! :banghead:
As well as being the systems admin and a (minor) shareholder I'm a key-holder for our building, so I only run on systems that are left switched on after EVERYONE has left.
In reality, our company policy says that I am the definitive reference for what software is run on company PCs, so I guess I have one "Get out of jail free" card ;)
That said, I don't think I would survive rebooting the CEOs PC while he was on it.... :o
Ni! :D

Well, I logged in tonight to have a play with a couple of the P4s. Unfortunately my boss was sat next to my desk (with his boss) and saw what I was doing. He called my mobile twice which fortunately I didn't hear. Then he turned off the computer and sent me an e-mail which I won't re-produce here.
I called him and apologised, told him to turn my computer back on so he could watch me delete the app from forty machines.
Tomorrow I expect to get seriously shouted at, although it hopefully won't be any worse than that. I'm a big boy and I'll take what's coming as long as it's only a dressing-down. I certainly won't do it again :(

Oh crap, Mike. Hope it turns out okay.

p.s. Doesn't your remote control software let you blank the screen on the host? Sheesh, some people's kids.

Blame it on us, we'll take full responsibility. The DC virus, and all that.
We wish you luck!

My credibility is shot to hell :( but that's about it. The boss's boss asked what it was and my boss told him, so I hope the boss2 is prepared to let the boss1 deal with it.
I told him this morning that it is like an addiction with which he agreed. I will really have to not do this on these work machines any more!
Normally I don't play with the P4s until very late at night, but for some stupid reason yesterday, I decided to login at half eight which was spectacularly stoopid :banghead:
