I was wodnering who the original author/band was for that song. My buddies and I can't quite figure it out. There seems to be two versions that seem real. One seems a bit "sloppy" and the other seems a bit like what a "real" band would do.

About the song...
This song was originally written recorded in Montreux, Switzerland in 1971 by the Mark II line up Deep Purple featuring Ritchie Blackmore (guitars), Ian Gillan (vocals), Roger Glover (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards), and Ian Paice (drums). The track is available on the album Machine Head released in 1972. This is perhaps Deep Purple's most famous song to date, the riff being one of the first things most guitarists learn when they start. The lyrics depict the circumstances surrounding the recording of this song.
We all came out to Montreux
On the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile
We didn't have much time
Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the ground
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
They burned down the gambling house
It died with an awful sound
Funky Claude was running in and out
Pulling kids out the ground
When it all was over
We had to find another place
But Swiss time was running out
It seemed that we would lose the race
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
We ended up at the Grand Hotel
It was empty cold and bare
But with the Rolling truck Stones thing just outside
Making our music there
With a few red lights and a few old beds
We make a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this
I know we'll never forget
Smoke on the water, fire in the sky
Ah, one of the first song I learnt to play on the guitar....
/memories
PS, I taught my 7 year old son how to play SOTW several months ago, hehe.

Ther are planty of cover versions of this song.
One is on a album called: the eartquake album.
It was to life aid Armenia.
Bruce Dickinson sings a verse. (not bad at all)
But it has an 80 sound and effects that does not fit the song.
It was also my first riff on a guitar, along with Johnny be goode.

The version I have is by Deep Purple, but doesn't have the third verse. it goes from the 2nd verse to the chorus and then some quality solos and the chorus again.
The other version issupposedly by Jimmi Hendrix, but I doubt it. It was also labeled as Led Zeppelin, which may be clsoer to being right. Either way, I've never heard the third verse.

Very much doubt the LZ would every have recorded a Deep Purple song. It is possible that it is a bootleg but I really doubt it.

Thank's for the songs. :) ;)
The first is Deep Purple.
No doubt about that.
But the last one is a terrible version.
I'm sure that it's not Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix or Black Sabbath.
I've never heard of Phish before, but I found a lot of theyr records.
None with Smoke..
Found also list (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=SEARCH&sql=6Smoke|on|the|Water) of bads/artists who has recorded Smoke..
It sounds like a rehersal tape.
And they do not play it the way it is original either.
But that was fun anyway.

I still wonder why my Deep Purple version doesn't have the 3rd verse, while the other versions I have do... kinda strange
EDIT: It's not the Black Sabbath one... I have that one and it sounds pretty wrong... Some bands should just not play other people's songs..........
Even more interesting, my friends can play and sing it better than the ominous 2nd version. I really wonder what I do have.....
