View Full Version : The few, the proud, the very small

I was admiring Medic's power page again and noticed that I have the least power of the 47 members listed. I don't crunch genes, I gum them. I figured my wee colleagues just hadn't had a chance to tell Medic of their little machines but the Dyrrath stats board tells another story....

There are currently 80 members who have been active in the last 2 days, a typical number. 72 of them are in the top 100. I am one of 8 active members on the 3rd page. Not a soul has sent anything in from the 4th page. It is all gray all the time.

There are many possible explanations. The puniest members could take longer than 48 hours to process a typical gene. Perhaps all of the little folk have taken the Unimatrix bus. Maybe everyone on that last page is on -nonet in order to make a colossal 100 wu dump after a month or two.

But I prefer to believe that I am the tiniest active member, the coxwain of the collective, proud as a peacock.

I am the little man and I like it like that.

Daniel

Look at it this way, if we had 1,000 members with one 200Mhz computer running each, that would be 20,000Mhz.:D

Power in numbers is what counts.

UI used to say it all the time whne I managed the Skz Genome site and I'll say it again. Everyone is equal on this team, be it if you have a 486 machine or if you have Pel's farm. Now if you could get some of the people that you are around to send me their info I would be greatly appreciative. :D Getting some of our members to send me an E-mail is like pulling teeth. :D

Thats what - in essence - the tank was created for....so small crunchers could be a part of something bigger.

Feel free to throw a few units in & get her up there!!

Much as I like the tank, it has difficulty accomplishing that goal.

It might be true if there were internal stats for the tank. If they process like Daniel does, they are part of something bigger (TGC) yet they have a better opportunity to boast about being drone 80 of 80 and still being important.

Actually I hear that Br0ck has been withholding his output from the Pirates and putting it all in the name of Unimatrix_Zero just to bring on a battle he can win. . . . ot maybe he's really thinking of jumping ship. Only time will tell.

Maybe, but you won't stay that way. According to my calculations, (with some help from the statsman), your output for the past week was 86.9, which puts you in position 77 of 93 in terms of rate of improvement -- which is what counts, over the long haul.

I second Dustin's post -

I look at what I've sunk into my farm now. Not equaling Pel's output yet, by any stretch, but it's getting up there. (if I hadn't had three machine, 5 processors, go offline while I was out of town today -grrr!) Yet I'm only doing 5-7% of the team's collective output. If you put the top ten producers together, we're not equaling 60% total of the production, on average (minus big dumps). That means that if you remove all the big farms, it's the individual with a couple machines that's carrying the weight of the team. THAT's what distributed computing is all about. If I were inclined to build a farm the size of the Collective farm, I'd never be able to keep all the machines alive without turning it into a fulltime job... It's really amazing when you think about the collasal nature of the undertaking! Seti was toooo large for me to wrap my brain around. But this I can - It's truly amazing to me the weight of each little pebble and straw...

When you run the numbers, it's clear the team can't afford to lose one gene from one person, no matter how many people bring farms online. Remarkable.

Thanks for all of the thoughtful replies. Jodie, I absolutely agree. What draws me to these DC projects most is the sense of massive power created by collective effort. We are all small, individually. As a group we are great.
