Years ago I owned a Pontiac Catalina ( read that as "land boat" ).
Anyway was at a party at the lake and someone needed to make a food & beer run...so this girl I had run into asked to borrow my car. Later found out she was trying to get away from some other guy at the party..
Well he chased her and she ran....right over a mailbox on a hairpin curve, then off a 10 ft drop off into a corn field and finally up a 45 degree bank trying to get back onto the road. Hung the car up in the middle all four wheels in the air.
Seems the guy with the mailbox had lost it 3 times before so the last time he set it on a 12 inch piece of telephone pole sunk in concrete. The Catalina mowed it off about 4 inches above the ground, not a scratch on the car. Cars are not built like that anymore!

No there are not. There is not too much that is built like it use to be. Whats wrong with this picture. Industry figured out if they don't make it to last we will buy another one. Very sad.

I agree with you siggy, it is sad. :( Everything from cars to major appliances aren't built the way they were. Appliances were built to last 20ys, now they're built to last 5yrs.
Many years ago I had a '78 Ford LTD with a 400 cleveland in it. I tried to hang a 45 at 70 MPH. I ran into the side of a parked pickup truck, pushed that into the side of a full sized van, and pushed both about another 6ft. Nothing happened to the front of my car, not even a scratch! All I had was a small crease on the side from tweaking the frame. The car ran ok for about another year, then the tranny decided not to shift past 1st.:(
Try doing that with a newer car!

Fizler, remind me not to hang out with you. A guy with the luck that you have been having could be hazardous to my health!!:D

Back in the 70s I had a '63 Buick LaSabre. Came with a 455cu inch V8! Driving over the Bay Bridge one morning in the carpool lane, a small brand new Checy pulled out in front of me doing 4mph while was doing 55mph. All I could was hit the brakes and hit em. And hit him I did. Knocked every bit of glass out of his car. Bent his frame so bad his rear wheels were 3" off the ground. Bridge crews had to cut him out of his wreck. The force of me hitting him totalled his car and the car in the next lane which I knocked him into. No one was seriously hurt! All were wearing seatbelts! The damage to my Buick was a busted chorme ring around the headlight and a slight crease in the front driver side fender.
Of course that was back when cars hauled around a ton or more in chrome trim and bumpers.

I just saw your links for the "attack of the killer mailbox" incident. Too bad, I feel for ya, sorry to see that much damage.
A story for me too...
A little over 20yrs ago I had a 75 Chevy Biscayne (Can't rmember the spelling.). It was a monstrous boat, 350ci. It survived a few incidents...
Ran off the end of a drag strip at 1 o'clock in the morning at 115mph, through 300' of bush, no damage :)
Hit the corner of a wooden house, wooden clapboards ripped off in 4' diameter, 8"x8" corner beam sheered through, only damage to car was trim around one headlight :)
Gravel road, pitch black, 80mph, 5' washout 12" deep, destroyed both right tires and rims, but no suspention damage :)
That was one tough car, but don't do this at home kids :)

I wish I could blame it on something, but it was just that "young and stupid" phase. :)

There are a few...
I owned a 1999 Hummer (civilian version of the HumV) I bought it because I was driving over Highway 17 every day (most dangerous highway in the united states) - I thought it would be "safe"
I was stopped in traffic on HW17 one morning and a Toyota MR2 rear-ended me at 70mph, or so I was told. I didn't feel a thing but heard a gawdawful screeeeeech! I'll post pictures. Total damage to the Hummer - a bent license plate. There wasn't enough left of the guy in the MR2 to spread on a pizza. [shiver] The _engine block_ was compressed. Not even the paint on the underside of the Hummer was scratched. When I'm driving my little sports cars, it does lead me to think when I'm apexing a turn at something like 4x the recommended speed....
After I wasn't driving 17 anymore, I got rid of it. Gas guzzling beast... But an amazing sense of security. There was also the time that a Jeep Cherokee spun out in the lane next to me. Ran over the top of it without even slowing down. Another scarey one... (No, I've never had an At Fault accident- it's always been someone else screwing up...)
There are a few left, they're just kinda pricey...
