We are still on dialup at the office. I have a modem in one of my hexes that shares the internet connection throughout the office with the built in Internet Connection Sharing. It's slow, but it works. We should be getting cable or DSL when we move into our new office.

We got a Linksys Wireless Router that has a built in 4 Port hub a few weeks ago and I was just attempting to get it installed last night. 4 hours later and getting horse from cussing so much I turned the bitch off. I could only get half of the networking to work properly. I think I came up with a solution on the way home though.

The Server with the modem is in my rackmount cabinet (http://www.thegenomecollective.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5392) in my office/cave with another quad and hex in the cabinet and two more workstations under my drafting table. They are all wired to an 8 Port 10/100 hub that is uplinked to a 16 port hub located on the communications board. There are 8 other machines scattered around the office all connected to the 16 port.

I put the Wireless in the office where my boss uses his laptop. The RJ-45 port on the laptop has about had it due to everyone tripping over the tether that he has now. I tried configuring the router and laptop several ways, but I couldn't get it to see both the Internet and the other machines on the peer-to-peer at the same time. The only way I could get the laptop to work with the other printers, servers and comps was to use the uplink on the 16-port and to plug it into the hub side of the router. If I tried the WAN side of the router and set it up for DHCP it would get an IP and be able to share the internet connection but the rest of the devices on the network couldn't be found. The idea I had on the way home would be to connect the WAN side of the router directly to the hub side with a short cable, don't know if it needs to be a crossover or not.

JonnyB mentioned putting the Wireless in my office and directly connecting it between the server w/ modem and the rest of the network and using the router to distribute the Internet connection. I had reservations due to the fact that my office is surrounded by brick walls and I have a tough time picking up radio stations. I really don't want to pull any cable in or out of there either.

Any ideas or experience with something like this?

The brick walls should not be a problem.
