Hey Dnar, or anyone else. I'm a self admitted Linux idiot, but I've got one machine running anyway. I've got two problems:
1. Someone was messing with my Red Hat 7.1 box and now all my desktop icons are gone. How can I get them back?
2. How the h*ll do I edit my ghclient.cfg file on my Red Hat machine?
Thanks to anyone for any suggestions.

You could use gedit or emacs also.
gedit is for gnome, while emacs works anywhere :)

Der, mine opens up emacs..... They are both easy to use
ugh, pinman, don't use vi. Its just hard. like that old MSDOS (before edit was a app) editor that was 1 line at a time

But vi is way more powerfull when you master it. your hands never have to leave the keyboard to touch that hairy rat.

Thanks Dnar. The "gmc" command did the trick, then once I could browse to the ghclient.cfg file, editing it was a snap. Kudos.

REAL unix hacks use vi... 'Nuff Said.
Agreed, I lurve my vi :D
For newbies, its easier to get them editing files with GUI text editors though.

Urgh...... vi requires too much thinking about how to do what you want to do than doing what you actually want to do :D

Actually to use vi, one requires much practice. It must be impregnated into the mind. Once mastered, vi is a wonderfull tool.
I agree, I find it a quick and dirty tool. Much better than Edlin :)

I just hate getting dependancy problems in my dreams.... Nothing worse than getting stuck in a recursive dep prob...

I NEVER do a 'make clean dep all' in my dreams... Good way to have nightmares!
