As some may have seen one of my hobbies is black powder rifles. But I also hike/backpack and coins. Just wondering what kind of stuff y'all are interested in.

As you can see there : http://www.thegenomecollective.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=9979 ,astronomy used to be my most important hobby, more than computers... With little ones in the house that wake up early, I can't go to bed too late...

I'm currently shopping for what would probably be my next hobby : http://www.borealdesign.com/

I'd noticed the Pratchett references previously Mike....I am a fan also...
Had the privilege of meeting the man a few years ago...not only extremely intelligent & funny but also a true gentleman! His books get better & better!

Oh yeah........martial arts, guitar (includes singing when drunk), coins (Australian pre-decimal) and Guinness!!

I like to modify cars and then race them at drag strips and normal race circuits. I like to start with a base car that nobody would look twice at as a speed machine. My current toy is a Vauxhall Nova that started life as a 1 Litre 8 valve with all of 50BHp. With a few mods (and an engine change) it is now a 2.0 16V beast with 185BHp and weighs as much as a packet of cigarettes. My personal best for the 1/4 mile on the drag strip is 13.6 secs @ 109MPh. This is pretty amazing for a front wheel drive car and it gives supercars a run for their money :D It can hit the rev limiter in top gear which equates to 147MPh

Here's a pic (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/phil.harling/images/car1.jpg)

I am thinking about selling this car now after 2 years. I am looking for another victim to start modifying. On my shortlist is: Audi Coupe S2, Nissan Sunny (Pulsar) GTI-R or Subaru Imprezza Turbo WRX. I am also thinking about another Nova...but this time with the Vauxhall 2.0 16V Turbo engine and six speed box as the running gear...220BHp as standard and plenty of room for mods should be a giggle :D

Kayaking Kewl. I've played around in one a few times. Mainly have done canoeing though. Got my red cross canoeing certification several years back.

According to how old the boys are, that is the time for outdoor hobbies. I followed my son thru cub scouts to Eagle. And the main reason I picked up the backpacking stuff.

I went today again, now I'm really addicted... I took the wife with me today, rented a tandem kayak and did my best to make her addicted too (make it easier to buy one after... :D)
Now I'm really thinking about having a country place next to a river :) I live 2 minutes away from a good spot but there's too much big boats around, I want a smaller river, a really quiet one...

Lemme see......amateur astronomy (have a 4.5 inch reflector), ISS sighting, reading, swimming, hiking, spending time with Teena (fiancee) and our 4 kids, driving around wildly in my 300ZX with the t-tops off.......

That's all I can think of for the time being.

Robot wars aren't true robotics, more like a serioulsy modified RC car with titanium plating and buzzsaws.

I build smaller stuff like CD sized light seekers and wall following stufff. I haven't done much other than a controlled bot using wiper motors and an RC transmitter/receiver. I'm also werkin' on BEAM bots, small solar powered bug like critters.

Okay, but you did say rc. Now just build a big maniac machine with little heat/electric seeking boarding bots to infiltrate the enemy bot.

We have a few local rivers that are pretty nice. You really ought to also check with the red cross. It may sound strange but I got a lot of leads from the instructors on rivers and places to canoe places and people for getting canoes. A few of them ran kayaks during the training so they could speed around and keep up with us. Even learned how to do a docking manuver, looks cool when it works. Locally they offer a flat water and lite white water course. They supply all the canoes and training material.

One of my favorite hobbies in the summer, is growing (and eating) extreme hot peppers.

I'm not talking about Jalapenos. I'm talking about Caribbean red Habaneros!:eek:

I was in a hot pepper eating contest way back when ( college). I lost on the third try of the "elimination round". Drinking shots of the hottest stuff I've ever had ( judge said I had a questionable breath after having chugged the 9th shot). I didn't think it was to bad that night since I walked away with 2nd place, but WHOA next morning....first time (and only time) I spent 2 hours screaming and crying on the pot...

You guys should try living with a Thai woman :) After four years together, she's finally trained me to eat the same food that she eats (real Thai food, not the watered-down kind that restaurants sell)

Red savana Habanero-->http://www.pepperfool.com/images/peppers/savina/savina1.gif

s c o v i l l e . h e a t

The Scoville heat unit is the closest thing to a standard for measuring the heat in a pepper. It is a measurement that involves adding sugar to a solution until one can no longer taste the pepper. The more sugar, the higher the spice, the greater measurement in Scoville units. Created in 1912, there are now more scientific measurements, but they generally use the Scoville units.

The following chart is an approximation of heat, used to compare the relative spiciness of peppers.

Pepper Type Heat rating (in Scoville heat units)
Habanero 200,000-300,000
Red Amazon 75,000
Pequin 75,000
Chiltecepin 70,000-75,000
Tabasco 30,00-50,000
Cayenne 35,000
Arbol 25,000
Japone 25,000
Smoked Jalepeno (Chipotle) 10,000
Serrano 7,000-25,000
Puya 5,000
Guajillo 5,000
Jalepeno 3,500-4,500
Poblano 2,500-3,000
Pasilla 2,500
TAM Mild Jalepeno-1 1,000-1,500
Anaheim 1,000-1,400
New Mexican 1,000
Ancho 1,000
Bell & Pimento 0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

0-5,000: Mild 5,000-20,000: Medium
20,000-70,000: Hot 70,000-300,000: Extremely Hot

I guess that list is fairly generalised. I've run across some seranno pepers that were much like the little pequins. Must have been a really strong strain.

I love the hot stuff, too, but I can't take the REALLLY hot stuff. I have a bottle of Dave's Insanity Sauce I keep for chili & such. I can only take one drop in a whole bowl! I read a few months ago that they found a new pepper in India that was 3X hotter than a habanero, that oughtta be one hot pepper...

When you grow peppers, you can vary the heat of the fruit. When the fruits are ripening, if you withhold water, your peppers get hotter. That list is an average for the specified pepper.

I grew some jalapenos last summer that were as hot as your average serrano.
