How can i make m laptop run coler? the builtin fan doesn't turn on often enough for me.
Maybe somethin' like GPtemp at www.benchtest.com? I can't find a gameport on my laptop though :(
500mhz celeron
64mb ram
HP Pavilion N3402
fansize looks to be 40mm, its a 5v fan wth VERY small connector on end, fan is removable, but there is no nearby 5v constant source to hookup a switch or circuit

Looks loke something that could pretty easily be adapted to USB. Might contact the author of that article about a USB version.

Me thinks USB would be hard.
USB is like a serial interface, while Game ports are analog, they figure out their directions etc by resistances.
The monitoring is side issue, I really need to get that lil fan to turn on at lower temps, or replace it with a quieter fan that it on all or most of the time. the hard part is getting a 5v fan, and then i have to find a 5v source. To make this really difficult, HP decided to not have any pinouts for any pavillions, only Omnibooks.

Maybe you could build something like
this. (http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1264680584)

Hmmm, thats looks kinda nifty, it might get some extra air into the fan port, but to me it seems like all it would do is cool the plastic and not the guts :D
We need to figure this out....
FELLOW LAPTOPERS! How do ya keep yer lappytop cool? Does yer fan turn on after you have burn marks on your pants? or after you get a scald on your lap (from wearin shorts)?
Anyone has a laptop whose fan is on all the time?

Well now you got ME thinkin'.:) I've got the HP N5250 Pavillion and the little buger does get awfully hot. I still think we could steal power from the USB port. Where is the air intake on your laptop? Mine is on the left side near the back.

Mine is center towards the top of the kkeyboard, right where the LCD "hinge" starts.
It blows up on the lcd and distorts the colours when it turns on (hot air makes LCDs go wacky)

Der......... I want a fan like that......
Can you measure approximatly how big it is? And maybe read a brand name through the vents? If ya can't see in there don't worry bout it.

can you measure the opening? About how big the fan looks? like 50mm or 40mm?
My fan and vent is held in with one screw, and then i can remove the fan from the vent with 2 screws (vent is attached to fan, vent is screwed into laptop body)

MechCD it looks like it is laying on its side. It is about 6mm high and about 70mm long. I do not see any screws close by so I would probably have to open the case to give you anymore than that.

hmmm 70mm...... a blower maybe? or 60mm? I wonder. 6mm high is about right for a fan from 40mm-60mm
Geez, my lloks like tis 4-50mm, very small, takes insanely high rpma nd noise to move any good amount of air
I can pull 5v off the usb, or mouse port
12v might come from serial port, not sure how many amps though
USB provide at least 250ma, more than a 60mm will need (average 60mm, no delttas or other high RPM things)
It might even provide 600ma, enough for just about any fan that will fit x 2 :D

It might be 60mm on the inside. But i can only measure the outside of the case since I can't open it. :(

Ok, cool.
How to put a 60mm fan in a 50mm fan housing.... No dremels allowed on this, I wnat to retain the warranty.
Taking the fan out shouldn't wreck the warranty, the manual tells you how. Either way, I could just pop it back in if it needs repaired

Sounds like a plan.
