There is 4 part time PIII700's totaled in the 10G. I guess Medic didn't want to include part time CPU's on his page. No biggie, PIII's are slow at genoming anyway.
It's hard to try and total with alot of part time CPU's. I haven't even included the part time P4 1.7 in any totals.

Hey Dave, I just squeezed 200Mhz out of 5 boxes here. As long as stability isn't an issue, they'll stay that way.
Oh, I just orderd another A7V133, and a Tbird 1.2G (1.5G shouldn't be any problem) :D I would have ordered the A7M266, but I have extra PC133.
I'm replacing the Ghz PIII at first, and when I have enough extra parts again, I'll rebuild it.

I really don't care a whole lot about "jumping the gun". Computer hardware changes way too often to be concerned about it.
Doesn't matter what you buy today, it'll be obsolete sooner than you want. I'll probably ditch the chip in 6-8mo anyway. At that time, the pickings will be better yet. That's the way I look at it.

Ok, now you've all got me wondering what I can do with the 1.33/266 Tbirds. What can they do with proper cooling? Water isn't a problem, I can set-up decent cooling for them, and ambient temp is maintained at 64degF consistantly now. They're automagically unlocked from the factory, right? I have the Asus 266 boards, the OC potential should be there for them, right? What settings should I try, all mighty OC gurus?
Someone point me the right way! I want to get an extra 33% of play room, too! [grin] Stability is a big issue for me on the downside, on the upside, everything is running Linux at this point.

1.33 should do at least 1.5 w/o breaking a sweat. Yep, 1.2G and higher are unlocked from the fab. Are you running the A7A266, A7M266, or the A7V266?
Jodie

The Procs are 1.333's.
My boards are the A7M266, memory is 266DDR, made by Samsung. If it helps, I can give you the chip part numbers.
At the moment they're cooled by these big honkin' GlobalWins that warn you all over the place not to plug them into the Mobo because they draw to much current. I always use arctic silver, and put it on with a credit card or the back of a razor knife to keep the layer thin and consistant.
If cooling becomes an issue, I have blowers out of Vax 11/780s (Two of them will work as a hovercraft when attached to an office chair. Don't ask - there were some late nights in the computer lab at Cal... An 11/780 will pop microwave popcorn if you redirect the airflow away from the cardcage. Again - don't ask...) As well as 28" box fans.
Any recommendation for the particular settings, where should I start tweaking to get there? I have four that I can turn-up right off the bat, and keep an eye on them most especially closely...
THANK YOU!

I was just reading the manual, and I can't seem to find any multiplier settings. I'm not surprised, as it's an AMD chipset. I'm not familiar with that particular board, but it doesn't seem very tweakable.
Grrr The highest bus speed supported is 133. No tweaks there either. Looks like it's only going to help OCing 100Mhz chips.
If you think I'm missing anything, have a look at the
manual (ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/socka/amd760/a7m266/a7m266-102.pdf). I hope I'm just blind.:(
wbierman
21st August 2001, 23:44
I'm only able to get about a 25% boost by OCing with my A7A266. I have not seen your board which uses the AMD 761 chip set. Mine uses the Ali Magik 1 M1647.
The A7M266 is a bit older and might not have the full range of multipliers (7.5 through 14). Start low and work your way up until your system becomes unstable. Then back off a notch and test. Run 24 hrs under load and recheck. If it can handle 24+ hours, then all is well.
The ASUS mobos will allow some tweaking but not to the extent that the Abit mobos offer.

Thanks, All!
I generally ignore manuals anyway... ;)
I can bump the FSB in 1Mhz increments. The Multiplier is grayed out, maybe there's a jumper to set for jumperless config on the multiplier, or to unlock or whatever... I'll dig around further.
So, first thing I did was set it to 145FSB and rebooted. Posted fine, booted into Linux fine, started up and ran genome fine. So I reniced it to -20 (hit that 100% processor mark!), ran for ten minutes and puked on itself. First sign was the ALU/FPU puking (Genome crashed with a SEG Fault in math, precision error.) That's always a bad sign. The machine crashed a moment later.
So I backed down to 142FSB. Posted fine, Linux came up, Genome has been running at -20 nice for a whole subloop with no problems yet. Linux reports 1427.95Mhz in dmesg. (multiplier seems off there) So I just bought an extra 100Mhz on that machine with nothing but 2mins of time, if it keep running. So if they'll all do it without modification, I bought an extra 600Mhz, or the equiv of adding another one of my Dells only with faster memory access and no additional box. Hey, I'm all for that!:D
Thanks again, Dustin and wbierman!!!
(Mech, I'll take some pictures this next weekend. And I just emailed your tracking number a moment ago - give it a few, my mailserver has been ungodly slow.)

Now I remember what was sooooo frustrating about OCing. Quality control...
Two machines, identical in every way. The memory is one serial number off from the other one. The HD came from the same batch directly from the manufacterer. The mobo is identical, the cooling is identical, the temperatures are within two tenths of a degree, the power supplies are identical and total overkill (400wt)
One overclocks 10% without a complaint. The other pukes on your shoes and won't even POST at 3%... Sigh... Best it would do is 138FSB. That's pathetic! And that at a CPU core temp of 28deg C... Can't complain about temp - I get pissy when my beer is that cold... (stupid americans can't drink beer at room temp, what's up with that?!?!?) Do you know what kind of hell I go through trying to get a Guinness that's drawn warmer than that around here?!?!
Ok, I'll stop whining now.

Jodie have you tried upping the voltage or is that at default. If you haven' ttry raising up your voltage a little. I wouldn't be concerned with heat there when you're running at 28 degrees. Also not sure what tweaks are there on the board but you may want to try up[ping your I/O voltage a litle bit to increase the stability.

Pleaes don't go with Abit, try one of the other ASUS 266 boards first. Trust me on this, you will be messing around for days if not weeks getting the boards to run rite. I'm sure you have extra PC133. Genome doesn't really get anything from DDR. I find the A7V133 ROCK stable, and very tweakable. I have all of them running at least 150FSB (300DDR). Doesn't matter. Every thread here seems to be a hardware thread. :D
I find Crucial PC133 CL2 has no problem clocking to 150 CL2. It seems to have trouble though above 155. I don't know if that is the chipset having trouble or not, but I hit the same wall with Intel or AMD.

Same findings here Dustin...I have to go to CAS3 to run above 155fsb with the Crucial. Interstingly, I get better bandwidth (only just though) at 150fsb CAS2 than I do at 160fsb running CAS3.

You should not have to up anything to make it work at default. Can your mobo support that default speed? Do you need a BIOS update to add needed CPU headroom? I have seen this on several boards.
Dustin
25th August 2001, 07:36
Thanks Wiberman, The BIOS is updated and can support up to a 1.4G chip.
I checked out the chip codes on http://www.overclockers.com// and it looks like a legit chip. Perhaps it just sliped through QC.

I hadn't even looked at the new board yet... I figured an A7V133 is an A7V133. Opened it, I noticed it says A7V133-C. So I got curious and put it together. Threw in the 1.33G. Ahem... WOW!:D 1,533 defult voltage. ASUS doesn't say what the differences in boards are. They have the exact same BIOS. Oh, the HSF I'm using is the TT VOLCANO 6Cu It's Pretty nice. (http://www.thermaltake.com/) Looking at overclockers.com, 1.6G shouldn't be a problem with some tweaking. I'll burn it in some first though.

Is it justa different revision? Or is the board slightly different?
Found it here. (http://www.asus.com/Products/Motherboard/socketa/a7v133-c/index.html) It has a revised chipset.
Chipset: VIA® KT133A and VIA® V82C686B
Not bad for an US$80 purchase.

I have two 1333 Tbirds with the same stepping as yours.... I'm going to replace the RAM with Crucial as well, but my mboard has crummy OC potential... Only thing I can set is fsb...
I know MMMV :p with all the components - that's always true with OC - you're getting something for nothing... But if I can do ANY better than my 1420, I'm game...

The A7V133's were alot more money at first. Rite when they came out, they were like $200. All I know is that ASUS wouldn't add another letter designation the board if there wasn't a difference.
I'll look into it better (RTFM) and get back to you.:)

The threads are a little mixed, so if you mean the difference between an A7V133 and A7V133-C...
The A7V133 uses the KT133A chipset with the 686a southbridge and an external Promise UDMA100 controller.
The A7V133-C uses the KT133A chipset with the 686b southbridge that has built in UDMA 100 support.
There may be more differences, but I don't know what they are.

Ok, yes mine has the promise controller that will do UDMA 100 or RAID

For a Genoming box, RAID won't do a thing (sittin in the middle of 5 A7V133's:D) I couldn't RAID out all thoe boxes anyway. Seeing that's the only purpose of that computer, I'd rather have the upgraded southbridge.

No major effort on my part...
I'll list just the relevant stuff. ASUS A7V133-C, Crucial PC133 CAS2, NSpire 300W PSU, TT V6cu HSF (see previous post), Tbird 1.33G/266FSB, Vcore 1.8v, VIO 3.7v, AS, 68f room, 5" 12v fan blowing at CPU, Cover always off, three normal case fans.
It's been at 1.6G since last night. So far, no signs of instability.
That pretty much sums it up. If you want to know more, ask away.

This is my view on water cooling...
Anything that holds water, eventually won't.:p
I've thought about it, but it's not worth the effort. Too many computers. Too much time and effort messing around. I may get another 50Mhz, woohoo. It's much easier to just build another box or three.:D
Noise isn't an issue. Heat really isn't too much of an issue. The farm is in a basement that doesn't go above 70f in the summer, and as cold as I want it in the winter. .So you see, it's not worth it for me.
About your 1.2, I'm really curious to see your results. I hope you get it up to 1.6Ghz.

Thanks for the update! I've sent my supplier off to find duplicate componentry... ;)
I'm looking forward to turning up a few of these machines. I've got an RMA from him for the mobos I already had, I'm running the same ram - it's an issue of finding the same board now is all and I'm so there! :D

The weekend's coming up! That means I might actually have time to bring up the two tbirds and the two other laptops (650 mobile steps)! So I see you your PIII and raise you a Tbird and a quarter and equiv of 1.3 PIII mobile! :p You need to cut back a bit though so I can reach double, ok?:D
But first I need to get my hair and nails done - I've been putting that off toooo long....;)

Had to downclock it to 10.5*152=1596Mhz. I had a recoverable blue screen one morning (no hard freeze). Other than that, it's been up 24x7. Crucial PC133 CAS2 has a hard time above 150Mhz bus.

Jodie are you reading this?
I just picked up another A7V133 W/a Tbird 1200.:D
Don't know what it can do. This time it was a whole whoppin $50. I'll try to make the time to get it set up, and online tonight.
Jodie

Damn it! I need more hours in my day... I still haven't had time to set the machines up that I have waiting. 2x.1.2MP, 4x1.4Tbird, 2x 650PIII Mobile.
On the plus-side, I got a kernel working with samba last night, so I should be able to get all the machines into kdfold tonight, which will shave probably an hour of running around to all the machines and checking them every day... It takes about an hour/machine to get everything going... And I bought another 24 port switch so I'll have connectivity. GRRR, the pieces are in place I just need the TIME...

Well, I'd help you set up those machines if I was in Cali... Not including the OS, it takes me 5 minutes to throw one together. Of course, the user name for Genome wold be Dustin.
Jodie
4th September 2001, 20:49
Not including the OS, that's what it takes me, too. :p And the username would automagically migrate to 'jodie' but atleast the team number would stay the same... :D
I had a nightmare computer install today - my sister has been nagging me to put her daughter's machine (Athlon 550) on the 802.11 house wireless network. I couldn't get the @#$%$@# PCMCIA card adapter to work in that machine for ANYTHING. Finally got ticked off, pitched the PCMCIA adapter in the trash and ran 300ft of Cat5e to the nearest fiber bridge, tapped off and put a good ol' trusty Intel 100/Pro in it. (Those and the Netgears have NEVER failed me)
So, hey, guess what? I've got another 550mhz crunching now! :p 550/100 w/128M and Windows 98 - not my fastest machine (in fact, my slowest) but it will pitch a gene a day or so, I'd imagine...

Cool! I've said this before. I watched my athlon classic @ 800Mhz double the genome performance of my PIII @ 1G.
Isn't the average A550 good for ~700? You should OC it! :D
Jodie
4th September 2001, 21:52
There's a thought... I might actually consider it... Downside is either using a goldfinger or cracking open my Sister's Daughter's processor... Crud for OC on the mobo - won't even let me play with the fsb. [shrug] I'll just let it sit there and crunch...
