After a long drought, i am finally back in the top 1000 users again, :) Its about damn time! I will soon be adding a 3rd system to my arsenal. Has the question of P4 vs Athlon been addressed for Genome@home yet? Obviously I wouldn't mind either... but the faster one for G@H would be ideal :D

Ben I think clock 4 clock the AMD’s still have the edge. Anyone else?

AMD for genome and most other things i better clock fer clock. or 2 clocks for 1 clock :D

p4s are just about good for nothing, they cost too much, and they only benefit from large taks like maybe 3d rendering? or editinglarge audio files

my 1ghz beats the poo out of a p4 1.2ghz

me 1.3 beats the poo out of a 1.6ghz p4 :D

Clock for clock comparisons are irrelevant though, i wouldnt be getting a 1.2GHz P4, and since a 1.8GHz P4 is faster than a 1.4 Athlon for many purposes, it is a fast system. Clock for clock the Pentium Pro is probably faster than a PIII at 200MHz. Doesnt make it better than a PIII 1GHz tho!!

:D

Ben, I would wait a little yet...the P4 will be changing socket format very soon (see here (http://www.hardocp.com/new_img_01/aug/18p4box.jpg)) and I think Intel will ramp up clock speed significantly....a P4 at 2Ghz+ will be an awesome weapon that I don't think AMD will have an immediate answer for. At the moment though, the AMD is king of the hill.

Clock for clock?

Jodie has 22 CPUs with a weekly output of 3,550 WUs.

I currently have 7 CPUs with a weekly output of 1,660 WUs.

She is kicking my butt by over 50%+. But to gain that 50%+ advantage she has 15 more CPUs. Advantage Jodie. Of my 7 CPUs, 1 is only an AMD K6-III 450! So the bulk of my production is resting on my 6 T-birds, none of which is running better than 1.2GHz.

My 1,660 per week / 7 CPUs = 237 WUs per CPU per week.

Jodie's 3,550 per week / 22 CPUs = 161 WUs per CPU per week.

On average clock for clock my CPUs are faster than hers!

Yeah, i will be waiting until this new format before i even start thinking about building the new system. Might need an athlon in the meantime for my "fix" :)

A 98aa takes a little less than 11hrs on a 1.7 P4. It's a Dell though.

Thats pretty fast!

How about cost?

Currently on Pricewatch:

AMD 1.4GHz 266 FSB $108

Intel P4 1.8GHz $463

Anyone who wants to purchase those expensive P4s...knock yourself out! I stopped paying Intel that premium long ago. I have not regretted that move.

Indeed, but lets forget about cost for the moment :)

Ben, I wish I had a P4 so I could give you some first hand advice. The only thing I know for sure, is my friend had a P4 1.4Ghz and a classic Athlon 800. He swears the Athlon 800 is faster, and uses it for his primary machine. He's very disappointed with his P4. The guy also has 2ea PIII's in his house and is an IT maintainer at our company. I do trust his opinion next to mine.

You need to hear directly from Jodie. I believe she does have a couple Tbirds now and a P4. She's a very smart cookie, and could tell you exactely the difference (If she really does have both.).

Good luck Ben!
