This Mesh Network idea is pretty smooth, anyone ever try it?

I've never seen it.

I haven't had that much time to check out the link yet either.

I just figure that it could be 1.) a lot of fun, and 2.) very usefull to people like me who live out in the sticks. (...that is when I get home... :))

I have a wireless provider about 17 miles from my house, and he can't get a strong signal out there. But, if I got one of these running and piped him into it, funding the box myself, then he in turn could pick up more customers. He "might" give me free access. That would be sweet, and I would have the box to play with. If I got some buds using them too around the area, we could pipe much more than just that wireless internet. We could build VPN's from the look of it, and LAN game from our houses "OFF" the WWW. Sounds fun to me... and it will only get better err I go home.

Good times... :baa:

I don't see anything saying what range these things have.

I've got Wireless-B running in the house, and it can probably be used by the next-door-neighbors (only). I've been more paranoid that they'd hack into my LAN (which has rather lax security once you're past the firewall) but I'd be willing to consider becoming a small-time ISP for my neighborhood if I didn't run into regulatory problems (How much power and is it on a band that the FCC permits?)

Does my ISP prohibit this, giving them the right to object if they found out?

Actually, it would be pretty easy to secure my LAN - - I've got an unused firewall which would simply add one hop to my connections.

It seems mostly a UK thing, but I did see somebody from the USA in my brief overview of the site.
