come home from working all day and I find one of my comps had stopped working. I look inside to see what the problem is since the psu is still going and see the cpu hfan has stopped. Not good The heatsink was so hot that it slightly melted the tabs to the point where as soon as I touched the heatsink it fell away. Fortunately the cpu tab was still warm enough to bend back in place but the cpu under it was nice and toasted. I'm going to wait for it to cool down and see if the mobo still works but I burnt my fingers taking out the cpu it was so hot!!. My guess is that the fan header failed and it was only a 26 cfm Y.S.Tech fan on it!!:( This sucks, ok end of moan.

Argghhh! Not good!
Two suggestions for future reference:
1. Run an overtemp shutdown app
2. Wait for hot chips/CPU's to cool before touching them. You must avoid sudden temp change and mechanical stress when hot.
Bummer man, real bummer..... I wonder if two CPU fans in series is a good idea after all.....

lol. Well i thought MBM was running so I wasn't that worried. Have to admit that it is the first (and hopefully the last) time that it happens. I have a duron sitting around not doing anything that I'm going to pop in there as soon as I find an extra 3 to 4 pin connector that I know that I have kicking around somewhere. As for the burn on the fingers it'll heal. Heck I should have known but then again I've done stupider things before.

I feel for you mate. wylie had a similar experience with his Tbird....
Maybe we should setup a R.I.P. sticky thread in the hardware forum, somewere we can all greive and remember CPU's lost in battle.....

Screw the 3-pin headers, Stall, invest in a Digital Doc 5. I laid out for one a few months back for my newly rebuilt gamer and love it!!!

Thanks for the tip Ferret. I'll probably do that once I finish playing around with my dually a bit more and get my gaming rig back up to snuff. I keep seeing them for sale but somehow my money is already gone on some other great deal on a piece of hardware by the time I even think about it.

Those things are great, fan control, rpm monitoring, alarms, and temp displays.
I'm not sure if they can shut don the puter if somethin dies, but if the fan stops, its not cuz the Digital Docs hheader isn't werking :D

Oh man sympathies.....
I had a Tbird1.2 die on me due to fan failure....its a gutwrenching thing to just look at a blank monitor and KNOW whats happened.
New bios for the A7V133 supports hot cpu shutdown which has given me some peace of mind, but I still get nervous when I hear any noise (or lack of) from the computer room...

My comp (PIII 600 @ 840) went for about 12 hours of solid gaming without any CPU fans when I was at a network game; I forgot to plug them in :)
Luckily the HS is big enought to cope and there are enough case fans in it to keep it going.
